Character Map

#221 Post by tazoc »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_Map
Character Map is a utility included with Microsoft Windows operating systems and is used to view the characters in any installed font, to check what keyboard input (Alt code) is used to enter those characters, and to copy characters to the clipboard in lieu of typing them. The tool is usually useful for entering special characters. It can be opened via the command line or Run Command dialog using the 'charmap' command.
I don't see it in The GIMP. It is available in Lighthouse if the KDE SFS is loaded at menu -> Utility -> KCharSelect. If KDE SFS is not loaded, the GNOME Character Map can be installed with PPM. Search in PPM for 'gucharmap'.

I found and loaded 'gucharmap' via PPM.

It's in menu -> Utility -> Character Map.

PROBLEM: When I try to drag the copyright symbol from the Character Map to a GIMP layer I get an error
Opening '\u00a9' failed:

Unknown file type

Hello edoc

When in GIMP's 'Text Tool' try the following:

Hold down the Ctrl+Shift keys and type the letter u
now release the Ctrl+Shift keys and type your unicode hex (00a9)
and then press the enter key.

Here is a list of unicode hex characters

Hope this helps

Thanks CatDude! I had looked at a YouTube which said key sequences and hex codes didn't work any more ... bad intel.

I was successful at that stage ... here are the steps I am using to create a simple watermark copyright:

1. Open GIMP

2. Create a blank transparent page 1600 x 1200 125 x 125 px

3. Click on the Text icon on the left side toolbar window then type my name.

4. Click on the Text icon again, position the cursor next to my name, then hold Ctrl & Shift with one hand while typing "u" with the other.

5. Release Ctrl & Shift then type 00a9 then hit Enter.

6. Click the text icon again, position below my name & copyright symbol, and type my URL.

7. In the right toolbar window right-click on any of the three Text layers just created then scroll down to Merge Visible Layers & click.

8. Go to the top toolbar & select Image then scroll down & click on Autocrop Image.

9. Back to the top toolbar choose File -> Save As, name it e.g. "copyright-watermark1.xcf", then save somewhere.

10. Back to the top toolbar choose File -> Export, then on the file type pop-up (located just above Save) choose GBR (GIMP Brush), change the Spacing to 25, then save to: /usr/local/gimp/2.0/brushes

11. ????

I am stuck at this point.

The copyright watermark looks like a checkerboard with hard to read text.

I don't know if I need to do something to remove the checkerboard background or if that's supposed to look like that.

I don't know how to impose this on a picture.

Thanks!

Are you sure about that path :?:
as it does not exist here.

Try putting your brush in /root/.gimp-2.8/brushes
then fire up GIMP and see if it is in the Brushes.

It's meant to look like that.

Select the Paintbrush Tool,
then use your brush to paint on your image.

Or you could paint it onto a transparent layer (above your main image),
which would allow you to adjust the opacity.

I just tried that but don't see where I can view saved Brushes (which is a very confusing term for this in the first place).

Lost of LAN when laptop awakens after an overnight sleep

#228 Post by gcmartin »

I had posted earlier of the lost of LAN navigation when the laptop has been asleep, then awakened when the cover opens next morning. I have the ethernet LAN operating over the LAN cable when this occurs.

When the problem is seen, I have using the tray icon to disconnect, then re-acquire the IP. Specifically, the Ethernet interface is active, and the laptop can DHCP for a local address, but, upon re-acquiring the LAN IP, it still will NOT navigate the LAN or the internet. (an example of LAN navigation is the Ping command). IT CANT ROUTE the local LAN after acquiring the IP from the DHCP server!

Additional Questions
  1. Anyone using LH64 on their laptop? If so, anyone else close its covers at night, then open it the next morning?
  2. Any ideas on the problem or any ideas of support information which can shine the light on the problem?
If you have a laptop which has hibernated with LH602 and the problem has NOT occurred please indicate that, as well.

Thanks for any insights.

I could try it here but am guessing every laptop is unique ...

I never leave a laptop powered on when not in use - too many potential hazards:

Power surge, lightning, or static damage

Trojan/virus activity (surely they can write one that fakes hibernation then powers-up and runs).

Component stress if sleep mode isn't deep enough & the environment is marginal.

I like the theoretical value of cleared buffers and caps from a long power-down.

QUESTION: Why not just power-off overnight?

1. I've made a multi-session DVD+RW of "Lighthouse64-6.02-B2.iso"...
Typing this from it.

2. Having problems saving, as follows:
When I click the "Save..." icon on the desktop...
I get a warning window offering 2 choices [of which I have little understanding of either choice.
I normally choose the left button...
To write to a new/blank DVD.
a. Once, it then didn't write anything, but instantly aborted.
b. Usually it DOES write to the blank DVD+RW, and that [2nd] disk will then boot successfully.
But without the latest save methinks.
c. The 1st disk is nowhere near full [5% occupied?]
So how come the failure to write to the 1st disk?
Why the warning, and the demand for a new disk?

