Muppylinux-001b-211 and 003-211 for testing

NEW version 004: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?p=76935#76935

Muppy is based on Puppy, but targets a different audience.
While Puppy is optimized for speed and size (for very old computers), Muppy prefers some not so old computers.
But already a Pentium 400 should be ok.
On my Pentium 700 it is quite fast.
Muppy uses the "Icewm-ultra" as desktop together with the taskbar from xfce (it can group windows).
Instead of the webbrowser seamonkey it uses Firefox 2, and Sylpheed 2.3 beta for Email.
German and english spellcheckers are included.
It has many codecs to be able to play all those typical videos found in the web.
It includes Java 1.5.0.08.
It includes (and uses automatically) hardware-accelleration for your graficscard (DRI).
This accelleration includes only free drivers, but not the commercial ones from Ati or Nvidia.
But you can install those from Ati with
/usr/local/3DCC/3DCC (forgot to add a menu-entry).
It is prepared to run OpenOffice 2.04, you only must download 1 file in addition.
On Muppys desktop you'll find 2 packagemanagers:
PSI to install software made for Puppy, and Gslapt to install software made for Slackware 11.
Some small tools are added.
You can choose among several decorations, themes and cursors.
Rip CDs with the brand-new CDripper from plinej.
Use the XFileExplorer to manage your files.
Create screenshots with shutterbug.
An Autostart-Roxapp to drag files on, that shall be started together with X.
Some traybuttons for different purposes.
screenshots
some tools to decorate your system.
Note that instead of xmessage gxmessage is used.
Also Xdialog uses Gtk2 now.

I plan to use Muppy as a german system, so some applications already support german:
Abiword

Xfe
Gslapt
Geany
Sylpheed
To activate german, run in the Puppymenu:
- Control panel
- chooselocale country settings

http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Muppylinux/Mu ... cepack.pup
This bugfix should fix the read-only problem when installing to the harddrive.

However, I do NOT recommend a full harddrive-installation.
read this post for details why, and how to make it better:

Thank you
I'm also quite happy with the look.
The feel will be enhanced by some more tools/docs soon.
All the "big" stuff is included now (except wine, cups and KDE).
I think I should add wine, but not KDE.
KDE will need a simple wizard based on mkKDE, as the needs of each user are too different for that big environment.
So a solution to customize it will be best, where you select if you want only 60 or 300 MB in addition.
Glad you like it

Sounds like fun - am downloading now . . .
Have added to the wiki news
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LatestNews
. . . maybe Cups can be an icon click away? (something rhino is adding for some PuppyPro features)
I am glad to see Firefox 2 in there - using it now.
Congratulations, will let you know how I get on.

It is interesting. All those ultra themes to try out
and it seems similar to an earlier MU special?
I am back in standard Puppy because I know
I could get lost in tweakery . . .
Also I find those fishes swimming by
too distracting . . .
Interestingly there are simple scripts to alter the menu
- a lot to explore.
Do have fun and report back to Mark
be very interested how others get on
Seems stable and usable already
At the moment I am using the familiar Puppy 2.11
on which this is based.

daring
Ahh, for the daring - not bound by the 128 MB and sub-400 Mhz limitations. A DarePup (I wonder about the German translation of this?).
Thanks, Mark.
Thanks, Mark.
Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? Get the sfs (English only).
i tried
its AMAZING
fast like swift!
the only thing i don't like are the redundant menu (example, office is in apps/office and in office itself) and too many themes!
is amazingly fast!
and looks very good!
btw can i use desktop here to save some important doc or is like puppy that can't be used for that?
Thanks

Pakt:
You already can install Cups from PSI.
PSI offers all dotpups on dotpups.de and some other servers
I think of adding an icon to the desktop for it.
Lobster:
you can deactivate the fish.
Click on the second icon right of the startmenu - "edit startup"
Here you can comment the modules loaded by Icedock.
change these lines:
to
Nevermore:
yes, will be updated.
It is basically how I update everyPuppy personally for me, so expect adaptions to Puppy 2.12 and so on

Could you explain more detailed what you would like to do?btw can i use desktop here to save some important doc or is like puppy that can't be used for that?
Mark
well actually what i was looking is this:Could you explain more detailed what you would like to do?
remove all the icons from the desktop and put in a folder in my-roxapps
use the desktop as a storage for important files:
example, i need to put a doc in front of my eyes so i won't forget.
i place it on desktop, only it..
and for sure i will see every time i use puppy..
that's what i mean
i download something for further use, i save directly on desktop and it shows there, so that i don't forget and download again
btw do u know if puppy has perl inside or if there is a dotpup for it?
i need to run a couple scripts..
last question, could you please post a package list? did u check how much memory the windows manager eats?

