Testing version for woof-CE and a possible near future slacko

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=738882#738882

---------------------------------------------------------

Slacko 5.6 is released.

To get it see the downloads page. At time of writing only UOC hasn't fully rsynced yet.

More info at the home page.

Bug thread

Deltas from RC (iso only)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OLD RC stuffs

Here's Slacko-5.5.90 and 91

ISO downloads and devx plus deltas. If you are confused by kernel header situation look at README_DEVX.TXT. In a frugal install you will not need to do anything.

Question Q. Why are the deltas so big ??? (~17M)

Arrow A. The 3.4.52 version includes an mplayer binary that is compiled differently for slower machines. The 3.10.5 version includes kernel headers for 3.10.5.

The kernel sources are up at the main repo and should be downloadable from the sfs_manager.

See below post for more on f2fs

devx only contains 3.4.52 headers but the headers for 3.10.5 being
in the main fs will be on a higher layer than the devx and will
get preference. If in doubt you can install kernel headers from
the pet at the repo manually.

Vision

see below for more on f2fs

OK, alpha has been out some days now and the bugs are turning up. On to that.

The immediate plan is to compile 3.4.52 with devtmpfs and f2fs support (update: that worked Smile ). I'll add my f2fs usb stick program, and also write up a FULL install to f2fs-usb program. This will take full advantage of f2fs usage of nand storage. After all, whacking an ext filesystem in a save file on top of f2fs probably nullifies any advantage gained by using f2fs. For a FRUGAL type situation, we need to develop f2fs SAVE files. That's down the track. The big advantage of this will be that writes will not have to be restricted so USB installs so using AUFS will act like pupmode=12 installs (on a fast hard drive).

So why the trouble? I believe puppy's niche is USB installs. I use them extensively. Currently, the system of caching everything in RAM until a set interval (default 30 minutes) and saving back to the save file has it's limitations.
  • The 'snapmerge' (as it is known) can take up to several minutes and the system cops a substantial performance penalty.
  • Using FAT filesystems (and NTFS for that matter) is not Linux friendly as those FS do not respect UNIX permissions
  • RAM can fill up in that 30 minute period and cause RAM crash, then everything in that period is lost. Sure, that could be monitored but the systems that suffer these problems (old ones) then cop another performance penalty by adding another daemon.
This configuration is known as "pupmode=13". I don't particularly like it and I think kirk and jamesbond dumped that method in FatDog (confirmation of that please?).

***************************

I will stick with k3.10 series for the high end (PAE) version. I will wait until 3.10.1 before compiling. With the newer kernels though and an older lib base (slackware-14.0's base is approaching 12 months old, that is ancient in Linux Years) we run the risk of poor driver support in the graphics stack. A few kernel devs are also Xorg devs (Alan Cox comes to mind) so the kernel and Xorg are undergoing some parallel developments.

So there you have it, my rough plan.

Mick

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

f2fs - 14 July 2013

The current BETA now sports an additional f2fs installer integrated into the original. Users of PHATSlacko and Thin Slacko may be familiar with that version.

The additional installer installs a FULL install to USB nand devices such as USB sticks and SD cards. I have tested several and they all work on various hardware. One trouble I did have though is with a slow old USB-1.1 stick on a machine with a USB-1.1 BUS; boot stalled as soon as it got to desktop, however on the same machine with a faster stick it booted and ran just fine. So far I have tested 5 machines with 5 different devices (one an SD card, using it now).

There may be a problem though if your machine boots from an SD card but it's on it's own BUS. I'm not sure if I have the correct kernel modules in the initrd, so if it fails for you we can likely fix that issue. Same goes for internal SSD drives, just need to know the correct kernel module(s).

Access the installer from the Menu >> Setup >> F2FS Installer - Flash Drives. Run it; it offers to start GParted. Make a small 32 MB FAT32 boot partition and the rest of the device f2fs, make sure you mark the FAT partition's boot flag. A window then offers a choice of FRUGAL or FULL. Choose FULL. A yellow terminal opens with instructions and walks you through the installation.

NOTE: it will only work from a live CD/DVD boot or frugal installation to hard drive.

As usual NO WARRANTY; back up before hand; well you always do that anyway, don't you?

I think for the non PAE 3.4.XX will be the right choice. Especially since they seem to have broken nouveau in recent kernels.

Dave,

You at the coffee shop yet? Laughing

Aarf reported a DNS resolution error on BK's blog, I saw it too, but it resolved itself in a matter of minutes, may have been a minor glitch. Anyway, the direct path is http://01micko.com/slackotest/slacko-5.5.67/
That will work just as well.

Sounds good. The problem suddenly appeared about k-3.5.x ...... would need to check my notes. Was just running a k-3.4.48 (PCLOS) earlier....no nouveau problems.

Frugal install to USB. EVERYTHING working. Acer Aspire i5 with 6gb ram. Click pad not recognised as such of course.
Setting up CLICKPAD was difficult in 5.5 and took much experimenting. Finally found the configuration below to work, also in this alpha. The right button area had to be configured very tiny and tapping had to be disabled. It is problematic in that when CLICKPAD is not recognised at boot, no right click option is available. A temporary fix is to assign right click to a two finger tap.

Hi Mick

Testing a pristine, frugal install of 5.6alpha on my HP550 laptop.

Boots OK - savefile OK - reboot OK.

3 problems to report so far:

1. Broadcom B43 wifi is not working - says my wifi is disabled: see below

2. Directory naming problems when compiling /lib/modules/3.10 and 3.10.0

when 2 is fixed by moving files

3. Unable to compile Broadcom wl wifi driver under kernel 3.10

Cheers
PeeBee