3. I wanted to install WINE [it's essential to my needs].
I use it to run my Windows exe of "Acerose Password Vault", that I've used for YEARS, and holds ALL of my URL's, usernames, passwords, securityinfo, etc.
Including my online banking info; I'll probably want to use this disk [with this particular Lighthouse version] as an online banking disk.
When using for normal/general use...
I want to be able to use Lighthouse with autosaving disabled, and you said to me that the ability to disable this [and have it persist from session to session indefinitely] will be included in the next release.
Until then, I can natively get that feature [the ability to choose at least] by using this version on a multi-session optical disk.
No extra work needed = NICE! :D

a. So I could only find an SFS version of WINE HERE.
Tried it as an SFS loaded at startup, and that worked, but I had to configure it for use EVERY TIME!
Too much work!
So...

b. I used Sfs Grabber to install it.
I believe that's when the "Save..." problems began. :(

4. Any idea what's going wrong?
Any fix?

Thanks for this Puppy.
Works great for me on my Asus laptop F201E
Boot on USB key and save on "data partition" of windows 8 :D

I just regret the absence of cairo-dock that I like. (if someone get news about that..).

Now that I know where to look (right side tool window among the smudges) it's a horizontal collection of blurry dots ... unless I mouse-over and see the pop-up detail there is no intuitive way to know what it is.

Also, to move the "brush" from dead center to another location on the picture requires the left side toolbar, then notice the small print instructions that vaguely implies that one must hold the Shift key then use the mouse to move it.

Anyhow, this is what my poorly-made copyright watermark looks like when imposed on a picture:

http://nevils-station.com/images/misc1/ ... pw-sm1.jpg

I have to walk through the process again so that it's a watermark vs black letters, to get the "(c)" aligned with my name, and to get the URL closer to my name - perhaps with a line between them.

It's a start & I sure appreciate the heads-up to get past some of the non-intuiitive GIMP methodology.

QUESTION: Why not just power-off overnight?
Dont forget if a person has automount turned on, there are trojans that work just by simply being plugged in. I dont recall any off the top of my head for linux, but its therotically possible.
While that possibility is limited, Id focus more on shortening the life of the onboard Power Caps. Sitting charged for hours and hours on end without use will over time cuase them to fail prematurely.

As to why, I think gc is a live media user, so the boot time is probably the reason he chooses to hibernate into ram instead of having to boot from the DVD every morning. DVD load times are annoyingly slow.
I could be wrong though, only he knows his reasons.

@Sylvander, I have only used LIve media, just as you are doing. with constant success over the years with Lighthouse.

Here's a brief explanation that may help you.

I have alway "started" with the Mariner ISO. Reason: It comprises the base and contains may useful subsystems that I can select at boot-time. Wine is in there! with little need for you to do anything. And, of those subsystems (SFSs) I get to pick and choose those which will match my system needs.

Next, in all cases, I have used the Shutdown/Reboot approach for saving sessions to the LIve media (the DVD). Works without failure. But, I can see why you would need to save-session, during the running of your Lighthouse. So, I have NOT experienced that failure you describe.

Questions
Do you have a save-file on HDD/USB that might be interfering with system decision on where to place the save? Or is this the very first time you are doing a save after booting, say, from pfix=ram?

Hope this helps

@gcmartin
1. "I have alway "started" with the Mariner ISO"
Seems I should do that also. :D

2. "in all cases, I have used the Shutdown/Reboot approach for saving sessions to the LIve media (the DVD)"
I did that too, but got the same bad result as when using the "Save..." icon on the desktop. :(

3. "Do you have a save-file on HDD/USB that might be interfering with system decision on where to place the save?"
No.
No save file or SFS file or any other file for any version of Lighthouse.
Neither on the internal HDD nor any connected USB drive.

4. "is this the very first time you are doing a save after booting, say, from pfix=ram?"
a. The 1st time I ran the DVD+RW->Lighthouse, at the menu, I chose the menu option for multi-session 1st time run.
Then...
b. Second and subsequent runs, I chose the option that provided multi-session-support.
I think the 2nd shutdown was OK.
It was the 3rd shutdown where the save failed.

What you share is same as what I do. I just looked and I have only rebooted twice on this system (there are only 2 "dated" save-session files on the media). I will clean up and shutdown to reboot.

Let you know results when I reboot system.

Memory Leak?

#238 Post by edoc »

I have observed the Personal Storage space in my HP Pavilion g7 laptop disappearing to red.

Even if I close everything and wait the memory remains unavailable - only a reboot restores it to green.

Here's what was open just now when this happened and made me blue: ;-)

Firefox with multiple windows.

Seamonkey with multiple windows and email.

LibreOffice with two documents (one contained several pictures of various sizes between 100 and 500k).

Two ROX-filer windows with thumbnails activated and in large icon mode.

Right click on the freespace icon in the task manager bar. Choose "map of storage used"
take a look at the directories that show the most crap in them. Each Block is a file which are grouped by directory.
Then manually go into those directories to delete them or if its cache space, clear the cache in a browser.

Thanks for the reminder that it's there & how it works - I looked at it once and it seemed too much like expressionistic-art to me ... ;-)

Anyhow, why would there be a bazillion .png files in root/.thumbnails/normal/ after I have just rebooted?

Why would ATI-13.4-HD567-k3.8.7-L64-1.pet be in root/.cache/lhp-update/ ?

And the other biggie: root/.cache/lhp-update/OpenJRE-7.40-IcedTea-x86_64-2.pet

Everything else is relatively small.

WDYT?
