Happy to see new Carolina

#801 Post by mikeslr »

Hi All,

Trying to overcome the problems posed on http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=84617 has occupied my free time so it's been a while since I looked in on this thread. I'm pleased to see continued development and the publication of a new release candidate. After considering all other Pups then available, I remastered the then current 'lina-lite 5 to send to my niece. So I really do appreciate the efforts which have gone into developing a very versatile OS.
I've just downloaded and unpacked 7rc4. So I don't have anything to report or complain about, except the following: The thread is now on page 54. I left off about 3 months ago. Finding where discussion pertaining to 7rc began took about 10 minutes. If Geoffrey or rg66 can remember, it would be helpful --and especially less taunting to those new to the thread-- that when a new rc or final version is announced on the thread's first post, a link there to the post where discussions regarding it will be found could be included.
Other than that, keep up the good work.

Carolina .7rc4

#802 Post by tlcstat »

Greetings,
Well, I've been trying to get a puppy os working to my liking for five years now and I think this release is a winner. The show stopper with most has been bluetooth. I had to do a bit of tweaking to get it working this time also but its a real winner. All of my preferred software is doing fine also. If anyone knows where I can get a GPHPEdit.pet I would appreciate the info. Kompozer is working fine.

I have a card reader in the front of my computer where I keep my "save" file and then run the Carolina os from the hard drive. That way I can switch hard drives and with the second drive also having a Carolina boot dir they can both access and save to the same file on the mem card. works really well. I run Ubuntu Raring on my main drive but to tell you the truth I really am liking this Carolina os as my main boot.

I have uploaded a delta file for testing the broadcom wl module, it can be downloaded here http://smokey01.com/carolina/rg66/lina- ... .iso.delta

This is for pae only

The non-pae delta should come if and when some issues are sorted out.

delta md5 b632393185b84cb993af3590b491faf7
iso md5 c6612239a3cff3c1da43a62cdb0dfbe5

Feedback would be appreciated, and for older broadcom wireless as well just to make sure it still works.

Thanks to irishrm for testing the pets.

Forward thinking ideas in this.

Tested RC4-PAE on every PC I have access to, today. It just works! This has been tested in Live media disc use. No boot-time or display problems.

Full-featured. Great structure. Wonderful with no issues to report at this time.

And, I can see the thoughts you have given with offering both an ISO and a delta which can be used with the prior release in version. This gives us a choice of which is most appropriate for our download need.

Thanks for what you guys have done for us with this effort

Uploaded a delta file to create a non-pae lina-007rc4wl-non-pae.iso, this is for testing to check whether the "wl" wireless driver works, I have no such device to test with, please report any problems.

Has anyone tried rc4wl pae and non-pae? We would really like some feedback on the broadcom drivers before we release rc5.

If Precise doesn't support it I doubt Carolina will, you'll probably have to compile the drivers like you did for Precise. Sorry

Broadband wl deltas seem OK

Downloaded the full iso's and the wl deltas - applied the deltas and tested pristine frugal installs of both pae and non-pae versions....

in both cases the wl.ko driver was selected and a wifi signal was established

just one thing to note: Frisbee is enabled in the non-pae version but is disabled in the pae version which is rather odd - they should both be the same I would think - and both enabled - otherwise it is quite difficult in the pae version to find how to setup a wifi connection as there is no tray icon to hover over or to right click.

Cheers

Thanks peebee, good to here they both worked. And thanks to you and rerwin for the pets.

It is strange about frisbee being disabled in pae. I don't recall having that issue but will check it out and make sure it's sorted for rc5.

If anyone else has this issue, frisbee is in control panel under network

Update: Tried rc4wl from usb on wired desktop, frisbee was enabled and recieved an ip

Tried on laptop, frisbee was enabled and after entering a password wireless was working.

Hi everybody ! :)
Carolina is great and I'm using it in a pc with a frugal install because it's wonderful !
I would have just a simple question: in the website of Carolina there are two good tutorials about installation of AMD/ATI and nVidia drivers.
Both recall the devx_lina_xxx.sfs but only the 005 and 006 seem available.
The current version is 007 and maybe one of the above mentioned could be used or maybe there will be a new release (or maybe I didn't find it..).
However, could anyone kindly tell me any info about?
Thanks !

inoxidabile,

Do as smokey01 said, the devx is the same in all versions, you can rename it to 007 if you wish.
I should of mentioned that earlier, there is no point in duplicating it for each version,
well not until if or when there is a change to the devx, nothing is currently planned to be done.

Unfortunately, it seems that the release of ATI driver I need (Radeon X1200) has some conflict with the kernel... the installation shows a message, more or less about this.
However, it isn't a problem, it was only to try an improvement, the behaviour is acceptable also without that driver (thanks to the great Carolina!)

Would you check the version of yaf-splash that Carolina uses??

I am having trouble with command lines that use the close never option

You need a newer version of yaf-splash to support this option

Code: Select all

yaf-splash -close never -text zzz
http://puppylinux.com/howto/yaf-splash-new.htm

-text EXPRESSION
-timeout COUNT (in seconds)
-icon GTK-XXX (for example: gtk-info all gtk-stock-symbols, default: none)
-bg COLOR (background color red, blue, yellow..., default: grey)
-fg COLOR (font color, default: black)
-placement center|mouse|top|bottom|top-left|bottom-left (default center)
-close never|mouseover|box (default is mouseover)
-deco TITLE (shows windows decorations, with title)
-fontsize SIZE (small, medium, large, x-large, default: large)

The yaf-splash links to gtkdialog-splash which is this version updated 13. Feb 2013 http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 564#626564

I get a permission denied go to /usr/bin/gtkdialog-splash right click > Make Executable,
that seem to fix things, now I know why the old mtpaint screenshooter timer didn't work,
some of the splashs must of been using the old yaf-splash, thanks don.

kingsoft office for carolina

#818 Post by pchan »

Hi,

I found a good office application called kingsoft office.

It has offered a ubuntu deb file for installation.

Is there a way to install this office software to use in carolina?

Thanks!

I've already tried that but there is no chance of it working

Geoffrey ,

Thanks for the reply.

It is a great pity. I tested the kingsoft slide presentation program and found it to be quite close to the microsoft powerpoint as compared to the freeoffice softmaker slide program.

Anyway, i am happy that the freeoffice softmaker works in carolina.

I hope that someday, the kingsoft office will also work in carolina because carolina seems to be really a very capable puppy linux os and can handle many things very well. It is also very fast and has many convenient features that helps someone like me who knows very little about the technical and programing side of pc.

Thanks!
