Congratulations Mick!

Tried it on a Dell i7/4GB intel graphics laptop.
Everything (that I tested) worked OOB.
Pretty solid :D

Slacko64 - 64 bit Puppy - 15 Jan 2014

#4 Post by Billtoo »

I did a manual frugal install to my Acer Revo nettop.
The proprietary nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run) compiled
and updated xorg.conf.
Now I have the correct screen resolution etc, and the mouse works but
the keyboard doesn't.

Connecting to any website in Firefox is very slow.
That's it so far.

Hello 01micko

Thanks for this, its working well on my PC. Athlon II X2 240 +RS880G

I run puppies from a FAT32 partition. Each time I run Slacko64 it leaves the partition in a state that win2k complains about. Win2k runs the disk check and finds no problem.

I installed your VLC 2.1.0 PET and then I installed alienBOB's VLC 2.1.2 TXZ over the top.

I now have VLC 2.1.2 working nicely.

The TXZ does not seem to install properly on its own. It gets stuck with BASH taking 100% of one core until I shut down.
I does copy the files to the right place, though.

TurionPowerControl + CPUID & MSR are working and I have turned the P-State voltages down to sensible values.

The idle cpu load is about 4% whereas fatdog is less than 1%. Nothing shows up in TOP, but something is using cpu cycles in the background.
It's not important for my desktop but may be significant on a laptop.

On the subject of download speeds to the UK...

I downloaded 5.8.6 from 01micko at about 30kB/s the other day

Today I downloaded 5.8.7 from smokey01 at 109kB/s

At the same time I downloaded the QT SFS from nluug at 352kB/s

That's about the limit for my ADSL.

Thanks again

Quick frugal install using the Universal Installer. Had to add nouveau.noaccel=1 due to freezing problems.Otherwise, all looking good so far.

PPM is working for james and firefox is blazing for you, I'm not
getting the same result as you on this nettop or my i7 desktop.
Should I report my results or just be quiet?

Apologies if I offended you in anyway.
I just though that would be important for the developer to know the extend of the problem, ie if it is hardware/setup specific or something more general.
I hope you find this practice agreeable.

Same here. I installed one package while running live....... different pupmode/ hardware/ devx installed or not/ etc could make a difference. All of the different variables is one reason why testing is important.

Billtoo, I gather the md5sum was ok. Strange that you have the same result on 2 machines. I don't know what else it could be other than an error copying the files to disk. To eliminate that possibility, or at least reduce it its chances of occurring, run "sync" after copying files.

For your convenience, here are the checksums of the original files (in case it is a copy error):

Code: Select all

934675aa99ba614a17fbc18fd4db0cf3 initrd.gz
0cc42069f87993144e5f3d8e626bbe95 puppy_slacko64_5.8.7.sfs
a82bb260d62d789ab06506e246b2a53d vmlinuz
Also, you might try copying from commandline, sometimes filemanagers can change permissions.

Of course it could be none of the above and be a serious bug! That's why it's alpha, to get the crap out in the open.

USB installers will be broken. (syslinux issue)

#15 Post by rwishlaw »

Although it is under Issues on the Nabble Slacko64 page, I thought I would mention here that the BootFlash Install Puppy to USB does not work. It hangs when it is trying to copy the iso to the USB stick

The md5sums match on my nettop.
I burned the iso to a dvd and did a frugal install to my i7 desktop
with the universal installer.

PPM is working, I installed kdegames.
Firefox is still awful, takes a long time to connect to any website.

I just now updated the PPM and that broke it, must have done that
first thing on my nettop install.

I'm going to try installing the proprietary Nvidia driver now and see
how that goes.

EDIT:
I installed the proprietary driver and had it update xconf, did xwin and got back to the desktop at proper resolution and the driver had installed.
The mouse was working but the keyboard wasn't, exited to the prompt and tried xorgwizard, now nothing is working, can't get back to the desktop at all.

Thanks Billtoo!

While I may not be much help with your nvidia troubles I can help with the petget issue.

It seems at the woof stage, because I was doing a cross build (host 32, target 64) that the 32 bit binaries got copied into /usr/local/petget. Consequently, when you try to update it silently crashes and actually trashes the database files. Attached are the offending files, the right ones which are 64 bit. They are debdb2pupdb (not really needed for us) and find_cat.

Copy them both into /usr/local/petget over writing the ones that are there.

---

For nvidia, maybe try booting pfix=nox, then run

Code: Select all

rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Run xwin and see if you get a desktop.

@01micko
While in Quirky I mounted my Slack64 savefile and deleted
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, next time I booted Slacko64 it showed a couple of
errors that I didn't make note of but it went straight to the desktop
and it's using the nouveau driver again.
I used your petget_utils.tar.bz2 and the PPM is working again.

Back in business, thanks.

Does good, very fast, but doesn't display the optical drives, so it doesn't allow mounting the CD it booted up from. I did an install to a usb drive by mounting the iso files from the partition I used to download the iso.

machine specs are below in my sig line
Dell optiplex 780, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz, 4g RAM, w/ATI RV620 LE Radeon HD 3450. Currently running a full install of Slacko 6.3.0 ( 32 bit version).

Thanks!

I think I know the cause. I'm missing a little utility called cddetect_quick. I knew I had to build it but missed it. Will be fixed in the next and when I build it I'll post the pet.

EDIT: here it is (untetsted)
