Ted Dog, can you make a patch and do a pull request? That is, sync your git fork with woof-CE testing, then fix up the command how you reckon it should be, then on the GitHub site click "pull request". THat prompts us to look at your changes, pull them into testing branch and make a woof build and test them! I don't know your experience with git so tell me to shove off if you know better. :)
can I say shove off anyway...

well due to a fall and visit to ER I was not able to make much progress setting up wolf I did set up an account at github and checked out some ones build. However I am at the Ranch this weekend during our icestorm weekend to run water and feed ritters Texans generally do not have to worry about long hard freezes so none of the extra water protection messures are put in place. Most of my well water system is above ground and uninsulated. So I am turning it on to pump water after nightfall and turn it off when above freezing Saturday afternoon.

but My new android phone allows me to download pets and isos files at 4G LTE. I have been very conservative on my data usage and have about 1G left till Sunday rollover to new month. Ive downloaded this version and can reroll iso with Bluray and patch multisession to match so no big deal. At the ranch I can get both San Antonio and Austin TV so I hope something is on somewhere..
Still have the zip file of wolf on my main laptop I have with me but without real internet I m not sure if I can do much.

I decided to start using the personal version of Firefox and not the ESR version.

Installed a Firefox 24 pet package from Lucid Puppy repository.
This personal Firefox 24 auto updated to firefox 25.0.1
Firefox internal update works in it.

Did have one problem.
It made Help, from the desktop icon and the menu, not work.

Had to change the default HTML viewer to the defaultbrowser to fix it.

The defaulthtmlviewer was set to firefox.

Still have both versions of Firefox installed. Just the Firefox command does not say which one to use.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Bigpup, Lucid packages are only tested on Lucid. 01micko might have different standards for the browser pet packages in Slacko. This solution might cause no problems. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 554#741554
FWIW, they do the same security updates on ESR as the regular versions...
Yes James C, but the "default" channel versions do not update. Look at Firefox -> Help -> About.

Playdayz,

I do not think it would have been an issue with any other internet browsers. Trying to us a different type of Firefox browser, that needed different start commands, I think caused the problem.

Anyway, the key component seemed to be what was the default html viewer.
Changed it to defaultbrowser from just firefox.
Now when I click on help
It starts the defaulthtmlviewer
Which is the defaultbrowser
Which is Firefox 25.0.1 not Firefox ESR

From the start. Might be better to have defaulthtmlviewer set to use the defaultbrowser.

This is testing, so shows something that could happen.

Speaking of updates:
- TAS-1.3
- FFConvert-1.4

I don't know if it was intentional removal, but accidently noticed the lack of /lib/libgudev-1.0.so..., which was present in previous Slackos.
Just being vigilant.

Experimental. Chrome 31 for testing in Slacko 5.6.3. This uses a different method to start chrome than the Chrome 28 pet in the repo, though it is based on that. The difference is the exec command in /usr/bin/google-chrome.sh. I think it starts up quicker this way (but Firefox starts up faster!). Chrome has built-in flashplayer which I tested with youtube. The "chrome phone home" options are turned off by default in Settings -> Advanced settings (the ones that can be). It does not set itself as defaultbrowser. I almost forgot, you will need to install GConf from PPM, which will also install polkit.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/google/chrome:/usr/lib/firefox-17.0.11:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
#LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libpuppygc.so" exec /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome "$@"
exec /opt/google/chrome/chrome --user-data-dir=/root/.config/google-chrome "$@"

It still does those phone home and NSA things, even if they can and have been turned off.

Hope it is not a too annoying derail but tell us more or start
a thread about it. Such is very intersting. What source for that claim
do you have. So how or what to do knowing this. How to prevent it
from happening?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Testing on Pentium D 3.4GHz machine. Seems to be working well so far. Created a 512MB ext4 pupsave on NTFS-formatted hard drive and it worked fine after booting.

Latest mtPaint is v3.44.36. Forum thread.

Currently running pfix=ram and set wireless up with Network Wizard rather than Frisbee. Connection is working fine, however on the icon bar the icon for no connection is still showing. IIRC on the save where I am using Frisbee it is showing the right icon when the connection is up.

No need for a new thread because this is all I can do. I think Chrome does not do the things that are turned off, anyone can check, but i agree completely that it does other things that compromise privacy, as does everything google. However, some people prefer Chrome anyway and have google accounts and so forth. Chrome used to start faster than Firefox, but now FF starts faster on Slacko. Chrome still does have the latest built-in flashplayer 11.9 which may be of use to some people. The picture shows the things turned off under Advanced Settings. Unfortunately Iron has stopped at version 29 for Linux, don't know why. Once it was said that adding the following start-up option would disable more snooping --disable-metrics (add to /usr/bin/google-chrome.sh). I can't really check, maybe someone who has the tools and skill to watch what is really sent can check. Personally fwiw I am very happy with the performance and privacy of Firefox in Slacko

These are the options I used for Lucid:

Code: Select all

exec /opt/google/chrome/chrome --user-data-dir=/root/.config/google-chrome --disable-metrics --disk-cache-size=10000000 --media-cache-size=10000000 "$@"

A good thing about Chrome is that Flash is included.

As a perennial Noob Flower I fail to remember the small details. '
I had to ask everytime I needed to update Flash player
and hopefully Chrome take care of that?

I am so mixed about Google way of wanting to know everything.

Okay back to the thread. Thanks for giving us this version.
I am very lazy these days so I just keep it for later days. :)

I have 5.6.3 now so I am lagging behind. hopefully I catch up later

  • Should GConf and also polkit be in the new Slacko base?
    Should Flash be in base?
    Should JAVA be in base?
    Should SAMBA be in base?
By doing so, would this mean that the base is upgraded to a "new" base?

Dunno ...

Problem
Much of what I've desktop tested seems OK. Only problem has been in this SLACKO system getting confused and "losing" its navigation to the NAS units. Seems something goes wrong in either "mount" subsystem or LAN base, as, after day(s) of use, ROX (and term) cannot navigate the NAS filesystem. Once this noticed, No desktop applications can access the NAS. I can ping the NAS, seems that system still has some vision of LAN resources. Most currently, I've found that quitting desktop, unmounting resources it cannot navigate, remount and restart of deskop is a recovery option.

Has others had problems with this beta maintaining a link to their home NAS with thousands of files?

Thanks, in advance, for any insights
P.S. This is occurring on a Live "MultiPUP" DVD boot without a save-session. <=== edited to provide more environmentals

Another old computer, another manual frugal install of 5.6.3. All basics good so far.
Using nouveau.noaccel=1 kernel parameter.

Anything, specific, you are doing, when this happens?
How are you running Slacko?
Type install, etc....?
Computer specs?

Hello bigpup! Thanks for answering! :)

Frugal install on Acer Aspire One ZG8

Which parametres from HardInfo should i post so you can have a complete picture of the computer's specs?

It happens randomly! When I plug in a usb, when I have a window open and minimize it the drive icons are gone, when i just stare at the desktop, any time...
