The present condition of Puppy Linux in Japan

#2 Post by balloon »

Thank you for doing shinobar important role.
By his reader and many supporters,
I was very glad to be able to release a new version of Puppy Linux Japanese Edition.

The Japanese was in a condition to support Ubuntu.
Therefore a reaction is good for Ubuntu base and Precise Puppy doing.

And I realize that the popularity of Puppy Linux rises in Japan.
Please be pleased with Puppy Linux spreading by everybody watching this to Japan.

The puppy runs well today. Bowwow!

Precise-571JP, Japanese edition. Excellent work ! It's 'snappy' even on a Compaq 700 MHz machine with 384 Megs RAM and a 500 Mb swap partition. Once the standard Japanese menu is changed for en-GB - a few minutes fun! - it all becomes very smooth sailing. Thanks too for the Opera browser. Recommended. I'm surprised there haven't been more postings!

SCIM Input Method Setup guide for Precise 571JP

#7 Post by rayberau »

On my older Acer computer, which does not have a working CD/DVD drive (and BIOS only has option for floppy disk, and hard-drive), I downloaded Quickset Wary Puppy Linux 511 and installed SCIM-Anthy and JIS fonts. My Japanese flatmate can type on the Acer Computer by toggling Ctrl+Spacebar between English and Japanese, and there is a keyboard icon near the date/time readout at the bottom-right corner of the desktop.

With Precise 571JP on my LG computer the SCIM is different and I haven't yet worked out how to toggle between Japanese and English. I am in Brisbane, Australia but at Menu> Setup> Mouse/keyboard Wizard I have the country layout as "us" otherwise if I change it to "jp106" the special keys are very hard for me to find.

I cannot understand how to use the SCIM Input Method Setup in Menu> Desktop. I opened Desktop> SCIM Input Method Setup and tried with SCIM-bridge disabled and highlighted Anthy but that did not bring up any keyboard icon. I don't know what a 'scim-bridge' is nor do I understand the GUI choice.

Do you have a guide on how to use the SCIM Input Method for Precise 571JP? Either English or Japanese will do as my flatmate is Japanese.

Thank you for your help. The Precise 571JP? looks very good and I look forward to using it with English and Japanese input.

Regards from Ray Bergmann and Kazu Yamauchi in Brisbane, Australia.

PS: My computer is Intel(r) Celeron(R) CPU 2.8Hz, Memory 1942MB (168MB used). I am using Precise Puppy - 5.7.1

It maybe a bug :(

Edit the file /etc/gtk-2.0. If you find 3 lines like this, maybe at the last part of the file:

Code: Select all

"/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-scim.so"
"/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-scim.so"
"scim" "SCIM Input Method" "scim" "/usr/share/locale" "ja:ko:zh:en:en"
Remove the'/usr/lib/gtk-2.0' line and leave next 2 lines:

Code: Select all

"/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-scim.so"
"scim" "SCIM Input Method" "scim" "/usr/share/locale" "ja:ko:zh:en:en"
Save the file and restart X.

Deleted middle line of gtk-2.0 but still no keyboard icon

#9 Post by rayberau »

Earlier today I was unable to get Precise571JP to boot from DVD so I threw that DVD away and burned the Precise571JP iso image onto another DVD which did boot up.

I then followed your advice and deleted that middle line leaving
"/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-scim.so"
"scim" "SCIM Input Method" "scim" "/usr/share/locale" "ja:ko:zh:en:en"

But I still don't see any keyboard icon on the desktop bottom bar to toggle from Japanese to English.

Using my LG computer that has only Linux Mint 15 and no Windows OS on the hard drive, but I was able to install Puppy from DVD drive ...

As I did previously with Precise571JP I did likewise with LucidPup528JP. That is, I threw away the DVD I was having trouble with and burned the Lupu-528JP iso onto a new DVD. Then everything went fine until I reached the same point I reached with Precise571JP. That is with both Precise571JP. and Lupu-528JP I can type using SCIM-Anthy on Abiword or Geany Text Editor and can cut-and-paste onto the internet, but I cannot type directly onto gmail or any other internet page in Japanese. When I press Ctrl~Spacebar the browser goes back to file:///usr/share/doc/home.htm

But SCIM-Anthy works well on my old Acer computer that has Windows XP on the hard drive but does not have any working DVD drive nor USB drive listed in the BIOS boot list. On that computer I was able to install Wary 511JP using your Quickset Windows installer and the Puppy Package Manager listed JIS fonts and Multi-Language Pack in the pet/sfs list of downloads available for Wary 511JP, and installed them automatically.

Unlike the Acer computer my LG computer does not have Windows but I thought I would try to repeat the earlier success with Wary511JP by burning the iso to DVD. I am now writing this from the Wary511JP on my LG computer and have the following problems..

1. Even though in Menu> Setup> Mouse/keyboard Wizard> choose layout for your country the selection is *us* and Keyboard Interface is intl us, the special keys are not correct - instead of colon I have +, and I cannot find the *at* sign one uses in email addresses, and I cannot find the under-dash that is used in http+//shino=pos=to.

2. Unlike in the Quickset Windows installer version in the Wary 511 version I am writing from here, in the Puppy Package Manager there was no JIS fonts and Multi-Language Pack so I had to download lang=pack=ja-1.1-w5.sfs from your website and I have placed it in *home*. Now I need to work out how to install it. What are the details I need to type in the terminal emulator to install the sfs?

The old Acer computer is on its last legs. Kazu tried using Wary 511 Japanese Edition on it but the mouse keeps freezing and the computer has to be restarted which is frustrating when trying to type on the internet, and the mouse also freezes with Windows XP on the old Acer computer. Windows XP has become so slow on the Acer computer that it is barely usable.

That:s - oh, there is the colon, its where the apostrophe should be! Now I know where to find it :)
That:s why I decided to try to get a puppy linux with SCIM-Anthy working properly onto the LG computer.

I:m not 100% sure that its the Quickset version of Wary 511 or not. In Menu> System> Hardinfo Hardware Infomation it has:

Operating System
Kernel Linux 2.6.32.28 (i686); GNU C Library Version 2.10.1 (stable); Distribution Puppy Linux 0.51; Desktop Environment Unknown (Window Manager: JWM); Langauges en=US English locale for USA.

Processor Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 2.80GHz; Family,model 15.4.9 (Partition 4); Cache Size 256KB, Frequency 2800.17MHz; BogoMIPS 5600.34; Byte Order Little Endian; Has FPU (yes); Cache Level 1 (Data) 8 way set-associative, 32 sets, 16KB size; Cache Level 2 (Unified) 4 way set-associative, 512 sets, 256KB size.

I fixed the keyboard! In Menu> Setup> Mouse/Keyboard I clicked on Advanced X-org keyboard configuration, clicked OK, then XKB Configuration Manager came up and I highlighted Keyboard Model and it was on pc101 Generic 101-key and I changed it to Microsoft Natural (even though I have Microsoft Basic Keyboard 1.0A which wasn´t listed). Now I can type @(_:´ a; all correctly. The strange thing is though, when I go back into XKB Configuration Manager> Keyboard Model, and pc101 Generic 101-key is highlighted (and not Microsoft Natural, but now the keyboard is working correctly! (Even though when I opened XKB Configuration Manager> Keyboard Model the first time it looks exactly the same as it does now. Anyway something did reset and now the keyboard is correct. :)
