I know that this will shock you   chuckle ... but I am finding this EFI/UEFI stuff confusing.

Is the Lighthhouse64 Installer supposed to autodetect and install accordingly, EFI or non-EFI or is the process manual?

Or am I wrongly presuming EFI compatibility due to kernel 3.7.10?

GParted shows the following:

/dev/sda1 fat32 100.00 MiB
/dev/sda2 unknown 128.00 MiB
/dev/sda3 ntfs 107.67 MiB
/dev/sda4 linux-swap 9.77 GiB
/dev/sda5 ext3 478.51 GiB
unallocated unallocated 1.34 MiB

I added sda4 & sda5 and the little unallocated space at the end is an anomaly of GParted calculations I suppose.

Thanks!

If this was a traditional 4-partition table, Gparted should see one of these partitions as extended. Since it does not, it sounds like Gparted is correctly recognizing the GPT.

So the next question is whether GRUB/Grub4Dos can install its boot code into this setup.

BTW, where did the Windows partition go? Sda3 isn't big enough to hold it.

The Ubuntu link you sent is so Ubuntu-centric it's not entirely easy to follow.

Do I read correctly that a Puppy Linux Frugal install will be forced into a fat32 partition?

Also, I get the "boot flag" of this but what is a "GPT disk"?

Thanks!

David
Creating an EFI partition

An EFI partition is necessary to install Ubuntu in EFI mode via the manual Ubuntu installer.

Since Ubuntu 12.04, it is possible to re-use an existing Windows7 EFI partition (without formatting it). If you use a previous version of Ubuntu, or if you have several installations of GNU/Linux in EFI mode, it is safer to create a new EFI partition EFI.

An EFI partition can be created via a recent version of GParted (the Gparted version included in the 12.04 disk is OK), and must have the following attributes:

Mount point: /boot/efi (remark: no need to set this mount point when using the manual partitioning, the Ubuntu installer will detect it automatically)

Size: minimum 100Mib. 200MiB recommended.

Type: FAT32

Other: must be located at the start of a GPT disk, and must have a "boot" flag.

The first three are only for MS Win7 (we removed Win8 & "upgraded" to Win7).

MS Win7 appears to operate OK.

Updated KDE-4.6.5-H, KMyMoney-4.6.3, Transmission-2.75 SFS

#45 Post by tazoc »

KDE-4.6.5-H, KMyMoney-4.6.3, Transmission-2.75 SFS files uploaded.

http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/601-x86_64/?C=M;O=D (most recent) or
http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/601-x86_64 (alphabetical)

KMyMoney requires 5_KDE-4.6.5-x86_64-H.sfs.
5_KDE-4.6.5-x86_64-H.sfs recommends Gvfs-1.12.3-x86_64-2.sfs. The others include all dependencies.
Q5sys wrote:I tried a complete new save file to test kvirc. Loaded the SFS and got the same error as before. So there must be a conflict with some other SFS I have.
I got a seg fault, but when trying to report it I got a QT error, which makes no sense since the file that isnt found... is exactly where it is.
screen cap http://puppy-linux.org/lhp601/errors/kvirc-error3.png
Strace log: http://puppy-linux.org/lhp601/errors/kvirc-error.txt

Since the other error was possibly QT related... maybe something is wonky with QT?
Yes, thank you for the SFS list, I have updated the KDE SFS, replacing the outdated Qt-4.7.0 with Qt-4.8.2 and a couple of bug fixes. I think you'll find KVIrc now works. Here is the SFS list I tested with, booting 601 with pfix=ram and selecting these at the 5 sec. boot prompt: (Select and configure SFS.)
  1. 5_KDE-4.6.5-x86_64-H.sfs (includes Qt-4.8.2)
  2. Flash-11.2.202.280-x86_64.sfs
  3. Gvfs-1.12.3-x86_64-2.sfs
  4. KMyMoney-4.6.3-1-x86_64-L1.sfs
  5. KVIrc-4.2.0-2-x86_64-1.sfs
  6. Transmission-2.75-x86_64-1.sfs
In Lighthouse64, the SFS files are sorted by basename so that names that begin with a numeral are layered above others. That is why our earlier tests with the Qt-4.8.2.sfs didn't work; (needed to layer Qt above the KDE SFS by prefixing the newer Qt SFS file name with a numeral e.g., 3_Qt-4.8.2.)

@edoc,
Lighthouse64 Universal Installer can only detect and install to Linux or vfat/ntfs partitions. 601 does not have any UEFI support. I am working on installer updates as follows for the next release:

Partition selection dialog scrollable if numerous partitions.
Improved detection of existing installs.
Experimental UEFI boot menu support.
Wine and 32-bit libs moved to extra SFS, (not built-in to base ISO)

Also: GIMP-2.8.4 Image Editor
Pidgin-2.10.7 Internet Messenger
Samba-4.0.5 File sharing
Drives Manager 2.0, updated busybox and more...

