I downloaded the latest Puppy 4, then made a live CD.

It went though the installer and provided a desktop on an old e-machine

But booting from the HD takes me to a kernel choice menu; I've not been able to get any of the options to bring up the desktop. One send the machine into kernel panic.

I can access the file system through Trinity Rescue Disk.

With that access I tried to install xoscope 1.8 via the tar, but that has stalled, apparently because of some command conflict inside the Trinity package and /or some shortcoming in Puppy (?).

It runs fine from CL and GUI in my Ubuntu 11.10.

Digging in, Puppy may not possess the needed requirements?

http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/

The README file lists "WHAT YOU NEED:" and these are the first few topics.
LINUX: audio mixer, GTK, "svgalib" package to build the SVGA console version, ibvgamisc" from the "g3vga" kit to get text on the
console version.

So. What do i need to do for Puppy 4 to boot from the HD or is the machine too decrepit even for Ppuppy? (BTW I could not get the more basic version to work or download, the whys have been lost in the confusion.)

So. Even if the E-Machine can handle Puppy 4, will Puppy 4 run xoscope?

Is there any more info needed?

Thanks,

I personally fill outmanned by to little info about the E- Machine and its specks. Might not get to many answers here as it looks to me that one needs to start to google what is a e-machine and then guess the kind of e-machine and its specks.

That aside.. Welcome:-)

I reckon so. Rolling Eyes

How's about these for starters:
More details on the specs of that 'old e-machine' (CPU, RAM, Graphics card etc)
What kind of installation did you do (Full or Frugal ?)
How are your drives setup (Partitions, Sizes/Format etc)
Is Puppy the only OS on there, or do you have another already installed ?

Provide answers to the above and it will make it easier for others to help you.

CatDude

P.S
You say "I downloaded the latest Puppy 4"
well exactly which one would that be ?
.
