syncing folder with other computers

#1 Post by rmcellig »

I am using the latest Fatdog 64

All I want to do is sync a folder from one computer tot the other without using SSH or anything like that.

I'm in the middle of digitizing all of my LPs (around 5000). I want to make sure I have multiple exact copies of the folder I am saving the digitized FLAC files in. So that any computer on my LAN will have exact copies of the original source folder.

I am looking for an easy straight forward way to do this with an example if possible.

Thanks for guiding me in the right direction!

I've been using a widget called "syncbackup"

Looks like I must have gotten it here:

http://www.darhon.com/syncbackup

It says that it relies on rsync for a backend...

It will clone 2 drives (replicating deletions, if so configured).

I have a pair of external drives that I keep synced with this.

I don't know if Fatdog will run Debian tools or not.

Puppy comes with rsync, which I think will do what you want. I found rsync very simple to use all by itself. Also there's Copy Fast, which I think might do what you want. It uses rsync.

I was not really sure with rsync -- worried that I could get into trouble with the parameters.

The other tool allows you to save multiple setups. One just fully sync, one to just copy, etc.

The only problem I've had is when the disks get close to full, it tries to copy before deleting. So I created a setup to do only a delete, and then load the full sync config.

On a Windows machine, I found a tool "Karen's Replicator" which does the same operation. Replicate files and deletions (with appropriate settings).
