Adblock not working in SM 2.0.11 [solved]

#1 Post by nubc »

My main box is running Wary 5.1.1, which provided SM 2.0.11. I believe I have a reached an EOL point with this browser, because Adblock cannot be updated or upgraded. Just starting today, I am seeing ads all over the place, that I have not seen for years. My Adblock subscription (Fanboy) is displayed in red print complaining that it can't be updated. I tried to use PPM to install Firefox 3.6.13-w5, and got Namoroka 3.6.13 instead. Adblock (Plus & Edge) refuses to install in this browser. What are my options at this point? Is there a resource to update Adblock in older versions of SM and FF? Can I install a more recent version of FF in Wary 5.1.1 (and start it from command prompt, if necessary)? Please recommend possible solutions.

Perhaps I can help without much trouble. Read my post in the following thread:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 5a44dde218

You can use this way to block ads instead of adblock. Open:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt

Select all and copy to clipboard. Open with geany /etc/hosts and, after selecting again all, paste (substitute the content of the file). Save. Most annoying ads should be now blocked.

For the other questions I can say I found the way to install the latest firefox or seamonkey in wary 5.3 and 5.5 but it is not easy and "glibc upgrade" (search in HowTo section of this forum) is needed (certainly to install the latest firefox, not sure to install the latest seamonkey). You can try if the latest seamonkey is compatible with wary 5.1.1. Install dbus and dbus-glib by PPM and read the following thread:

Hi...

If you still want to try using 3.6.13-w5, see if this link helps. :)

Not surprisingly, by installing and uninstalling Namoroka (Firefox), I have messed up the operation of the desktop Browse icon. In the system folder usr/local/bin, two symlinks, gtkmod (symbolic link to mozstart) and netscape (symbolic link to mozstart), are showing yellow exclamation marks. I am going to run a live CD of Wary 5.1.1 to try to restore function to the desktop Browse icon. If anyone knows exactly how this is done, please join the fun.

For starters, where is mozstart supposed to be located in Wary 5.1.1?

EDIT: Fixed it. mozstart is located in usr/local/bin. I got a copy from the live CD and now SM starts by clicking the Browse desktop icon

Hi...

Does this mean your original issue is fixed?

Original issue, that Adblock is not working at full capacity, remains a problem. Unless I can find a resource that will update an older version of Adblock Plus (1.3.10), I will probably have to upgrade Puppy to a later version. At an earlier time, there was support for legacy versions of Adblock, but I can't find legacy support now.

What happens if I try to install a recent version of Firefox in Wary 5.1.1? Is a recent FF functional, at least? What is the earliest version of FF that will accept Adblock Plus 2.x?

Anybody got a .pet for FF 20+ for Wary 5.x?

I just downloaded a tarball for FF 26 from Mozilla.org. What do I do with it?

Firefox 26.0 in wary needs "glibc upgrade": it is not easy to get installed. Take my suggestion: download the tarball of the latest seamonkey. You have more probability to get it working without glibc upgrade. Read the link in my above post.

EDIT: I have made a test. Seamonkey 2.23 and Adblock 2.4 working in wary 5.3 without glibc upgrade. It needs only dbus and dbus-glib installed by PPM.

Thanks so much, watchdog. I will definitely try your Seamonkey package when I get a break. I should mention that Wary 5.1.1 is different from versions that followed, so I will approach this installation with caution, fingers crossed.

I am beginning to think that the recent dismal performance of Adblock is the result of a new campaign of ads created by Google. Perhaps the maintainers of Adblock just haven't caught up with latest ad innovations. Are others seeing ads that weren't visible a week ago? Example: 2-minute ads on YT videos that can be canceled after waiting ~5 seconds.

EDIT: I tried to acquire dbus through PPM, but none of the Official Wary 5 d/l sites have a working link. It's possible I could get dbus-glib this way, but PPM reports that dbus is missing when it checks for dependencies, so I put off installing it. Help?