@live,
Thank you for the comments and suggestions. Q5sys has built http://puppy-linux.org/lhp601/sfs/libre ... _en-US.sfs

tazoc,

Thanks for the heads-up!

I misunderstood something I read elsewhere where it was stated that EFI/UEFI support was included in kernels 3.7.9 and more recent.

(I took that to mean that every distro using 3.7.9+ handled EFI/UEFI - I guess the meaning was that the tools were now there but the rest was up to each distro.)

Does this mean that if my laptop BIOS does not provide for disabling EFI/UEFI I cannot install Lighthouse64 until you activate the Beta EFI/UEFI support?

I guess I can boot from DVD for now & use a Savefile to hold my work, perhaps back it up to a dedicated SD card or USB stick.

Is that what you'd recommend, please?

Thanks! David

ps. Nice to see Wine moved to an alternative SFS vs default install, would also like to see Firefox & Claws set-off (with Seamonkey as an alternative default browser-mail app). Just a personal preference - I can always make it so manually. Tnx!

If you need UEFI or Secure boot, (or need a 3.8 kernel) I'd recommend Fatdog64. The UEFI support in the next LH64 release is based on Fatdog 620's but I don't yet have a machine to fully test it with, only VirtualBox. I would appreciate any beta testers that have a UEFI machine to let me know if I can PM you with a testing ISO when it's ready.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar! Thank you once again for your tireless work on improving LightHousePup. I dont think I have any free time, but I might on Wednesday. Hopefully everything will be perfect.
I'm also planning on building the newest Nvidia driver that came out this week. So hopefully that'll go smoothly as well.

I 'think' my new motherboard for my new system has UEFI as an option.
ASUS Z9PE-D16/2L
If it does, once I get it all put together I'll be able to test the UEFI loader.
Its in the mail to me right now and should arrive on Wednesday, but my processors dont get ordered till tomorrow, so I'll probably get them early next week.
Can't wait to get that thing built!

EDIT:
Board and CPU coolers arrived in the mail today!

Help with Remastering

#50 Post by helplessHack »

Hello all, I am having quite some trouble getting a remaster to work. To begin with, let me say:
1) I am still rather wet behind the ears with both Puppy and Linux in general, though I could be more at the intermediate level depending on who you ask!
2) I have googled this issue as well as searched through this forum for help with this issue and have come across no answers so far. If this is a known issue and has previously been dealt with, I apologize up front. A kind referral to the page where my answers exist would be great.
3) This might be an issue with Puppy more than an issue with Lighthouse specifically, I don't know.

So, here are my system specs - Lenovo laptop with Core i5-3210M, 6GB RAM, and not using discrete graphics.

The automated remaster script completes every time and I make an iso with it which I then put onto a USB stick. When I boot with my custom disc, everything seems to go fine until X tries to start. I get the message about "X being started by /usr/bin/xwin..." at the top of the screen, but then I get a message that says, "Exited from X to command line" plus the help blurb telling how to start a different window manager and how to run the xorg wizard. I've tried every option given to me by this message - xwin, xwin jwm, xwin openbox, xorgwizard, and xorgwizard-puppy. When I go to xorgwizard-puppy, I choose probe hardware and have picked both options it gives me (my screen's native res at both 16 & 24). No matter what I do, I keep getting sent back to "exited from X to command line." I have tried selecting both yes and no at the point in the script where it talks about customizing the /etc directory. I have tried copying all data from /root to /tmp/root and /etc to /tmp/etc at the proper times. I have run the remaster script both with SFSs loaded and not. And, btw I do save my session to a partition on my hard drive before running the remaster script (I think that that is required before you can remaster anyway, isn't it?). I just noticed this morning, while attempting this for the umpteenth time, that when I run xorgwizard-puppy at the command line it correctly identifies my video hardware but it says that the driver is unknown. I do know that it also correctly identifies and loads an intel driver when I run it off an unmodified disc.

What am I doing wrong? My guess is that the remaster process is not saving the intel driver or not saving the fact that am I using this driver. If that is the case, then I will need some instruction on how to manually add and/or configure that. Or maybe something else is going wrong. Or, more likely, I keep borking it with some kind of newb mistake. Anybody have any ideas? I think I will try the "manual remaster" process discussed here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=53241 while I wait for a response to this post and see if that changes anything. Of course, this version is still in beta, so that could have something to do with it also?

Oh yes, I would also like to say that, despite this and other issues I've had to tackle in the past, Puppy rocks!!! And Lighthouse Pup truly is a beacon in the stormy M$ seas.

Hello and welcome!

