The error:
Code:
# ** Message: Couldn't initialize gstreamer. Disabling live preview.

Ldd shows all libraries are available with no version problems.

Handbrake starts, reports the error, and the right edge of the GUI jumps back and forth.
# Maybe a GTK+ version problem?

I think that it would work ( with no live preview of course ), but the GUI display is screwy.

Hello sunburnt

I have just created an sfs file (for Slacko-5.5) containing the following packages
    gst-plugins-base-0.10.36-i486-2.txz
    gstreamer-0.10.36-i486-1.txz
    HandBrake-0.9.8-i686-1gv.txz
    libvisual-0.4.0-i486-3.txz
    udev-182-i486-5.txz

and i have the exact same error message as yourself, plus the 'screwy GUI' Laughing ,
only in my case it is not just the righthand side but the titlebar as well that is flickering madly.
Even worse was the fact i could not move the window (either by clicking on the titlebar or using Alt-click)

Well, i don't have an answer/fix for the error message, but i did find a solution to the 'screwy GUI'

What i found was, if i went to View and unticked Show Presets
everything was hunky dory. (ie: no more flickering, and i could move the window)

This got me to thinking it may be somehow connected to the gtk theme,
so i went to: Desktop > Chtheme GTK theme chooser
and reduced the font size from 12 to 11, and the 'screwy GUI' was history.

I'm not saying this will definitely work in your particular case,
but who knows, it might.

Hope this helps
CatDude

Hey CatDude; I`m a cat person too, but I still like Puppies!

# Did Handbrake work for you?

This is a perfect example of Linux oddities as I call them.
It`s baffling that ldd says it`s all there but the thing won`t work.
I`ve had good luck installing gstreamer at times, but then there`s this.

I`ve suggested before: SFS library packs for specific purposes.

Found a patch for Handbrake for this error, but it no help at all as I`m using binary files.
I`m using Precise and all the files downloaded were for Ubuntu Precise.
I can`t help but feel that something`s missing, but ldd says all lib. deps. are there and good.
