pBurn ask you to do ONE test-burn

#1 Post by zigbert »

I am continuing the work to simplify and improve pBurn.
I want to minimize the number of settings in the burn-options dialog. That's why I ask you to do this simple test:

Burn a data CD on-the-fly. (Burn an iso-image is something else.)
It doesn't matter what version of pBurn you are running, but please fill the disc to test the memory-handling fully.

Image

By default, pBurn uses the 'temporary storage' option, but I want to simplify this if CD's burn fine on-the-fly. In the old days it was recommended to use temporary storage for CDs, but now when memory is a less limitation on systems, I think it would work just fine on-the-fly. As you might figure out of this, it will be even more interesting if you are running a system with 256Mb of ram or less.
I don't want to change these options if I am not absolutely sure of the consequences. pBurn are too stable to fool with. That is why I need help by several of you.

It would also be valuable to know what burner device you have.

Image

Hopefully the burning will succeed, but whatever result you get, it would be great if you attach the logfile here.

Thanks a lot for your help

Hello Sigmund,

The lowest RAM computer I have here is my old SiS tower with 480 MB of RAM and quite a slow 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 single core processor. I am running pBurn 4.1.2 in Dpup Wheezy 5X15 with my cdrtools package.

I find that the optical drives in these older computers are often faulty or broken, but I recently replaced the one in this machine with a brand new one so I know it works OK.

The name of the burner device at /dev/sr0 shows as HPDVD that' all, but in the log I see "DVD Writer 1135t"

I decided to burn an .iso of Xubuntu Precise (as a single file) because at 693 MB it almost fills the CD-RW.

I selected the on-the-fly option. The burn seems to have worked OK.
I think the best thing for me to do with the log is attach it for you.

I think if you're burning an iso image it is the same as not burning on the fly.
Anyway, I've always burned on the fly, but on on modern machines (900Mhz and up, not sure about the ram - recently 512 to 1024, but possibly down to 128 originally). Only with high speed drives - 52x for cd and 16x for DVD.

Disciple is right, burning an iso-image will not test the system. Sorry for not being specific, I have updated the main post.

The point of on-the-fly is to both pack the data and burn it at the same time. In opposite to first do the packing (building an iso-image) and then do the burning.

Thank for your help

OK, what I did was burn a copy of the .iso rather than the usual unpacking of the .iso to create a bootable disc. I thought that this would be the same as just burning 693 MB of any other type of data.

So, for the purposes of this test, does it make any difference if I burn 2 files of 350 MB each or 100 files of 7 MB each?

LATER:- Back on the test machine now and have just done a burn of 2 videos, a few large .pets and a jpeg image, making 699 MB of data. Attaching the log.

I have now 2 successful logs - 0 bad ones - that is 100% :)

LOL, was going to get the new pBurn to grab some code setups, but could not help but respond, I've kind off, burned my own on the fly stuff for so long (w/o pBurn, since 2005) that I've never ran into an issue, EVER, using on the fly burning. :D you can even remote burn on the fly to a networked computer that has a burner. - :)

Worked fine over here.
sh-4.1# dmesg | egrep -i --color 'cdrom|dvd|cd/rw|writer'
[ 0.374409] ata3.00: ATAPI: HL-DT-STDVD+-RW GSA-H21N, 1.01, max UDMA/33
[ 1.006618] scsi 2:0:0:0: CD-ROM HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N 1.01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 1.009707] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 1.009712] cdrom: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
Does it matter that this is a full installation? Because if I was supposed to try in ram mode I can do it again. :)

OK, I will try it on my other computer, whose CD-RW drive seems to work.

But I don't understand what you mean by
please fill the disc
.Shall I try to put 800 MB on a 700MB disc?

No. 690 is suitable.

Thank you

Does it matter if its a CDR vs a CDRW? And, as I review this thread, it seems you do NOT want us to try this with an existing multi-session CD, is that correct?

Well, Sigmund, eventually some burning seems to have occurred.

The task bar shows the main program and the "pBurn - Burning progress"
and seems to have hung.

I don't know what to do other than Ctrl-alt-Backspace.

Hi @Sheldonisaac. Did you notice if the writer's light was blinking or was the light stopped on OR off?

Hi, gcmartin.
By the time I saw your message and checked, the writer's light was on solid, not blinking.
Now it is off.
The screen on the computer on which the burning was attemped shows
the last several tracks (I had done another run, this time with only 77MB, on a 4x CD-RW),
and the computer is frozen.
The last thing on the screen is the yellow-on-black
BURN-free was never needed.
Hm. AFter I did the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and restarted the Xwindows, I clicked on the sr0 icon (this is under Lucid Puppy 5.2.8.-005)
and saw the directory I'd told pBurn to burn.
And in it was able to play mp3 files.

Should I try again with 649MB?

Where do I find the log, if one was created?

Sheldon

No multi-session CD, just a fresh huge burn to test your memory behavior.

Does it work for you if burn with the default setting - Use Temporary storage?

Log is available at the error/finish dialog. If burning hung, log could be in /root/.pburn/tmp/log. Will be deleted next time pBurn loads.
