Presonus Firebox on Puppy

#1 Post by autumnleaves »

Hello,
I would like to recycle an older Windows system as a studio machine for live music recording. Is there a way to configure Presonus Firebox to work with one of the Puppy distros? Or another linux distro?

I suppose it all hinges on whether Linux can handle firewire...

Thanks for input

Handy Link:

I don't use Firewire, so I can't tell, but for audio there is a specialized flavor called PuppyStudio that you might be interested in:

It works flawlessly for me ( I use a USB mic).

Presonus again

I only just managed to get started on this installation, since the computer required some maintenance first. Given that I am already familiar with Precise, and that Studio has apparently been orphaned, I decided to work with the Ubuntu/Precise desccribed in the Ubuntu forum. Here is the present status:
Install the 2.6.31-10-rt kernel (called "linux-rt" in synaptic)
--cannot find this in packages
Install startup manager and use it to select the rt kernel as default
--cannot find
Install jack and Ubuntu studio controls
--installed (is Jack-mixer the right one)
Install libffado, ffado-tools, ffado-mixer-qt4 and ffado-dbus-server
--done, although one or two dependencies may not have been found
Go into System>Users & Groups and add your user account to the audio and video groups
--I imagine this does not apply
Open system>studio controls and check raw1394 access box
--Studio controls does not start

I assume that I cannot start studio controls due to other missing elements. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. The thread also talks about editing audio.config. Are all these edits necessary?

Thanks,
