I have been using Puppy in various releases for YEARS. I have installed various releases to thumb drives , usb portable drives, internal drives - both IDE and ATA, laptops, desktops and even drives used in a hot swap sleeve set up. I have never before had a video or xinit problem before. I've been using Puppy as a portable OS because "it just worked" . Plug it in , . turn it on and I had usage of any computer I sat down in front of.
Now, these new releases come out that are supposed to be " better" .
But the display won't work once it had been installed. Works fine on the CD. BUT once it is installed to hard drive it stops.
The cursor pops up for about .20 seconds and then you get this screen that says if it doesn't work to run the xorgwizard. Well guess what........ that don't work. The solutions offered on screen and in the Forum don't work either.
I did get it to work for a while by copying the xinit config file from the CD to the appropriate location on the Hard drive.
Even my printer (a Canon MX512) worked like a charm.
We had a power outage the other night and upon reboot ... no display.
I am just wondering, why after all the other versions worked so well (back to 2.3) do these two turn out to NOT work soooooooo very well.
It would seem to me that this is a serious step BACKWARDS instead of making the overall Puppy OS "better".
So again, why "fix" something that's not broken ??
And what do you plan to do to fix this one ?
Puppy pfix= radeon.modeset=0 won't work either . Tried it and xwin jwm and xwin openbox and xwin jfvwm95|jwm and NONE of these work.
So, what next ?

I know what you mean sort of... Newer releases mean newer hardware and apps.
But any of the Linux distros on the web all have problems with some kind of hardware.
The newer ones work well for me on my old Pentium-D. Don`t know about new hardware.

To much emphasis on many variant Puppies. The O.S. is just generic, the apps. matter.!
Who cares what it`s based on? Just so it works well and has lots of apps. that work well.

You also have the fun bunny of kernel mode setting video but I believe its a case of the commonly heard 'it works live but not after full install' complaint.
With a monolithic system like linux.... new hardware support can mean older hardware new problem. The devs (of linux/kernels that is, not here) are usually working with shiny new machines and anything older than 6 months is irrelevant so regressions are often overlooked or ignored.
If it ain't broke don't fix it saying is so relevant here...I often think when reading posts 'why are you updating it worked just fine as is.'

Without this, Puppy would not work on new computers people are buying now.

Full installs are fully supported in Puppy, if you look in the forum, very few problems are dealing with full installs.Full installs are not and have never been fully supported and are often frowned upon so its the method of usage that's going to have the most problems..
From how puppy works:
A full install:
installs Puppy to an entire partition, which has to be a Linux partition (ext2, ext3, or reiserfs). This is recommended for developers or anyone wanting to compile applications, as it gives you lots of room.
This is the absolute simplest configuration. There is no ramdisk, the partition itself is mounted directly on the top "layer". In fact, if there are no ".sfs" extensions to load then Puppy will not use unionfs at all, so there are no layers.

Just so there is no confusion , my config follows..... and my machine IS a newer multi processor machine.
I thought the entire purpose for Puppy was to " Just Work". And to work on machines with little or no RAM. OLDER machines.
So what I'm hearing is that the entire focus of Puppy developers has changed to the attitude of Microsoft and the users who have been faithful and helped to make Puppy one of most used Versions of Linux are just going to be deleted as well??

Come on , get back to the basics of why this OS was developed in the beginning. So people won't have to use MS products and have a product that "JUST WORKS".
Well NOW it doesn't. JUST like MS products have always done , one "bug" after another because they are trying to edge out the OLD and so they can SELL the new.
Don't follow that path .
If the display worked in the older versions and it works from the CD, then there is no reason it should not work if installed to disk. It's the same boot image, Display drivers, and hardware that works on the CD but not on the disk install.
Is this Planned to work this way ? I mean, that's how MS does it Isn't it ?
Sorry for the rant. But, I tried a lot of different versions of Linux before I settled on Puppy as the one I would use for MY OS on MY Machines. It is just really disappointing to get a reply like that.

