[mTools] A word of warning

#1 Post by Béèm »

I tried to use mTools to move a file from one place to another.
As I didn't find a move function I used the copy button to do a copy first and than deleted the file.

What I didn't see was that in the small message area there was a message about not having enough space on the target place, but then it was too late. The source was deleted. Used to Windows, I expect a pop-up error panel, but not so with mTools.

So just a word of warning about this situation.

BTW. The source and target places being vfat, is there a way to 'undelete' the file? The file is a .pnm image file.
I saw tools for ext2 and ext3 but not for vfat.
A lost case?

PS I wasn't able to use ROX for this, as I do normally. For some reason ROX doesn't stick in memory on that particular directory.

you could try Fatback and/or Foremost
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/DotPups

i found that this was more useful:
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm
it runs in Windows, so if you have only one Windows os on your machine, installing it and running Windows increases the risk that the deleted files will be over written

there are other programs, that might be better, but i only have experience with these

Thanks GuestToo

I have PC Inspector File which works in Windows, but the partition is a special one not accessable from Windows ( a kind of back-up partition on a Thinkpad). I can access it from Puppy, so I'll try one of the two others.

Nor fatback nor foremost did find the deleted file.
In fact they didn't find any deleted files.
mTools did a thorough job in deleting it, unless I misunderstood how to make fatback/foremost work.
Well foremost seems to be restricted to certain file types and the deleted .pnm (an output of a scanner) isn't part of it.

As expected PC Inspector couldn't access that special partition, but it's a nice powerfull program anyway.

The partially copied .pnm file show a big part of the image scanned.
I'll try to a sensable picture file out of it by capturing the desktop.

If you used fdisk to change the type of partition then it may be visable from windows. Do you know of a way to un mke2fs a partition back to a fat one ? I did a silly thing :-(

The machine is a thinkpad R40 running XP.
In the beginning there was one ntfs partition.
Then I activated the rapid restore facility, which created a special partition only accessable by the rapid restore program and not seen by XP.
Afterwards I started to do tests with Puppy and to my surprise puppy saw this partition as a vfat and I started to use it.
So there is no question of a ext2fs.
My only hope was to find a program under Linux that could do an undelete, but I think now it's a lost case.
Thanks for enquiring.
