Helps a lot if you post only one question at a time.

For good results this info is needed.

Still using an earlier test version (5.6.5.6) on multi-session DVD and it's still working fine. When this DVD gets full I'll probably move up to 5.7......

I gotta admit that this is puzzling. I have never seen error messages like the ones you have posted.

Let me suggest the following:

1. Try booting with pfix=ram. Probably, the easiest way to do this is to copy your existing entry in menu.lst with pfix=ram instead of pfix=fsck. This will boot without the save file and eliminate that source of problems. See if this works.

2. Bizarre problems are often caused by defective downloads. Did you check the md5sum of slacko-5.7-NO-pae.iso? You can find the information here: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/di ... lacko-5.7/. If the md5sum does not check, reload the iso and start over. (You can check this by opening a terminal in the directory where you have downloaded the iso and
typing: md5sum slacko-5.7-NO-pae.iso.
tried to follow every suggestion but none worked.

As soon as I make a savefile then it stall at the automatic log in.
Could it be some hardware issue?None elese have trouble with the OS only here at my computer. I am lazy but I have another coputer to install it on or USB to see if that helps :) Not now though lack motivation
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

OpenShot (video edit), xvidcap (screen capture), Audacity (audio edit) and Blender (3D animation) all combined into a single SFS and each/all running well under Slacko 5.7 http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=92616

I've remastered as per that thread to move Firefox out of the distro and into a portable (outside of savefile space). [Together with a number of other tweaks]. The SFS of those four multi-media apps is nearly as large as the remastered slacko 5.7 ISO (127MB vs 138MB).

Could anyone confirm if nvidia_latest-334.21-3.10.32-i686.pet is the latest nvidia driver I could get for slacko 5.7? I have GT 540M.

And where could I get the latest chrome/chromium browser? chrome 30 can't be downloaded from PPM...

According to the nvidia.com website the recommended driver for the GT 540M is the 304.xx so if you are going to use PPM I suggest you install the nvidia_legacy-304.119-3.10.32-i686.pet (if you are using the PAE version of Slacko 5.7).

Various versions of Chromium and Google Chrome are available on the forum. With Slacko you will possibly need to install one or two extra libs. See here:-
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=86501
or for Slacko this may be even better:-

Hi Everyone who uses multi-session DVD to run and maintain PUPPY in RAM.
James C wrote:Still using an earlier test version (5.6.5.6) on multi-session DVD and it's still working fine. When this DVD gets full I'll probably move up to 5.7......
This is a reasonably significant statement, to me, because it hints at how does one who maintains a DVD-centric system migrate it to a newer version within the same distro. Thanks @James C as this gets us to wonder "How to accomplish this kind of migration?".

Many have already seen what happens when a newer booting version of a PUP finds an older PUPSAVE version of itself on a HDD/USB; namely, it requests permission to migrate that PUPSAVE from the older version to be compatible with the booting version. But, until his posts, it never had occurred how to do this when the system is a DVD-centric one.

Those unfamiliar with DVD-centric use; there is a save-session created at each PUP shutdown. Thus, there is no single save-session equivalent for a PUPSAVE disk-image that exist on frugal installations. Thusly, the procedure that PUPPY uses to migrate a USB/HDD has to be different for DVD-centric systems versus frugal ones.

Suggestions, anyone.

Jasper

Boot from your current multi-session-CD/DVD, then eject it.
Insert a used (if the data is not needed) or pristine DVD or a pristine CD.
Burn your iso update (as multi-session if a CD) say, with Burniso2CD
Save on exit and reboot.
----------------------------
I always save my desktop icons first.
----------------------------
There is nothing to lose - and the worst result is a new CD coaster.

Greetings all, and thanks to all those who participated in making Slacko 5.7 such a wonderful OS. I have been absent from puppy land for about two years now, but am happy to see that things have been progressing nicely.

I have spent much of the last week reacquainting with puppy and think I have made some significant progress but do have some questions. I will start simple... I hope :-)

In the mirrors there are two versions of the devx. Slacko_5.7 and 5.7.0, what is the difference? Which is preferred and why?

