How to install Ntop and dependencies?

#1 Post by wirwav »

Has anyone figured out how to install Ntop using Linux Puppy.

Is there a Pet?

Where to get all the dependancies?

Thanks

Thanks, looks useful... But, I am a Linux user for just a few days now and since my machine has only 4GB or SSD and limited to Puppy only, I am totally lost as to how to get those Debian listed dependancies onto Puppy.

Sorry, any more help with that!!

Hi

I installed lupu_528.sfs

I dont see it at all under package manager.

What ver do you have?

I tried to use NtopXtra and run it under wine, OpenXtra commander just says that the Ntop service is Not installed.

Here in "Precise-5.6.1"...
I opened the "Puppy Package Manager" [PPM]...
Searched for ntop...
"ntop_4.1.0+dfsg1-1" = "display network usage in web browser" was found...
Clicked it and a dialog window opened that allowed me to "examine dependencies".
See screenshot below of the result of choosing to do that.
i.e. 8 dependencies [plus 2 in the 2nd tab not displayed].
I didn't bother to complete the install.

All you had to do was tick your repos'n update PPM.

Yes...
I had probably updated my Precise-5.6.1 PPM during some previous session.

Hi.

I tried to update package manager in 5.28, it updated, but Ntop was never found.

So now I am on 5.6.1 Precise.. Sure I searched for Ntop and found it, I checked all the dependancies (default) and sat back and waited.

It does not seem to load properly and there is no icon etc.

Shame, looked like it was almost there!

Think you missed the 'tick' bit..

@ any rate, type this into a console: which ntop

Then: ldd /path/from/above/output

No (L)ldd? Do this: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 --list /path/to/ntop

hi,

nop sorry..

I get a bash report that says No such file or directory

And again the Puppy package manager seems to be frozen 10 minutes now, just a white screen with Puppy Package manager at the top.

Did you go through to installing it?

Maybe there is something wrong with the installation packages.

Are you familiar with the program?

The NtopXtra works fine on my windows machine, but this is a little Dell FX170 with 4GB SSD and 2GB ram, I wanted to leave it running 24/7 !!

Also not sure if Ntop runs with SeaMonkey as a browser.

Maybe thats the problem?

ok I didnt spot this "No (L)ldd? Do this: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 --list /path/to/ntop"

Finally the blank window closed.

I have done the above and I get,

--list/path/to/ntop: error while loading shared libraries: --list/path/to/ntop:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Case and spacing- both critical. While not perfect- +intristin..

For you, try again: /lib/ld-linux.so.2 --list /usr/sbin/ntop

I just now tried to complete the installation of ntop, but PPM froze, with no sign of ntop having been successfully installed.

Also got this:

Code: Select all

# /lib/ld-linux.so.2 --list /usr/sbin/ntop
/usr/sbin/ntop: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/sbin/ntop: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
I'll reboot without saving the session changes, and make a 2nd attempt after the reboot.

First get it running, then open with your Java enabled browser >> http://localhost:3000/

yes, its really unclear whether it has loaded properly or not.

I did a second search for Ntop and installed, what it said were now just 2 missing dependancies.

It seemed to download them, but my Package manager page seems to hang, just a white box.

So I tried to run Ntop from the consul...Looks like taht may have been a bad idea since it needs an admin password at startup (linux only).

By the way, I did your last consul line and got a page list of library stuff.. Too much to write down as a reply.. ( I am not replying to you using the same machine)

Now I am studying various web links to the same startup issue.

https://svn.ntop.org/svn/ntop/trunk/nto ... 1STRUN.txt

However I am not convinced that it has installed correctly and I was truly expecting some kind of icon to be dumped on my desktop..

Maybe its just my first bad experience and I have little idea what to expect really.

My 2nd & 3rd install attempts both failed.

At 3rd attempt I tried 1st installing:
ntop-data_4.1.0+dfsg1-1
Then when I began installing:
ntop_4.1.0+dfsg1-1
There was no extra tab displaying the 2 extra dependencies [they had been installed?]

But the PPM window still froze at about the point where it would be downloading/installing the last or 2nd-last dependency.

Also...
My shutdown process wouldn't complete properly.
i.e. At the point [during shutdown] where I choose to NOT save any session changes...
Nothing happened...
And I was forced to power off improperly, and at next boot enter the command:
puppy pfix=fsck

I'll try using a different repo for download.
The 2 separate depends downloaded OK.
Of the second group...
The 1st six downloaded OK, but the seventh download failed to start.
PPM is now frozen.
Will now attempt to reboot without saving.

Several things @ play here.. you're a novice, Precise me thinks is still teething and ntop's multi-user. Bad, bad combo.

Besides all the above making for a bad combo, ntop required additional directories. I'll look closer as time permits..

Well I certainly would appreciate some help with this one.

I was hoping to use Ntop 24hours a day to monitor my network traffic on my gateway interface. ( I am a wisp)

Also I did manage to get The Dude running under a WINE setting on the same machine.

So as soon as I can get Ntop functioning on this tiny Linux machine, I will be a happy bunny.

Did it look like your install completed ok? is it normal to get an icon on the desktop?