Thank you for your feedback and I apologize for the inconvenience. Yes you are correct, this is the first official Beta in the LH64 600 series. The remaster script is broken in LH64 601. I didn't realize that until I studied it further after your post, but it looks like the kernel modules aren't set up properly in the remaster. Wine is messed up as well. I will work on the scripts and hopefully have it fixed for the next release.

In the meantime, note the link to technosaurus' tutorial has a 32-bit ISO Master Pet that isn't recommended for LH64. A more recent version is in the Multimedia -> CD/DVD Burning menu. Or right-click on Lighthouse64-6.01-B.iso in ROX-Filer and choose 'ISO Master'.

The linked tutorial isn't designed for LH64 which differs somewhat from official Puppy. To extract your desired Pets, just right-click on each Pet and choose 'Extract-pet'.

Rather than using /sbin/dir2sfs to build the main file, L64-601.sfs, I right-click on it in ROX-Filer -> Edit-SFS. When you have finished copying the extracted contents of your Pets into into the working_tree folder, follow the prompts to rebuild the SFS. Then copy the modified L64-601.sfs to a new folder that differs from the location of your L64save file.

Navigate in ISO Master to your new main file before replacing it in the ISO. If desired, add or remove .sfs add-on files as well. In fact, if your Pets are available as SFS files, you won't need to extract them, just add the corresponding .sfs versions into the ISO with ISO Master. After burning the ISO to a blank CD/DVD, boot with puppy pfix=ram to try it out.

Again I'm sorry for the problems with the remaster script.

Regards,
TaZoC

Re: Help with Remastering

#56 Post by helplessHack »

Hi TaZoC, thanks for the welcome and the response. So here's where i'm at:

First, I need a swift kick in the behind - at the beginning of this experience, I downloaded isomaster from it's website and used it to insert the tarball into the LHP iso. Whenever I wanted to use it from that point forward, I would extract and complie it. All this time it has already been installed. I've looked through all the programs in the main menu so many times... duh!

Anyway, I have gone through the manual remaster process and it did work. I actually followed the instructions on this page and here, which is part of the Puppy Wiki, imagine that. Both of these describe the process using the command line, and after reading through technosaurus' tutorial I see that it is basically the same thing; the differences being that the cl version uses the initrd mount point and technosaurus uses the original sfs and the gui. Hence the name " Manual remaster - GUI, no command line", again duh!

Here is where I'm stuck now. Based on my understanding of what I was doing, it occurred to me that maybe I could copy the contents of any sfs addons that I had, which are also mounted in the initrd, into the same working directory that I had copied the contents of L64-601. Then they would all get combined together into one sfs. Technosaurus also mentions this, however it did not work for me. Not surprisingly, there are many files within the addons that are also within the base. It is way beyond my knowledge to know which of a set of duplicate files to keep. I imagine that the layered filesystem knows how to deal with this. However, isn't your remaster script, when working correctly, capable of combining several addons with the base? It's kinda the whole idea, right? I notice that you recommended that I insert the addons that I want into the iso instead of combining them. I'd be fine with doing that, I have already done it. So my last questions is: is there any way to skip the sfs prompt and have all the addons on my disc automatically loaded into RAM every time I boot from the disc? I've already tried adding pfix=ram, sfsauto, copy after initrd.xz in isolinux.cfg when remastering, but it just skipped all my addons.

Thanks again for your help and for all the hard work you do!

So, it looks like the only way to accomplish what I'm trying to do is to edit the init file found inside of init.xz. I've already tried to edit the bootconfig file also within, but I still end up with the default one when I boot from a CD continaing the new init.xz. Unfortunately, while I can get a basic understanding of what it is doing when reading it, editing the init is well beyond my skill level at this point, and I certainly don't expect you to devise a whole new chunk of code just for me. This is fine though, it would be nice to be able to not have to wait for the sfs prompt every time I boot from a disc, but it's really not that much of an inconvenience. Besides, as you said, there will be a new version of LHP, so I will just wait until that comes out and remaster all of my addons together with the base at that time. In the meantime, for kicks, i'll see if I can't teach myself a little more about that code and figure it out for myself.

Hi Tazoc
Just done a manual frugal install to an ntfs partition on my E732 laptop, booting via an ext2 SDcard using grub4dos.
Very impressive, chrome browser seems to work well.

Edit: Even more impressed than initial encounter a few hours ago - fantastic puppy - does it all extremely well.
Edit2: It gets even better - the more I use this fantastic puppy, the more amazed I become.

Hi Ray,
Thank you for the kind words, comments and sys-info report.

I've been busy working on the Universal Installer, Remaster LiveCD, Multisession mode, initrd.xz updates and numerous bug fixes. The next release will include new versions of Gimp, Firefox, Pidgin, Samba, Simple Samba Management, Claws Mail as well as SFS add-ons LibreOffice-4.0.3, Skype, Transmission and VLC.

Regards,
TaZoC
