Vault Pup Subject description: Secure your Bitcoins with Puppy |
|
I'm curious how many people here on the forums mine for or use Bitcoins. I recently cut down Puppy Precise 5.7.1 and added offline/cold storage Armory support to it to create a completely secure way of storing your Bitcoins with Puppy. It is designed to run off of a USB stick and will keep your bitcoins safe from any hacking attempts as it is impossible to connect to the internet with Vault Pup.
Basically what you do is create a Bitcoin wallet with a Armory/Bitcoin-Qt combo on Windows/Linux/whatever OS you use and then create a wallet file using Vault Pup. You then create a watch-only wallet on Vault Pup and transfer it over to your other computer which watches your wallet using the Armory/Bitcoin-Qt client. Whenever you want to transfer funds from your wallet you create an unsigned transaction with your watch-only wallet and then input that transaction into Vault Pup (with a usb stick. I created a seperate partition on my Vault Pup USB for transferring these transactions) and sign the transaction with Vault Pup then send the transaction back to the original computer to send out to the network.
I know it's a long read but I've been involved in the Bitcoin game for a while now and if anyone has any interest in this I'll gladly post up a link the to Puppy for others to use and set up some actual tutorials on its use.

Download link for Vault Pup is set up on the first post. It is Highly recommended that if you intend to use this that you use a usb install to properly secure your .wallet files. Tutorials will be coming soon. Vault Pup has the graphical grub installer included in place of Puppy's stock grub installer and it is recommended to do a manual grub install to usb. All needed extra files for the usb install are included on the cd (menu(usb).lst and stage2).
PS: sorry it took so long ally I had to resort to my fallback servers as Smokey01's servers aren't letting me upload for some reason.

I tried the vault iso and booted from it. When I coped files to another usb stick and did the grub setup command, it said it couldn't find the stage1 file. However, it could boot from the usb stick. However, when I closed it down and it created a saved file, the next time it was booting up it got stuck during boot. Any ideas?

Yes I left all the regular boot files for a DVD/CD as well as the needed files for a USB install inside the ISO. I don't know if the custom save options will work with a DVD install though as I've only used it with a usb stick.

dividebyzero Sorry I skipped over your post by accident. I've never had a problem just using the stage two file for usb boots I don't know why it's giving you this error as i've never encountered it. If for some reason you do need it it can be found at this thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=27471 inside of the pet file of the grub-gfxboot-ext4-and-inode256-compatible.tar.gz download. That has all of the stages inside of the pet that you can extract and add them inside of the folder with the stage 2 file.

turf sorry but i've been gone for a while. No it is not made to "Mine" bitcoins only to store them in a safe offline environment using the Armory program.

Can you add support for Litecoins?
I don't have BTC or LTC, but I am curious on it.

Armory currently has no support for LTC and there is no truly secure offline LTC programs that I would trust to use for Linux.
