Upup Raring 3.9.8.1 with kernel 3.9.8 non-PAE

#1 Post by pemasu »

Upup Raring 3.9.8.1 has been uploaded. It has non-PAE 3.9.8 kernel. Couple of new drivers for hardware has been enabled.

First. Thank you of the feedback when I uploaded the first 3.9.8 version. Several fixes were implemented from that feedback. Community effort comes true. Thank you all !

Latest woof of the time has been used.

Several applications has been updated: Gnome-mplayer, Pmusic, Pburn, gtkdialog, Jwm, Transmission, epdfview replaced with Evince.

PupControl, PupSysinfo and PupSnap has been updated. New Pup-Kwiev for kernel module info viewing has been included. Thanks Radky.

Deadbeef and Powertop has been added and several under the hood improvements to create better user experience. Deadbeef has been coupled with multimedia buttons and ctrl+alt+delete with Lxtask. Rox right click > window > terminal here > Lxterminal. I need Lxterminal when I compile kernel. Urxvt does not handle ncurses terminal resizing.

Ppower tray app > right click it > Hardware control > Powertop and laptop - netbook user can see watt consumption and there is also small tuning abilities included to reduce watt consumption a little. All the tray apps has right click menu for other properties. Check them.

Abiword plugins has been included.

I havent used eudev - kmod combo. I still use udev-167 and module-init-tools.

Lib*mm files have been removed and static gparted is in use instead.

Pemasu has graciously included the new PupControl-2.4 in Upup Raring 3.9.8.1.

The current PupControl-2.4 available on the forum is correct, but there is a bug in the version sent to Pemasu. Specifically, the fonts appear much too large in the Pup-SysInfo and Pup-Kview modules.

The fix is simple:

1 - Download PupSysInfo-Fix-UpupRaring-3.9.8.1.gz
2 - Remove the gz extension (not really a gz file)
3 - Click on PupSysInfo-Fix-UpupRaring-3.9.8.1
4 - This modifies the Pup-SysInfo and Pup-Kview files.

Note: this fix is only for Upup Raring 3.9.8.1

Thanks

One hundred eighty six megabytes?!
What have you stuffed into it?
Raring is getting fatter by the day.
That's summertime for you. That's what sun rays will do to Nordic devs.

remove builtin+remaster=better than downloading extras from net.(wish ati/nvidia video drivers were inside) Most people don't even nead the builtin pets. Is it(will be) possible to batch remove builtin packages (would be nice if were like in routers with web-interface, luci for example on openwrt firmwares)?
devx & kernel src cannot be reached from Quickpet yet. Any chances Qmmp will get to audio tab?
All the rest is cool as always. Thanks.

PS: is there a good tutorial on seamonkey tuning (mime-types) on forum?

I have uploaded nvidia-glx-319.23-k3.9.8 pet and sfs to the pet_packages-raring folder.

http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/pet_packages-raring/

I dont have pet_packages-raring repo in PPM and probably there wont be. It will prohibit that I wont pollute the server with loads of pets which consume the server space.

I need to be wary how much stuff I upload to the hosted server. I use it with gratitude and the hosting capablities are granted by smokey01. We all know how important it is to have these facilities and to not overtax the services we have in use.

I want to express my thanks to smokey01 for his hosting services to the Puppy linux community.

Upup Raring 3.9.8.1 with kernel 3.9.8 non-PAE

#13 Post by Billtoo »

I remastered my 3981 install and did a frugal install of the
remastered iso to an 8gb SDHC card which is running on my Acer laptop.

I tried installing the ati 13.4 modern pet that you provided but it
wouldn't get to the desktop, just get a black screen.

Started with a new savefile:

I downloaded and compiled the 13.6 beta driver, I loaded the kernel
source sfs and devx with sfs load on the fly and then exited to the
prompt and compiled the
amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13-6-beta-x86.x86_64.run file, then did
aticonfig --initial and rebooted creating my savefile.
It is working, it shows an alert thing about an inch square in the
lower right corner of the screen which is always there but doesn't
show up on a screenshot, it says "AMD testing use only".

EDIT: I just repeated what I did above with a new savefile and the amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13-4-x86.x86_64.run file and it's working fine.

Runs well on my eeepc.
Did a quick compile of a few items, as you will see in the attached image. Devx works well, now I have a crisp new self-compiled Geany of the latest version. Removed Seamonkey and installed Firefox. Both are fast. I wish pemasu could have made it a little bit smaller in size, with less pre-installed apps, and more choice given to the user. Maybe that will happen in the future.

Anikin. Yeah. I am not famous of creating barebones Puppies. You should check my Snow Puppy size from what I started. Or Polarpup. I have gone to the smaller additions. It is all the raring stuff, included Python, included dri drivers, libflashplayer etc which really makes Raring series big. If I dont include them....there are people who complain.

Anyway....this has been my summer experiment. I did include in purpose more stuff than I have recently done.

Apologies of that.

Oh...I have uploaded the catalyst 13.4 modern pet. What that modern even means. There are already other newer catalyst drivers, like the one for HD7xxx series and so on. I am not even sure if desktop graphics have other drivers also. I have always chosen laptop driver since I have laptop when I have checked those menus in the amd driver page.

Catalyst 13.6 also gives me black screen so they havent created yet newish catalyst for my dual graphics HD4XXX graphics. I will stick with 13.1.

Thanks for the tip, the 13.4 driver is working well on this laptop so I'll stick with that.

nvidia legacy driver support

#20 Post by dogbert0360 »

Tried out the latest Upup and am very impressed. I was wondering if there will be nvidia driver support for legacy cards (304.xx). I hope so as this will soldify my decession to install it on my computer.

Keep up the great work!
