Cloud Computing For Every Puppy

#1 Post by sszindian »

Welcome to the little 93K .pet that turns your present version of Puppy into a ‘Wiz-Bang’ Cloud computer without affecting your present version of Puppy.

While developing the next version of ‘Cloud Puppy-2.0‘ (Cloud Puppy-1.0 is already available in the derivatives section) I was thinking about how nice it could be if everyone could use their favorite version of Puppy and still be able to dabble with Cloud Computing and besides, I would not have to go through all that work and the headaches developing a new Cloud Puppy that many might not like to change over to, hey... after all, if most Puppy users are like me... they pretty much already have a favorite version of Puppy setup that already involved a lot of work, why bother to start over again right?

Well, thanks to a small program developed by ‘Puppymartin’ called AppStarter... it was the perfect solution to have the best of two-worlds on one’s present system.

What this little .pet does is create a file in ‘UTILITY - GENERAL UTILITIES - called: CloudApps. When you click on that, a small pop-up window appears on your desktop.

In this window are already some Cloud Applications for you to check out (kind of like your own Cloud Desktop). There is also room to install nine (9) more of your own Cloud Apps that you may find on the Internet as well as an icon that says: ‘More Apps’ that brings up all the applications that are presently on your system (nice way to easily get to some of your standard apps.)

Remember... you use your present Puppy system without any changes (except the Cloud Apps menu entry). You use your current favorite default browser and... if Cloud is not for you, just go to your Puppy Package Manager and delete the .pet which I hope you won’t do without giving Cloud a fair shake! It is really nice and has many advantages over software-installed programs and there is little doubt Cloud is going to be the way we compute in the future besides, this little .pet will extend the life of your present Puppy version for many years!

Soooo.... I guess you can just call this ‘Cloud Puppy-2.0‘ If you like... Jump on your Puppy and explore uncharted territory... Hmmm... seems I’ve heard that before somewhere?

‘Enjoy and have fun!’ :D

Icons For This .Pet!

#2 Post by sszindian »

After you install this .pet on your Puppy... you may want to make some icons of your own for additional Cloud Apps you have found?

There are icon-makes for sure but an easy way is to use two Puppy programs

(1) PupSnap to capture a small area of a graphic or picture, say about two-inches square (doesn't have to be exact.)

(2) In the .pet there is already a program called 'PIXLR' it's a fantastic Cloud paint and graphic program. Go to it, upload your new small graphic you just captured, click on the IMAGE header, select resize, make the size 66 pixels wide (height will adjust automatically and should be about the same or close) Save the new sized image back to your computer in usr/share/icons folder and you now can place it in the Cloud Box with the others already there. Then just add the name of the new graphic to the Add, Change, Cloud Apps area (and of course include the URL for your new Cloud App - use existing examples already there for your format) :D

I have promised to not post in every thread but this subject really interest me and I did think of posting last time too but had hoped somebody else would break the ice and start.

You write this
I hope you won’t do without giving Cloud a fair shake! Cloud here in Sweden is just a more fun name for the whole of Internet but I guess more strictly it is "services" that have these "apps" you talk about.

Doing "Word" online instead on the hdd.

Could you describe so a complete noob get it?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

What is Cloud?

#4 Post by sszindian »

Hi noob!

If you go to this tread (Cloud Puppy):

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67585

read through it (each page) it should pretty well explain just what 'Cloud Computing' is. For the most part, it's already what you are doing 'Internet' but with Cloud Apps, you use the app online, just like it was on your HDD, without the hastle of installing the app., or maintaining it, (the app provider does all that at their Cloud site.) and you have no worries about configuring, installing, upgrading, and so forth, you just use it.

The best way to really see what it is all about is download this little .pet and go try some of the sites I already have listed in it! Just be careful, go for the FREE stuff that's available, some want $$$ for their services but most offer FREE services up to a certain amount of use or storing your files, you have to do a little research in this area.

Desktop Icon

#5 Post by sszindian »

If you want to place an icon on your desktop that starts the 'My-Cloud-Apps.pet' program right from the desktop (instead of going to the Menu-Utility-GeneralUtilities-CloudApps each time) Click on your 'File Icon' (The little house) on your desktop, a small window appears with some folders. Up in the left-hand corner you will see a Green Arrow pointing UP. Click that once (takes you back to your main system files) then select these folders:

usr/share/applications/AppStarter.desktop

Just Click-And-Hold on the AppStarter.desktop icon, drag it down to your desktop and release the mouse button.

That's it, it's on your desktop (you can click-and-hold and drag it to where you want it, just like all your other icons!)

