I did a manual frugal install of Precise 564 alpha to a 4gb flash drive.
Computer is a 9+ year old Compaq Presario S6700NX.

Version 1.3 Mesa 8.0.4
Direct Rendering Yes
Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter [rt73]
I needed to update ppm before I could download Vlc-2.0.5
Also added Firefox-22 from ppm
There is a modem in this pc but don't have time to check it now.
No problems yet.
EDIT:I installed Seamonkey 2.17.1 with ppm and the latest flashplayer plugin with getflash.
It's working great, videos at cnn play well at fullscreen.
EDIT:Hardinfo shows that the modem in this pc is a:
Communication controller LSI Corporation LT WinModem (rev 02)
I set up pupdial and entered a password and username for the local internet provider, it dialed out and connected but the username and password weren't valid so it hung up, does work though.

alpha software definition
A very early version of a software product that may not contain all of the features that are
planned for the final version. Typically, software goes through two stages of testing before it is
considered finished.
Alpha version describes a development status that usually means the first complete version of
a program or application, which is most likely unstable, but is useful to show what the product
will do to, usually, a selected group—and is also called preview version; the beta version is
usually the last version before wide release, often tested by users under real-world conditions. |
Guess the entire Linux world is in trouble. From Distrowatch:(Emphasis mine.)

Summary of expected upcoming releases
2013-07-11: openSUSE 13.1 Milestone 3
2013-07-25: Ubuntu 13.10 Alpha 2 (for opt-in flavours)
2013-07-25: OS4 14.1 (see roadmap)
2013-07-29: Frugalware Linux 1.9rc1
2013-08-01: Ubuntu 13.10 Alpha 3 (for opt-in flavours)
2013-08-08: openSUSE 13.1 Milestone 4
2013-08-12: Frugalware Linux 1.9rc2
2013-08-15: Ubuntu 12.04.3 (see release schedule)
2013-08-26: Frugalware 1.9 (see roadmap)
2013-09-05: Ubuntu 13.10 Beta 1 (for opt-in flavours)
What is your difficulty in understanding that there are alpha, beta and release candidate releases before any final release? Developers have been using the term "alpha" long before you chose to name your distro.

QTWeb |

If anyone trying QTWeb is bothered by tiny fonts in the menus, do a search for pemasu's qt-font-fix.pet, which deals with this.

If QtWeb pops up ssl certificate errors from time to time, installing ssl certificates and needed folders will stop them. Here is pet to enable installing them. You need /etc/ca-certificates.conf file. Only this file is included in the pet.
Install the pet.
PPM > ca-certificates-some-date.deb
In console: update-ca-certificates
Done.

Puppy never used alpha, beta and release candidate release scheme in the past |
Totally and utterly wrong once again.Do you really not have a clue or do you just like to create controversy?
See the link in pemasu's post.
Figured you might have learned from the Archpup fiasco....but evidently not.

I checked this pet:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_packages-precise/openbox_with_extras-005-english.pet
It has included this file:
/etc/xdg/menus/puppy-multimedia.menu
That file does not have the new multimedia submenu entries. It will cause that openbox does not show for example: Asunder, Gnome-Mplayer, Mhwaveedit, Pdvdrsap.
I think fix and reupload is recommended.
