Also came across a idea to place autocomplete 'speech' buttons on the far left of the keyboard Left of the (F1,ESC,TAB...) so that after a key press the next logical group of 6 auto completes would serve as the row selectors.

[SAY ] [F1][F2]....
[AUTOCOMP1] [ESC][1][2][3]...
[AUTOCOMP2] [TAB][Q][W][E]..
[AUTOCOMP3] [CRL][A][S][D]...
[AUTOCOMP4] [SHIFT][Z]..

As to not waste too much time row select would start on the extreme right of the Autocomplete button when switching to column mode. That would also keep the cursor movement at a known starting area and the keyboard from wiggling about.

Also If the Say Button is pressed the top 5 used speech (autocomplete or user chosen to be there) would be available if first time into the keyboard after switching from radar

Hi Russoodle, yes I am very keen to use the account please - there are two reasons I haven't used it yet:

1) I only wanted to upload versions I was really happy with, and although switchpup009 is very close to what I want to release it still has a sensitivity to any pupdesk.flg file left on disk.(I have sent a PM to BK asking the best way to "immunise" switchpup against finding the pupdesk.flg and dropping into xorgwizard unnecessarily but he has not replied yet). I really want to get to version 1.0 before I "officialise" it by putting it on your server.
2) It's actually a long time since I FTP'ed  The last time I did it I was using FileZilla on a windows box so I need to find out how puppy does it. Unfortunately a family member had a serious medical crisis this week and any serious thinking fell by the wayside. I hope to be uploading in the near future. (many thanks for the space!)

BTW - love the "pawsword" spelling :)

Hi Ted Dog, were you able to get any other puppy booted successfully on the Dells? (I have not had much success with Wary and Oneswitch - I had issues with the radar screen falling behind other windows so did not pursue it any further)

I had my laptop with switchpup booting via USB flashdrive, but the DR was wanting to see MouseCam (my laptop did not have internet) and I had burned a few copies of both to DVD's to handout.

I see there are several solutions available, but i hope for a hint on what is the best puppy solution and also if there are other Linux distroes that will be good for a joystick user.

Updated first post on page 1 to include a new version of Radar_firstrun that is based on Pemasu's "Upup_Raring_3.9.9.2" which seems to be very stable on my hardware.

Ted Dog - I am very keen to hear if this version improves booting on any of your machines...
(You were after a non-Precise version so this is an alternative to try. I will try basing other versions on other puppies later)

Thanks for changing the base, the md5 is missing from your post.
This is what mine ended up as:

Code: Select all

Thanks Ted Dog, I do get the same md5 and have now updated the first post accordingly.

Keen to hear if the Upup Raring version behaves any better on your hardware as I don't want to add any extra features till I know I have a suitable base...

cheers.

Yeah, me too, lol, I've been up playing with the alpha release of ARM puppy (fatdog) since that is the final puzzle into getting this effort into the least costly device possible, which brings up a point on who else would be developing this into ARM hardware. Was looking into OLPC project to provide hardware, would you be interested in enrolling into this project, there already is an active puppylinux group (which I never knew existed until last night, like a super secret club where the uber cool coders hangout) that port puppylinux into OLPC hardware.
But a last, like middle school cool kids, I got directed to start a different project rather than riding on this groups coat tails. :x

I've seen mavrothals work on the olpc project but ive not seen any of those devices in NZ. Is that primarily a south american device?

Once Ive got switchpup working to a satisfactory level I thought it would be neat to get it going on a raspberry pi or A10/A20 or similar. The more portable it is the better...

As far as I know there is a very active testing group in Auckland, New Zealand that has XO-4s and olpc-Australia has 5000-some of these.

Yes portability is a key, a few parts of OLPC setup would be ideal, one is the visibility of the screen outdoors, battery replacement, and thief determent, one based on looks and another is lack of usability if reported stolen, hardware is locked out, and resale options nearly zero. It scared me thinking we get this working on a iPad or Kindle fire due to the better outside visibility would be inviting an easy target for thieves.

Raspberry pi functionality for price looks low, the blackbone from TI looks like a stronger unit for same price point, and includes a key matrix support in hardware, eliminating the need for a gutted usb keyboard as a controller, but still need to display, having a hard time finding a smallest HDMI TV that would be need to make it portable.

Hi Ted Dog,

What about a (battery powered) HDMI pico projector?

Funny you should be thinking the same way I do, there must be a post some where describing my adventure with a wheelchair battery the low cost mele 1000 ARM and a like DLP device that runs nicely and many hours from such a setup. I used a high capacity rechargeable iPhone charger to power my mele1000 during long compiles or important work, it can go a dozen hours before shuting itself off to keep from harming the battery. But the same device can also power the DLP device at 12v for about 10 minutes.

#78 Post by mikeslr »

Hi all,

just wanted to bring to your attention that Billtoo has made available a pet of Ratpoison which enables windows to be managed entirely via keyboard entries.

Thanks Mike, I have been looking at ratpoison and also DWM as possibilities for my voxpup project.:

I think the tiling functionality might suit these purposes quite well.
