PostPosted: Sat 12 Oct 2013, 06:49    Post_subject:  LxPup : a Puppy with LXDE as its desktop environment
Sub_title: Derivatives of various SPup's and Upup's descended from LxPup13.01

Visit the LxPup Support Website for latest download links

See this post for LxPup14.10 beta versions

See this post for LxPupTahr14.10

LxPup14.03-sp1 and LxPupPrecise14.02-sp1 are available from DOWNLOAD-1 or DOWNLOAD-2 approx. 180MB

LxPup14.03 is a version of Puppy using the LXDE desktop environment and is an updated “descendent” of Jejy69’s LxPup13.01
    LxPup-14.03-s-nopae is a derivative of Slacko 5.7 using the non-PAE 4g kernel 3.4.82 {devx}

    LxPup-14.03-s-pae is a derivative of Slacko 5.7.0 using the PAE kernel 3.10.32 {devx}

    LxPupPrecise-14.02-pae is a derivative of Puppy Precise 5.7.1 using the PAE kernel 3.9.11 {devx}

    LxPupPrecise-14.02-retro is a derivative of Puppy Precise 5.7.1 Retro using the non-PAE kernel 3.2.48 {devx}

LxPup14.03 uses the components from LxPup-by-SFS added onto the Slacko5.7 and Precise 5.7.1 bases using the Woofy0.91 and Edit-Initrdgz-1.4 tools

LxPup14.03 offers Openbox as it’s window manager, LxPanelX (a fork of LxPanel) as it’s panel manager and PCManFM as it’s file manager.

Optional enhancements to the desktop are available via the Options button on the Change Appearance menu item. (add a top panel or wbar, add extra right click options, add desktop drive icons and support for floppy disks).

Watch a YouTube review of the earlier LxPup13.11....

There is a pet to revert to Openbox-3.5.0 on the download page.

You can also add Compiz to Slacko versions of LxPup (n.b. experimental) by adding an sfs and a setup pet.

Feedback is welcomed
Cheers
peebee

p.s the sfs in the iso is xz compressed

p.p.s use the {devx} links above to download the devx sfs's as the Sfs Manager does not show them

p.p.p.s you can achieve exactly the same end result apart from "branding" for Upup-Precise and Upup-Raring with the LxPup-by-SFS add-on.

If you would prefer to install just OpenBox and LxPanel onto your Puppy instead of the full LXDE (i.e. retaining Rox as the file manager) then try OpenBoxPlus from Vicmz.

I did a manual frugal install to a 16gb SDHC card.

video-info-glx 1.5.1 Sat 12 Oct 2013 on LxPup 13.10 Linux 3.4.52 i686

X Server: Xorg Driver: vesa
X.Org version: 1.12.4
dimensions: 3360x1080 pixels (959x315 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

Downloading the iso was fast.

Updated wiki
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LxPup

The numbering scheme is potentially confusing. Was LxPup14 a beta?

Also is the journal dead?
http://lxpup.weebly.com/journal.html

Cool

Thanks.
LxPup14 was declared final by Jejy69 I believe and was a more radical change from trad Pups in that he had moved away from ppm to gslapt as the package manager...but his website only offers 13.01 and 13.04Beta6. 14 is however available on sourceforge. http://sourceforge.net/projects/checkmatelxde/files/

LxPup13.10 is numbered from the 10th month of the 2013th year and is more of a successor to LxPup13.01 I believe.

LxPup13.10 is smaller at 177MB because it comes with a different selection of "eye candy".

Hope this is OK.
Cheers

I moved my SDHC card to another pc that also has an Nvidia card, I had
to go through choosing the driver etc again but it's working fine.

X Server: Xorg Driver: nvidia
X.Org version: 1.12.4
dimensions: 3360x1080 pixels (871x277 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 560 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 4.3.0 NVIDIA 319.60

I couldn't find any option in the menus to add workspaces so I clicked
on obconf in PCManFM and added 2 more workspaces, the panels were lost
temporarily but restarting the wm fixed it.

I'm enjoying this pup and still trying stuff out, thanks for your new
iso.

Desktop -> Change appearance -> Windows -> Desktops

Glad to hear it's working OK for you.

Hello peebee,

A very nice Slacko derived puplet. Congratulations! I'm sure Jejy69 is proud that his work and influence is carried forth. Who is this smargl7 bloke anyway? Never heard of him.

One Q.. is your compiz sfs compatible?

One annoyance (and this is one for the PCman devs, not you). When you mount a drive in the file manager and it happens to be the only tab open, on dismount PCmanfm closes. Would be more intuitive for incomers if it defaulted to $HOME instead of closing. I might raise it with them.

TBH, I think this interface is the future (ha... yes, there is probably puppy a future, and if not a puppy like future) given that JWM, while very light on resources, does look aged, no matter how tasteful the theme is, and that rox seems to be approaching its "use by" date, given that no development has happened in 4 years, apart from essential bugfixes.

Obligatory screeny...

Hi peebee,

I am downloading as I type this out. It sounds like you did a great job on this. I am very sure that Jejy69 would be pleased.

I too have enjoyed his work, Now it will be yours as well. Well be testing soon.

Cheers

Hi peebee,

Thank you very much for this pup!
I was beginning to think about saying farewell to puppy linux, given the current situation, but your Lxpup changed my mind Cool

I had tried your -by-sfs's, but always ran into problems. ( bastard puppies: half jwm, half lxde) (and half bert's clumsiness Laughing )

This Puppy just works, and elegantly.

One little thing, I changed the title bar in /usr/bin/lxp-shutdown:

to:

This is a lovely Puppy Cool

Gratefully,
Bert

Hi Bert

Glad you're enjoying the new iso...

I did know about the window title (it also applies to the Appearance changer window BTW) - it is a consequence of the way I built the iso using the LxPup-by-SFS components directly. I'll bear it in mind to change properly in the future.

Cheers
peebee