Come on , get back to the basics of why this OS was developed in the beginning. So people won't have to use MS products and have a product that "JUST WORKS".
Well NOW it doesn't. JUST like MS products have always done , one "bug" after another because they are trying to edge out the OLD and so they can SELL the new.
Don't follow that path .
If the display worked in the older versions and it works from the CD, then there is no reason it should not work if installed to disk. It's the same boot image, Display drivers, and hardware that works on the CD but not on the disk install.
Is this Planned to work this way ? I mean, that's how MS does it Isn't it ?
Sorry for the rant. But, I tried a lot of different versions of Linux before I settled on Puppy as the one I would use for MY OS on MY Machines. It is just really disappointing to get a reply like that.

What you describe here is pointing to:But the display won't work once it had been installed. Works fine on the CD. BUT once it is installed to hard drive it stops.
The cursor pops up for about .20 seconds and then you get this screen that says if it doesn't work to run the xorgwizard. Well guess what........ that don't work. The solutions offered on screen and in the Forum don't work either.
I did get it to work for a while by copying the xinit config file from the CD to the appropriate location on the Hard drive.
Even my printer (a Canon MX512) worked like a charm.
We had a power outage the other night and upon reboot ... no display.

What version of Puppy?
What type install?
You do exactly what?
You see exactly what?
We only know what you tell us.
Statements like, that program did nothing to fix problem, tells us nothing.

Could be as simple as having to do a file system check, to fix errors in filesystem to restore to normal.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I get that you have experienced some frustration, hence the rant. However, some of your comments seem out of line... If you are really "sorry for the rant", I suggest it is in your best interests to be reminded of a few things:
- The members of this Community are volunteers,
We the Community have spent countless hours helping thousands of puppy users,
We can help you better if you focus on the pertinent details regarding your difficulties with using Puppy Linux, rather than resorting to attacking the Community at large, and the nature of Puppy Linux in general.

a. I configure my Puppy so it treats a pupsave file on an internal HDD partition as though it's on a Flash Drive.
b. Then...
Disable auto-saving from RAM back to the pupsave.
c. And...
Configure my Puppy so it asks at shutdown/reboot whether I want to save or not.
d. One beneficial result of this:
An improper power-off causes no problems.
[Because the Puppy has NEVER yet been caught by a power-off in the process of copying back from RAM to pupsave]
I sometimes improper-power-off deliberately.
e.g. At next reboot following such an improper power-off, "Precise-5.6.1" always auto-scans the host partition filesystem [ext3], and the pupsave filesystem [ext3].
I've never noticed any problems afterward.
2. My desktop PC hardware was bought in 2012.
My new monitor [24-inch BENQ GL2450HM LED] bought 2013 Dec 6th.
Only one small problem after swapping in the new monitor:
Desktop icon for the sr0 [optical disk] filesystem won't stay where placed.

Hi @Mstlpflx,
In looking at the specs that you have shared, you DO NOT have a "traditional" older PC. Those PCs are 32bit systems.
You have a 64bit fire-breather with enough RAM to support several Virtual systems and to be a home NAS, as well.
You "may" want to try TaZoC's LightHouse64 or Kirk's FATDOG as each of these will provide a jump in both performance and operations.
Beware: The most common 2 problems in Puppyland are still video and audio. ...

I had the same problem with Lighthouse64 after I tried to change the window manager from Openbox to JWM.
The Desktop would come up for abt .2 seconds and crash.
I tried the common remedies ( xwin openbox , xwin jwm , xwin lxde , xorgwizard - choose, probe, vesa, etc ) . NONE worked.
SO, I booted to CD in Ram , nocopy , found my save file, opened it, found xorg conf ( there were like 8 of them and each more or less exactly the same ) . Then I deleted them all. I was going on the assumption that a NEW one would be created when I rebooted to the DISK where LH64 was installed.
VIOLA` !! I was right and all is good now.
Had I had enough presence of mind to try this on Slacko system then I may NOT have had to rant as I did.
MANY apologies. MANY requests for forgiveness and MANY thanks to all who looked beyond the rant and attempted to help in my time of need and present state of desperation.
I wanted to post this where all could see it because it really was a simple fix and MAYBE it can help someone else.