Much easier to get to your Cloud Apps this way.

Excellent Solitare For Puppy

#6 Post by sszindian »

Solitaire:

One thing that has been lacking for Puppy Linux has been a really good version of Solitaire... Well fret no more, you can now have...
Over 50 beautiful free web based Solitaire games. Klondike, Spider, FreeCell and more. No installs, no plugins, no flash needed.
And, they work perfect when you add the URL below to your 'Cloud Computing For Every Puppy .pet' program.

This will perform with most any browser you use however, I have found that Iron (10-12-14) Browsers work the fastest for these games probably Chromium will also. The new Seamonkey works fairly fast with some of the latest Puppy versions using the newer kernels.

http://worldofsolitaire.com/

Enjoy Solitaire like you've never experienced on your Puppy before!!!!

Satellite Viewing

#7 Post by sszindian »

Thanks to 'aarf' for this URL

What we have here is a fantastic replacement for GoogleEarth for your Puppy.

Nothing to install on your computer, no upkeep, no anything... just use it (from the Cloud).

It opens in your default browser and gives you features that even GoogleEarth does not.

And... its much, much faster rendering views than GoogleEarth is... by all means add it to your little 'Cloud.pet'

The URL: http://mapper.acme.com/

Cool Fonts

#9 Post by sszindian »

Here is a super site for creating 'Cool Fonts' in an online Cloud Environment and a nice addition for our Cloud .pet program.

You simply select the type of font you want, spell out what you want it to say, size it, select your color, style type, with or without transparency background and many more options then their website renders your font-text and you just download and use it wherever you want.

To say the least, it's really 'Cool' and... all for free!

'Enjoy'

Hello, sszindian!

Wow! 8) What a great way to upgrade | extend any Puppy! You're modernizing me!

Only grumble: is there a way you can make your panel stay on screen instead of it closing down after each choice? I realize you can put the icon on the desktop, but still, it would save a few clicks. Also, maybe provide a way to provide a short description of each of your panel's big icons -- on right click, perhaps?

Still, this is great as it is! Only a few hours ago, I was thinking to myself that the forum was becoming "same old, same old". You proved me wrong, yeay! :D

Paying forward, here are a few contributions for now. Sites I find interesting, mostly language-related, that I had made *desktop files for.

Worthy of note, I can say from my experience with them that the Spellchecker (EN) and BonPatron (FR) sites are top-notch, very user-friendly and competent compared to similar sites. They also have a Spanish section. (Sorry if that comes out as a plug -- it isn't. It's just my user experience, I'm not linked to them in any way.) RefDesk and WordReference are also great, way up there in their field, IMO.

From one Indian to another - I love that mapper site!! :D That's really awesome, and you're so right on how it's so much faster than Google Earth - even faster than Google Maps and it doesn't hog down my computer resources like "G.Maps" does either! Hmm... I wonder just how they do that? Because they draw their maps off from Google if you've noticed Indian ( lower lefthand side on my screen anyway ).

Truly a great find for me to use as I've had need of using maps a lot lately so this place is a real godsend. I'm so thankful you posted this site! Keep up your great work for the Puppy Community Indian. I sure appreciate it and I'm sure others do as well. :)

Cheers/Amicalement,

Update...

#12 Post by sszindian »

Here's an update for those who use Firefox as your default browser and are installing 'My-Cloud-Apps.pet' in the recent Dpup-Precise-3.7.2 (possibly other Precise or newer Woof-builds of Puppy's also).

1: Install My-Cloud-Apps.pet on your computer (if it isn't installed already).

2: Click on it from the Menu entry.

3: At the bottom of the pop-up screen, click on 'To Change Or Add Cloud Apps. -- CLICK HERE --'

4: Then where it says-

#########
# Row 1 #
#########

LABEL1="Audio Bible"
ICON1="/usr/share/icons/bible-1.jpg"
EXEC1="defaultbrowser http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/audio/"

Change it to read-

#########
# Row 1 #
#########

LABEL1="Audio Bible"
ICON1="/usr/share/icons/bible-1.jpg"
EXEC1="defaulthtmlviewer http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/audio/"

5: Repeat the change down through all the 'LABEL entries 1 through 20.

Now, Firefox will remain as your default browser for all the regular Internet stuff and Seamonkey Browser will display the entries you have in My-Cloud-Apps.pet

If you retain Seamonkey as your only browser, you may or may not need this update... test before making it!

OCR in the Cloud

#14 Post by sszindian »

I think this might be of use to several users and is certainly a nice addition to your cloud.pet.

http://www.free-ocr.com/

As per their website:

Free-OCR.com is a free online OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool. You can use this service to extract text from any image you supply.

