we should still use published hash tags to confirm a good download and to keep the pets pure... While we have not seen this problem or will not be able tell if a pet has been repackaged with stuff removed or ADDED.....
Since the hash is inside it can be changed to match whatever changed. A pet with same exact name and nearly same size could be a Trojan.... with a published hash from orginal package it would be harder for someone to fake a spy pet.

Could someone please walk me through the steps involved in adding the ati radeon driver to quirky 6.0.5 and permanently booting with it? Thanks in advance.

General assistance please

#664 Post by Rodney Byne »

I wondered if it might be possible to tailor Quirky 6.1.4
for a particular requirement.

My Acer Aspire One netbook model AOA 110 ZG5
with 8Gb SSD and half gig of ram, has on its right-hand
side an extra SD card slot for stored pictures etc.

Quirky works well on the flashdrive on this pc, but on
plugging in the SD card, its presence is not recognised.

The old installed Mint 8 OS needed this added enforcement
line edited in grub2 boot to make it work:
pciehp.pciehp_force=1

Could this line or something similar be added to Quirky
and if so where would it need to be inserted/saved to
achieve the same working condition please.

Thanks in advance for advice.

My Acer AO-D255E will not boot SD card (not an option in BIOS settings).and I don't know of a work around to boot SD. I also use memory stick for QT6.0.5 no problems.
However I can mount and open other SD with other distros. Will Quirky Tahr (f2fs filesystem) work or do SD need fat32 ?
My work around for my other SD distros was to get a USB adapter/"Reader" that SD (or microSD) can plug in and boot that way'

Hotplugging an SD card

After experimenting, I found that by booting Quirky with the SD
card already plugged in the r-h Acer slot, its drive icon ident
appeared in the bottom left of screen and corresponding
ident directory was auto-stored in file /mnt

This compromise way of revealing the r-h slot SD card contents
is the nearest I can get to hotplug auto-mounting.
It certainly wouldn't be to Barry K's standard of doing things,
but better than nothing without any coding knowledge.
Hopefully should also work with Quirky Tahr
and work for you too.

Will also save me the cost of buying a USB adapter/Reader.
Regards.

Pre-formatting an SD card to boot a pc etc.

An SD card is pre-formatted in the same way as for a flashdrive
in fat32, before running the Quirky Tahr install script.
Per Barry K's advice, run the latest install script using
Puppy Precise 5.7.1, as this has the f2fs tool kit features in it.

In regard to booting a pc from an SD card, as far as I am aware
very few computers have the advanced BIOS bootup features for
this purpose, although technology is moving very fast these days.
I suspect even pc technicians are hesitant to risk flashing
older pc BIOS with the latest software - just in case of rupturing
the BIOS chip firmware.

Keep checking Google for the latest developments.
Regards.

Plop does a good job in allowing operating systems to be installed
on USB drives even if your computer doesn't support booting
by USB. I've installed Plop from my CD drive port however
your computer doesn't have a CD drive.

However there are ways of installing plop by drag and drop of
a few files. The instructions are at the plop site.

I wrote about my experiences of burning a plop cd....

Hi don570,

This is the answer when confronted with (Typically) a net-book which will not boot from the SD card slot but will boot from a USB port. I have had this model for some time and it has been totally reliable:

qt6.0.5

#672 Post by bobtron »

Tnx Don570
You are right!..even though my Acer notebook will not support SD boot in BIOS..I do have external USB CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burner that I use to burn live distro .iso's etc..
I have tried PLOP before but didn't get very far..I probably did something wrong or had other technical issues.
I will check it out again..and Tnx for the "heads up"!
P.S.- So far so good..running Quirky 6.1.4 from partition sda6 right now to post this..and QT6.0.5 from USB 8GB memory stick..Neither have failed my tests so far.{also drafted my colleague from work to test also..no troubles found}.
Good job & tnx for all your help guys !

You are right!..I also use USB/"Reader" SD/microSD Adapter to boot my other distros' {linux mint, ubuntu, knoppix, pclinux, point, porteus, puppy slacko 5.5xl} never any problems.
Handy little item to keep in the toolbox..either when I am at my office {at home} or in the shop about 1 mile away {and a spare to carry around}
Tnx guys!

Quirky

#674 Post by bobtron »

Sorry fellas if I am off Quirky topic, but are there any ham radio guys here? maybe we can start a new thread/discussion? {I would like to move the discussion/thread group away from this because it will be for special interests}
I grabbed QT packages from repos and SDR CW/RTTY/PSK stuff works also on my ICOM 706MKIIG
just thinkin'
-formerly WB9BJX {ham radio call sign}
{shortwave listeners comments invited too} but we gotta go somewhere else to discuss and NOT drag down this forum/thread.

Start a new thread/discussion

#675 Post by Rodney Byne »

To bobtron:

I suggest starting a Ham Radio new thread for discussion
in the section:
Engineering/Science/Simulation

Go for it.

Great suggestion. Thanks for the "head's-up" where I can get the ball rolling for my Ham Radio friends {they use various Linux distros & really like Quirky and other pups}.to try out ideas.
Just thought that another space would be good place to take it for a walk.
-Cheers & TNX !

If you want to install Quirky Tahr 6.0.5 on a computer that will not usb boot (before Barry releases a live cd):

+ put all the Quirky Tahr 6.0.5 files on external storage, flash or hd

+ make a live cd of Puppy Precise 5.7.1

+ boot from the Puppy Precise 5.7.1 cd

+ run the Quirky Tahr installer from the external storage
