However when I remove the CD i cannot login:

There's only a message saying:

You have missed the step where you install a bootloader, so your computer is still seeing the GRUB2 bootloader from a previous Linux install.

Run Grub4Dos Bootloader Config from the System menu.

trying to set bootloader config

#6 Post by hilfer »

OK after reading and searching fo solutions I am now trying to set the grub boatloader config.
My steps are:
1-Simple- try to install grubautomatically
2-buffer console - used standard
3-installed to: /dev/sda
4-Root - install to superblock linux partition (I had tried before MBR option)

Here I got the message:

Grub was successfully installed on the linux partition /dev/sda.
You should check and edit the "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file on "dev/sda" if needed. You may want to change the location "/boot/vmlinuz", and/or options passed to any linux kernell listed there. !!!

Then I tried to reboot without the CD but it won't woork.

I have several option menus but nothing works.

Any ideas ??

Is the patition marked as bootable?
Check it using gparted (booting fron the CD is OK).

Play a little with Gparted to get familiar but don't make any changes.

Find the partition where you installed Puppy, right click on it and tick to set it as bootable.

If no luck, put here what error you get while booting.

What Puppy version are you using?

Have you done a full or frugal install?

Are you using Grub4Dos Bootloader Config?

You should be installing GRUB to the MBR, not to a partition boot sector.

Ignore the message about the boot flag not being set.

When I right click I see only 3 selectable options:
UNMONT
MANAGE FLAGS
INFORMATION

None gives me the option to set partition as bootable. !!!

Thank you too for your kind support.

It depends. In hilfer's situation, the machine was already booting to the old GRUB, so setting the boot flag would not change anything.

That's what I meant, the boot flag.

But if rcrsn51 says it's not necessary, take his advice, he's more experienced than me.

Somewhere in that gparted window you should have seen the word boot. A console and

Code: Select all

fdisk -l
should also show Boot on the readout and a asterisk "*" under the bootable partition/drive.
You are close. Just no cigar. :)

All info I am saying can be found booting with live cd.

/dev/sda is the drive, not the partition
It needs to be /dev/sda1 or which ever partition the menu.lst
is located on.

I use legacy grub 2013 by rcrsn51 for my full installs.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Yes, I'm using the live CD, that is not the problem.

Now when in that gparted windows I only see the word boot if I right click over the partition /dev/sda1 and then select "manage flags" There I can see:

Boot
Diag
hidden
Iba
Ivm
palo
prep
raid

I tried to select boot but it didn't work, had to boot with cd again.

one more thing

#18 Post by hilfer »

Just one more thing.

When I said I was completely new to this is was not only refering to Puppy, but also to linux world.
These are my first steps into linux, so I ask you to be patient as I don't really understand how things work on this OS.

tks for your patience.

[Off topic]People new to this forums, often say that are very friendly.

All of us we have been newies some day, so been patient to newcomers it's a must

Here we are very patient but you have to do your part, read, search, read, ask, read and read again. :)

Things will become more clear every day.

I been playing with linux since 2006, almost every day I learn something new (and discover there is something new that I ignore).

Here in the forums you will find people that are linux encyclopedias (not me)
[/OffTopic]

Your problem it's not solved yet, so... tell us exactly what you see when you can not boot.

A grub error maybe?

Which one?

(Write it in a paper if you cannot copy-paste and put it here).

Here to help.