This service is free, no registration necessary. We also do not need your email address.

Just upload your image files. Free-OCR takes either a JPG, GIF, TIFF BMP or PDF (only first page).

The only restriction is that the images must not be larger than 2MB, no wider or higher than 5000 pixels and there is a limit of 10 image uploads per hour.

Free-OCR can handle images with multi-column text and also supports more languages: Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.

enjoy!!!

I don't have a chrome browser installed but you should check and make sure it is 'Set To Your DEFAULT Browser (that's what this little program looks for!) then try again.

Cloud Computing for TahrPup 6.0

#17 Post by mikeslr »

Hi sszindian and all,

Just wanted to mention that sszindian's pet, available from first post of this thread, works fine in TahrPup 6.0.
As the post just above this makes clear, it requires that you have chosen something as your default browser:

Menu>Setup>Default Application Chooser>Left Panel>Third Selection from the Top, named "Browser": Click the "down-arrow" to select from Internet Browsers on your system. Don't forget to click "Apply".
Worked with:
Chromium 38, Palemoon -- installed pets
Shinobar's Google-Chrome Portable
Opera, firefox and Seamonkey run from external folders located at /mnt/home.
Tested by initiating CloudApps via Menu>Utilities>Cloud Apps, then clicking Pixlr-paint.

No reason to think it will not work on any Pup, using any browser set as "default".

Hi sszindian - nice work, there are some real gems here. Do you think it is possible to find a way to access this utility direct from the browser rather than via menus or via a desktop icon?

I would like to create a browser bookmark (of the format that I can never remember that looks something like \\\file\\xxxx...) and have that bookmark open the cloud pet window. Then I would be using your pet as a sort of 'bookmark extension method'.

I like the visual aspect of your pet window - it's almost like the Win8 'metro' interface but prettier. If I could find a way to access it direct from browser bookmarks it would be a great way to present my children/grandchildren with an entertaining interface to their own bookmarked sites, rather than a dry old standard bookmarks list. (And if I could have multiple cloud_mark_windows - one for each user - that would be heaven)

Especially love the link to the 200 games site! I'm using Slacko 5.6 (derivative) and Firefox.
cheers!

Thank you for the compliments!

I know what you would like to have unfortunately, I'm not a programmer... I was able to take this utility in a form developed by another puppy member from years past and make what I could from it by simple logic and lots and lots of trial/error and time!!!

Now possibly an alternative for what you need CAN be had!

If you take the cloud puppy program (after it's installed - drag & Drop it's ICON from usr/share/applications to the desktop desktop) that will create an easy ICON access. Now I realize you would like to have your browser access My-Cloud-Apps.pet but I say.... a better way is to have My-Cloud-Apps.pet access your browser! You can do much much more this way (I believe).

Next... within the functions to add your own cloud URL's etc... simple HTML code can be used to create additional menu pages, an entire book, a website of your own to use offline, any type of graphics or ANYTHING YOU CAN JUST ABOUT IMANAGE! From that you can hyperlink additional HTML pages It is a very very powerful little application and using it this way makes it UNLIMITED for whatever you want to do. Yes, you must know a bit of simple HTML commands. My-Cloud-Apps.pet can make use of your default browser both ONLINE and while OFFLINE making the browser a powerful programming tool using HTML.

In my personal My-Cloud-Apps.pet I have one program that is called 'Personal' with several stories I've written about my gold prospecting adventures going back many years. I also keep gold prospecting records and graphics/pictures of my gold prospecting days in Montana and another in New Mexico and they entail several hundreds of articles in Website-Like HTML format that I can view or work with offline through the default browser.

One thing nice to know is that my little My-Cloud-Apps.pet seems to work in every puppy program I've tried it in from back to early puppy's right up to the latest like Tahr and the recent Slacko's and everything in between.

All that said.... the trick is knowing some HTML code to do all this. If in any particular way I can, I will be glad to help you develop the HTML you need for your goal(s) in the little My-Cloud-Apps.pet That's entirely up to what you want ???...

Nice Satellite App

#20 Post by sszindian »

Those using and having a need for satellite programs will find this as an exceptional cloud application. It's updated on a regular basis to provide more-current information than most other satellite programs.

This is one you will want to install in your little 'My-Cloud-Apps.pet' program.

https://zoom.earth/#51.178827,-1.826175 ... 2016-07-20
or just-
https://zoom.earth/

By the way, My-Cloud-Apps.pet still works with all the new Pup's I've tested and yes, even the 64-bit ones!

It's quiet nice having 'cloud-resources' available! :)