GuestToo has posted a tool to use more than 1 pinboard (=desktop) for Rox.
wait...
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=11114
Does this do what you need?
If yes, I might try to integrate it in Muppy.
Perl is included.
If a script will not run, it might require an additional module.
In that case run it, and post the errors here.
SDL is included, too.
Except seamonkey I removed nothing for best compatibility.
You even still can use JWM.
As I plan to add much more tools, a full list will be available then.
The memory-requirements should be low (icewm), but depending on the themes you use, it will increase.
Big backgrounds, opulent Gtk-themes might slow down old hardware.
The biggest problem might be all the huge xorg acceleration-modules (DRI), that make up a large portion of the Iso-size.
As the Iso is loaded to Ram, this is no efficient approach.
But Muppy uses simplicity instead of efficiency in this issue (different to Puppy).
This is why I recommended not so old hardware, though the programs themselves have low requirements.
With Puppy 2.12, Barry introduces a more efficient trick to handle this issue, what I will try use then.

Hi everyone, forum n00b here....
I like the description already, MU....so I'm gonna have to dl it and give it a go..
I like the Slack pkg installer, mainly 'cause I'm very familiar with Slackware......It' been my main distro for several years, now.......Have tried others in the past, but always returned to Slack.......
But, so far, I like Puppy and how he handles ......and am writing this post in the 211 Seamonkey livecd at this moment.......
I also like the installer for Slackware pkgs, too (have quite a few custom ones I'd like to try out).......As for your concern about not installing KDE 'cause of too many choices to make everyone happy, why not just do a basic install, which would be qt, arts, kdelibs and kdebase.........These have to be installed anyways to satisfy dependencies for the rest of the KDE pkgs, and then let the user decide what others [s]he wants to install......
Anyway, I'm off to dl your Muppy iso and give it a test drive...... ....but I should be back shortly and give you my impression (that is, if you're willing to listen to me babble on... )
See ya soon

Tried Muppy on
1: 500MHz Celeron with 256MB RAM;
2: 550MHz Celeron with 192MB RAM. Am posting from the latter.
Machine 1. did not use swap when doing just basic stuff, including running Firefox.
Machine 2. did use swap (128MB use shows in free), but the swap was not very active as shown on the panel.
In both cases, Firefox opens in about 5 seconds, which is really good.
Very impressive, am looking forward to using this as a default, may finally abandon the much-loved Simple Puppy from way back when Puppy was a pup.

Fine it works on your celerons
I was planning to create Muppy in early 2007 for the sportsclub where I have a job.
We use Windows XP there, but the secretary uses only some basic applications like MS-Office and firefox.
So the idea is to try, how she will be able to do her work with a german Puppy.
As she will not use the Puppy-scripts to setup things, those may remain in english.
As my boss is out of town, he offered me some free days, so I already started now.
Important is to have all basic stuff in the Iso, so that my boss does not need to fiddle with packagemanagers just to change a printer or a graficscard.
For this reason I included the DRI-modules instead of using the 3DControlCenter.
But in those cases, when he asks me to add an additional program, it is good to have PSI and gslapt available.
I will add a third one listing only a few programs explicitly tested and recommended for Muppy (see here: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10675 ).
Apart from this purpose, I plan to use Muppy as my standard-Puppy, so further upgrades are independent from the sportsclub purpose.
Just tried OpenOffice, on my P700 it starts in 15 seconds (first run), a second run needs only 5 seconds (but I have 1 Gigabyte Ram, and more than the half of it is used according to the memory-wm-app).
Firefox2 now is so fast and goodlooking, that I use it instead of konqueror, that I prefered recently to those mozilla-based browsers.

Hello again,
I've got Muppy running now and it is excellent...............I've never used icewm before but, for a lightweight wm, I'm impressed........
Everything seems to work so far, except for one little detail...........The start menu is incomplete. By that, I mean it only shows "refresh Menu', 'Windows >', 'Themes >', and 'Logout >'.............However, if I hit 'refresh Menu', then it shows the full menu from 'Applications' on down.......Other than that, it's running just fine as far as I can tell....
Good job, MU
BTW, that Xfe file manager is a great addition, too........I like it a lot!
