If you want something that play's just about everything, right click on the file and select " Open with Slimp Player " this is in 007rc3 and 007rc4.

Installed 007rc4.
Very nice-would like to give some time trying it out.

However failed to install BC-wl driver using Peebee-rerwin's packages.
Says kernel not supported.

Hopefully they might take a look.

Sounds like you installed the non-pae package. The one you need is broadcom_wl_delta-k3.2.13-ski.pet. Broadcom_wl_delta-k3.2.13-c.pet is for non-pae.

Geoffrey, very, very nice OS....

Thanks for your continued work on Carolina... and, of course, all the the support that you (and rg66) provide to us!!

Grub4Dos is not in the menu under System, but can be accessed in Control Panel... maybe that was by design.

Anyway, Keep up the fantastic work.

rg66:

Thanks for your help.

I failed to get the wl driver working in the pae iso.

So I ended up downloading and installing the non-pae iso and thanks to your explanation I got the wl driver installed and working.

Posting from it now and looking forward to exploring.

Grub4dos installation problem...

#767 Post by trhmusician »

I've been using this version of Puppy Linux and I absolutely love it. I've been telling my friends and family about it. My stepmom wanted to start using it, so I sent her Lina 007rc2 in the mail.

Everything installed right, until she got to Grub4dos, where she got an error message that read: somewhat error occurred. Then it tells her there is a problem with the grub4dosconfig.log file.

I'm pretty new to Linux, and am not sure what this means, except that she can't install her bootloader to start Linux.

Does anyone know what this might mean, and how to fix it, so she can start using this version? Thank you so much, and keep up the excellent work!

You didn't say if it was indeed the wrong driver that was the problem at first, installing both may have corrupted something. I don't have a Broadcom wireless card to test on, can you try pae again on a fresh savefile and see if it works using the correct files?
yr1945 wrote:Grub4Dos is not in the menu under System, but can be accessed in Control Panel... maybe that was by design.
Yes, some rarely used entries have been moved to Control Panel to clean up the System menu.
trmusician wrote:Everything installed right, until she got to Grub4dos, where she got an error message that read: somewhat error occurred. Then it tells her there is a problem with the grub4dosconfig.log file.
I reinstalled grub4dos and everything worked as it should. I could not find a grub4dosconfig.log file anywhere on my system. Can you find out exactly what the error message was?

I've had some problems with puppy universal installer before. Now I make a folder on sda1 named carolina as an example, and copy the iso/cd contents there. Then, I run grub4dos and it seems to find everything ok.

Geoffrey and I are trying to sort out this Broadcom wifi issue. The problem is, we don't have a card to test with. We are looking for people with Broadcom wifi cards that don't work in Carolina to test a few pets to see if it will work.

Please read this post carefully and install the pets in the proper order.

To install the Broadcom WL driver onto Carolina:

1. install rerwin_woof_fixes-delta-3f.pet

2. install the delta file

3. install the multi-kernel pet

4. reboot

For number 2.
Carolina uses the broadcom_wl_delta-k3.2.13-ski.pet
Carolina non-pae uses the broadcom_wl_delta-k3.2.13-c.pet

You must have or create a savefile for this.

Thanks to everyone who helps test this.

Very, very nice, guys, but...
- usual silly nonsense with Adobe Flash. Couldn't get any recent version to work, but 10.3.183.18 , for which a .pet already exists, worked just fine; overwrote the existing, no need to unload it. Haven't run Opera yet, but that usually works with series 10 Flash.
Seem to remember being promised HTML5 by last November!

Later: Opera - yes, works with series 10 Flash.

rg66 :

Sorry I should have given more detail.
I used the wrong package and corrupted the savefile in the process.

So I re installed the pae iso as you suggested and created a new savefile.
Re-installed the correct pet packages and rebooted.
Right clicked frisbee/setup networking and was connected straight away.

I now have both pae and non-pae up and running on usb installs.
The problem arose from my not understand which package went with which iso.

