Anyway, this is not the box with the retro install and not the one at the top of the page with the same error message.....surely doesn't like XP partitions. :)

Since something similar occurred in Barry K's Precise builds the possible fix is here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 497#716497
Pick a Puppy where NTFS mounting works and copy its ntfs-3g components into Precise.

For example, I went into Wary 5.3 and got the files /bin/ntfs-3g, /lib/libntfs-3g.so.79 and /lib/libntfs-3g.so.79.0.0.

I dropped these into Precise and mounted an NTFS partition. It worked.

Have you tried precise 5.5 and see if the it works and if so let me know and I will upload those files for everyone who would like to do this. I only run Puppy on the two computers in my house.

@Billtoo the kernel source sfs files should be at Barryk's site where he as the others.

Cheers

Hi oldyeller

The change in kernel to 3.8.4 for ovprecise5.8retro has resulted in the wl.ko Broadcom driver to go missing.....

My memory says that BK's original target for Precise5.7.1retro with k3.2.48 was as a wary replacement with support for as much legacy hardware as possible - with your change to k3.8.4 does your retro still meet the same goals??

Cheers

Hi,
The kernel source that should match OV58 with the pae kernel is there
but when I tried to compile the proprietary ati driver it failed, the
log showed an error about header something or other, I don't have the
log file anymore.

There is no kernel source sfs for 384 at Barry's site.

I decided to try Barry's 5.7 retro so I did a manual frugal install of
that and the proprietary driver compiled fine:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Fri 29 Nov 2013 on Precise Puppy 5.7 Linux 3.2.48 i686
5.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: RS880M 01.00

X Server: Xorg Driver: fglrx
X.Org version: 1.11.3
dimensions: 1024x600 pixels (270x158 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: ATI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.3.11672 Compatibility Profile Context

AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo K125 Processor
Core 0: @1700 MHz

Precise retro runs a little cooler on this netbook when the
proprietary driver is installed, about 3-4 degrees hotter without it.

I used the adrive.sfs that I made in 5730 and it works fine Barry's
retro version.

Thanks.

I am not sure what drivers are support in this kernel. How would one check on this and to add or enable drivers would the kernel need to be recomplied? A lot of this is new to me the kernel that is.

@James C thanks.

@Billtoo; not sure where the kernel sources are than for the 384 kernel. This kernel was already complied and downloaded with woof. The driver that you compiled still might work in OVPrecise-retro though.

One day I will have to the that kernel build kit that mick uses.

Hello Everyone,

I have built the retro with the 3.2.48 kernel so this should be close to what Barryk did. So I will be removing the old devx and the iso. So don't download anything for the OVPrecise-retro for about 4hrs or until posted.

Cheers

A retro kernel is much appreciated; 3.2.48 is relatively new and supports lots of old hardware, I wish more puplets were built with it.

Success.

Took /bin/ntfs.3g , /lib/libntfs-3g.so , /lib/libntfs-3g.so.79 and /lib/libntfs-3g.so.79.0.0 from Wary 5.5 to replace the files in the puppy_ovprecise_5.8.sfs.

Tested on three boxes with XP NTFS partitions.....no error messages and no problems mounting the partitions.

I unsquashed the puppy_ovprecise_5.8.sfs. , replaced things and resquashed.... working well here.

Hello, oldyeller,

Maybe that is written somewhere, but I can not find what it means to ovprecise?
The same kernel (3.9.11) as upupPrecise. (PAE-version)
What are the major differences? Everything works fine for me.
