Subject description: Do I want one?

It happened last Monday while reading Distrowatch news...the new Mintbox2 was briefly mentioned...I clicked the link..

and from my belly button a sweet voice said: yes! I want one...
Being a grown up I could of course easily see this was just another desire trying to get me into its trap. So I consciously said no and closed the fit-pc tab.

But an undercurrent continued all week, a sneaky dialogue that kept going, making fun of my adult brain...:

I want one!
But you don't need it, your atom board is more than powerful enough for Puppy!

Yeah, but look at that horsepower, all passively cooled, totally silent!
Your homemade atom mini is also completely silent. Besides, with that HDD spinning, you know there will that noise that irritates you. Upgrading to SSD will make it even more expensive.

Okay, but it's 5 times more powerful with about the same low power consumption. These new generation CPUs must surely mean the end of the atom era. Imagine what I could do, if I had one...
Tell me. Anything you can't do now?

I could finally use my new 60GB usb 3.0 key to its full potential.
Hmm, expensive way to do so.

I could start using e-sata! I could set up a NAS. I could..
Didn't you say you were going to simplify your computing?

But I could use Mint or any other full blown linux and get rid of those crumbly Puppy fonts. You know my ebook and pdf collection and why I seldom read from it now...
You do have a point there...but did you forget your vow to always run as root and never go back to all that fiddling other distros prescribe?
But let's stop this nonsense, you don't have the money!

I still have that envelope..
There's only 200 euros left in it.

I could ask..
No, she would never agree.

But imagine coming into my room and it's sitting there on the desk. It just oozes quality! It's just so sexy!
Maybe if you could think away the rest of your desk, the coffee cups and stains, all the 'important' notes you keep piling up, all those handy cables you keep handy. I will not even begin about the dust.

But I eh, I want one!
Did you forget the fun you had building your own PuppyBox and the joy of keeping things simple?
Maybe it's time to brainstorm about a PuppyBox2. Would make an interesting forum discussion!

I don't know, have no idea what gets their juices flowing really..
Never underestimate your friends Smile

I wonder if I could put a Paypal donation button on this forum?
No

A Bitcoin button?
No way

Hello Bert,

the coolest thing appears to me is the case.
But 600.- is too expensive.

My new Asrock2550 was just 70 Euro.
Mounted it into old case which is hanging behind the monitor.

I suggest waiting some weeks or months and then buy a tablet for under 200.- They are becoming cheaper and more powerful each weak.
Small screen and our bad eyes should make no problem because we can connet HDMI output to wide screen monitor.

Until then we can play with android-x86.

Have a nice day

A male price, yes indeed Laughing

Haha, it wasn't really meant as a serious (p)review, just me struggling with irrational desires Wink . I did not do any reading or research before posting the above (and it shows...)

Yes, wonderful case, but the powerful fan-less processor I found equally impressive.

You've been mentioning it several times here in the forums, so I had a look and ..just bought one! It's sitting here in front of me, still in its antistatic wrap.
That price seemed more fitting for my envelope Smile
( I paid some 68,- + 38,- for ram.)

Thanks L18L!

Cheers

You're going to have some fun with that... it has Poulsbo graphics. Lemme tell ya, they're a real trip...

To be fair it looks like the Mintbox2 has those as well... wonder how they dealt with 'em...

I also had it sit there 2 long weeks!
Because I had tried to buy used RAM (not ebay but amazon).
First private seller did not ship nor react on my requests.
Second one was good (14.5 Euro + 4)

If you mount the board into a case then do not forget to plug in cable nr 11 (see page 11 of manual) Wink

How come I bought a new board?
At first I wanted to post it in "Our Dumbest Mistakes".
My old fan board Via 8002G (openchrome video) always had to be restarted several times recently.
I had opened the case and cleaned but after a short time it stopped again.
So I was thinking: 5 years old must be broken.
Tried to buy online using RasPi
RasPi's browser could not buy where it costs 68
so I went to a site for 69.95 (incl. shipping).
When I unmounted the old board another hidden large dust fell out of the case!
So just tidying everything I would have saved some money!

Anyhow now it is:
- fanless
- 64 bit
- USB 3.0
- HDMI
- with or without UEFI
- double (or quad) core 1.8 GHz
- android-x86 is running

It has been a risk since neither manufacturer nor vendor had said it works with linux.
But it does!

Have fun Laughing