Congratulations to Geoffrey and yourself on a great project.
Its a bit like ubuntu but in my mind much better.

rc3 to rc4 update

#772 Post by Marv »

Hi rg,

non-PAE update on both the Pentium M class laptop with ipw2200 wireless and the core 2 duo with iwlwifi wireless went without a hitch. Might want to move x-con into the main sfs for the 'core' users. I modify the compression parameters in the 'convert to sfs' line and pick up roughly 10% size reduction in most sfs I've done (thanks simargl and alphaOS). The line I use for rightclick is just

Code: Select all

mksquashfs %f %f.sfs -comp xz -b 524288 -Xbcj x86

and alternately line 32 in dir2sfs (also used in x-con) would become

Code: Select all

[ $? = 0 ] && COMP="-comp xz -b 524288 -Xbcj   x86"
I haven't run dir2sfs with the mod but have been using the unmodded dir2sfs and the modded 'convert to sfs' side by side for some time now and haven't found any problems uncompressing on any machines I have access to.
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

It is in main, well it's supposted to be anyway. I'll check it out.

I'm glad you understood the script, it does my head in every time I look at it. I'll try it out with your mods tomorrow. Good to see you back in the lina thread!

Installation from CD

#774 Post by ezmuny3 »

Hello developers,
Carolina 007 (and all releases in its history and all those of Saluki) would not boot from CD on my desktop rig.
Configuration:
* mobo: Gigabyte P55-UD3L
* proc: i5
* vid: Radeon 5770
* A/V: HDMI

The following explains my struggle to achieve a working system with this hardware. See the report below for system configuration details.

Problem 1: Booting from a CD faulted with Carolina not being able to read its own *.sfs files from the CD. Pete22 had a similar (?) issue on p44 earlier in this thread, but it was first reported by superchook in this thread: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=84381. It does not yet appear to be completely resolved. -- something to do with a HD access race condition or such. Taking that hint, I created a folder and extracted Carolina's *.sfs files to it. Rebooting from the CD was then completed through a frugal install.

Request: If there is some timing feature in the boot process that can be changed, please fix it so other noobs like me can ejoy the glorious experience of Carolina. I will be happy to test and report.

Problem 2: Video was ridiculously slow even though this rig has medium spec's. After updating the repositories I found no valid AMD-Catalyst (fglrx) driver for my Radeon Evergreen/Juniper/5770 video card. Trying all of the fglrx drivers I could find in ibiblio or nluug did not work either. Serendipidously, I found a driver that works from "Akita" Puppy blogs, but see Problem 3.

Request: Please place a vetted set of AMD drivers in the repository. "jpup" on p37 of this thread also had to find his own Catlyst driver work around.

Problem 3: No HDMI audio. -- no surprise here. The Akita driver lacked the prompt to drop to the CLI and reboot after entering "aticonfig --initial" (no quotes) but I knew this was needed from installing other puppies and derivatives. There is some fussiness with configuring Alsa and Retrovol and rebooting once or twice to get "PCM" selected in Retrovol so that volume control will behave.

Note: It may be important, for those with desktop rigs that are similarly equiped, to do a fresh install in the same order as the problems/solutions listed herein to avoid such nuisances as hyper-fast YouTube video and lost sound.

Problem 4: Full screen display is not persistent with HDMI. In the Catalyst window, "underscan" setting is ignored. The solution, also from puppy blogs, is to enter the following code in a terminal and then restart X from the session control menu: amdconfig --set-pcs-val=MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan,0

Carolina is indeed worthy of all the praise that has been heaped upon it!
Developers: Please keep making this pup more and more excellent. No pressure, but with the departure of Saluki, You've got the ball!

Hi ezmuny3,
I can say something only about your first answer.
As far as I know... there is nothing to do :(
It happens with some hardware and some Puppy release "wait more" looking for sfs.
I asked for the same problem here in Puppy Forum, I did several tests and it doesn't depend on kernel version, but (maybe...) there would be necessary of some action more hard to do than add a boot parameter.
(too hard for me, I'm not skilled enough  )
Now, when it happens, I go on with a manually install, more or less as You did.

Hi,

Testing RC4, I've tried to setup a game pc for kids with zsnes emulator. Poweroff pc, plug in the gamepad, power on pc, start Carolina and I have my savefile all good, install zsnes pet, the SDL lib is already in place. Launch zsnes and test setting gamepad but the gamepad is not seen. Gamepad works fine under ubuntu so I know it's ok.

 Please correct this before the final release because it is a show stopper for kids ! 8)

Best regards

Seems to be a Carolina derivative although they don't acknowledge your efforts:

Simplicity Linux uses Puppy Linux and derivatives as a base, uses the XFCE window manager, and comes in 3 editions: Netbook, Desktop and Media.

It appears to be Carolina 004, there isn't much feedback only one post, I wouldn't bother with it as we have made a lot of changes since 004, looks to be a remaster with extra apps from the repo.

Could be someones attempt to try and make money from donations.