Thanks--Its good to be back. :D

The 5.7 devx goes with the NON-PAE Slacko
The 5.7.0 devx goes with the PAE Slacko

Hope that helps.

HI @GortonC.

To add to what is shared by @OscarTalks, I offer this.

PAE refers to a capability built-into a PC's CPU. If you have any Linux booted, then open a terminal and type the following command

Code: Select all

# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep --color=always pae
If you see nothing (no output) from the command, your PC CANNOT USE the PAE ISO or its accompanying DEVX of version 5.7

Otherwise, you will see a line indicating you do, like the following:
  • flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe nx bts est tm2
As such, seeing the above line, you can use either ISO. Both ISOs include exactly the same applications, same desktop look and same operations. So, because your PC has the capability, you can download and run version 5.7.0's ISO and its DEVX. You will a great experience, as well.

Enjoy Slacko57

Am I correct in the belief that PAE allows for addressing/using more than 4GB of RAM and pretty much nothing else (all more or less exactly the same otherwise)?

As puppy loads itself into memory and generally is relatively small, isn't PAE somewhat mute?

I'm thinking alone the lines of a massive 1GB puppy distro still having 3GB of available memory in a 4GB non-PAE system, together with perhaps another 4GB of swap (disk file space) to utilise (assuming such had been partitioned/created).

When might the benefit of PAE actually be seen when using Puppy? The PC I'm using has 1.5GB RAM and 2GB swap and I don't think swap has ever actually been utilised.

I'm aware that its a forward looking thing - more RAM, more bits (64 instead of 32) etc. in readiness for even larger future programs, but perhaps not a concern for most general users at the present time. As such a non-PAE Slacko 5,7 version boot DVD/device has the greater potential of booting/running a wider range of PC's (older and more modern (PAE and non-PAE)) i.e. is more portable..

Thank you gentlemen. I had both sfs files and now deleted 5.7 as I do have PAE.

ruwoof, I believe the advantage of PAE will show up with programs running large data sets, not large programs themselves. An example would be Bitcoin-qt.

Which brings me to my next question. I am thrilled that I have been able to get SpiderOak, Anki, and BitMessage up and running. :) I have not had success yet with Bitcoin-qt 0.8.6.

I have loaded devx_slacko_5.7.0, qt-everywhere-opensource-src-4.8.2-i686-s14, and qt4_DEV-4.8.0.sfs. (Are any of these redundant?)

I just noticed that Bitcoin-qt 0.9 is out, just in the last few hours. I have not tried compiling it yet, but suspect I will have the same problem. I get the following error: fatal error: QApplication: No such file or directory

I have searched for "QApplication" to no avail. Any ideas?

BTW-I should note that my understanding of linux is VERY limited, but I am good enough at searching for, and following directions that I may seem further along than I am.

Again, thank you for any help.

For a darker taskbar theme, how can you lighten up the speaker, network and CPU icons?

I've manually increased the cpu background colour in .jwmrc-tray which helped some. I can't see anything to configure frisbee's (network icon) tray icon. And the volume configuration doesn't seem to make any difference no matter what colours I set.

TIA

Yes

With PAE.
physical address size increases from 32 bits to 36 bits. This increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB.

Basically, with Puppy, you would be hard pressed to use 1GB of memory in normal use.

To change the color of Rertovol icon, use:

Code: Select all

# retrovol_speaker
Takes 1 color argument
eg:	red, blue, green (in English)
	or hex (escaped #):	\#ff0000,\#0000ff,\#00ff00
If input is garbage then output is garbage!

Thanks BigPup

At 9 mplayer video's, one youtube my PC still played back with no slicing. Above that and things started to get choppy - primarily due to CPU. At which time memory utilisation was around 775MB out of the 1.5GB available memory (let alone 2GB of swap).

Yes there may be some cases of a viable need for 4GB+ as Gortonc mentioned earlier, but otherwise more likely it will be CPU thrashing rather than exhausting available memory IMO.
