Hei Atle.
See these links:
Nvidia drivers
See the supported cards. Your card is there.

Do you run the original 5.2.8, or the LupuPlus 5.2.8 with a lot of extra drivers?

I was trying with the normal Lupu Tallboy...

Might try the Lupu + as well... do that right after posting this.

I did try this Nvidia once... This time I shall try it better, and check what drivers that are present BEFORE I install the Nvidia driver from the always great Shinobar...

If problem consists, I guess the right place to post a "case" is in that thread.

Anyhow...

I think I might also just make a Lupu + with Libreoffice 4, Tixati, FF19 with mobile internet tweaks and Frisbee 2. I need something to chew on:-)

See you live in Oslo Tallboy... Maybe we should take a coffee or half a glass if beer one day?

Puppy 5.2.8 Lupu has proven to be the most stable, reliable, easy to install Puppy I've found for 5-10yo hardware. This makes it a good distro to recommend to all those other restless Ubuntu users.

To preserve that claim-to-fame, perhaps a granular updating approach might be considered with the objective of enabling us to employ just those new functionalities our hardware can support well.

For example, the most problematic aspect of installing any new version seems to be video. I'd like to be able to apply the video changes required to support some new capability in a separate step with easy roll-back. If they create unsolvable problems, the new functionality could be skipped without losing all new functionalities.

WOW what is this .....

#2305 Post by Volhout »

I use a celeron desktop in day to day's work. It started with the 52x series. It run Puppy 528-004 for over a year now (I was to lazy to upgrade to 005). Since I moved the desktop to a corner where I did not have an opportunity to run an ethernet cable, I gave it a USB WIFI dongle. It was immediately recognized, and I could connect to the world.
That in it self was amazing .....

2 years later (now) the dongle broke and I was given a new one to try by a friend. I plugged it in, and ...... it was not recognized. Bummer. But ........

In the setup menu I discovered the button "WINDOWS". And yes, I fed the windows driver CD to the desktop, pointed to the 32 bits XP inf file, and ...... it works.

I am typing this now after having checked speed, and it is fabulous.

----------------------- Absolutely fabulous.--------------------------

Whoever worked on Lucid 528 did a marvelous job. Thank you all !!!!

Lupuplus has more wifi drivers than the regular lupu, so might already support your new dongle. Please try that if for no other reason than to confirm that it is supported. Otherwise, please tell us the details of the new device, particularly its hardware ID (which you can find with pupscan or the "lsusb" command). That way, I can research the driver situation for it.

Thanks for your positive report.

usb wifi dongle

#2307 Post by Volhout »

Hi Richard,

528 still working great with the dongle and windows driver. Used it last night and I achieve almost constantly my maximum bandwidth from the provider (10Mbps downstream, and 1Mbps upstream). I didn't notice a single connection drop.

The dongle is made by ZYXEL (NWD2205).

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0586:341f
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001

I assume the id is : 0586:341f since it is the only device plugged into the PC.

Pupscan
Manufacturer=Realtek
Product=802.11n WLAN Adapter
SerialNumber=00e04c000001
VendorID=0586 ProductID=341f KERNEL-MODULE=ndiswrapper

Is this information usefull ? I hope it will make puppy better.

Thanks for your endless help to Puppy Linux. I remember you have given me good advise before. As I recall (I hope my miemory serves me well, and I don't mix things up) with cups enabling me to connect to a windows PC connected printer via wireless. At that time I was running Puppeee.
But your name pops up often if compatibility issues rise, and it almost always ends with "it works now". Thank you ....

Regards,

Harm

Thanks for the haardware ID info. I find in lupuplus the "modalias" entry for it:

Code: Select all

alias usb:v0586p341Fd*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip* 8192cu
which may not be in your original-lupu installation. If module 8192cu is not there, you can download it from here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 469#462469

I suggest installing it to a fresh pupsave environment for experimentation. But if you choose to use it in your regular lupu-puppy, I recommend swapping in the lupuplus puppy files (initrd.gz, lupu528.sfs, vmlinuz), which should not disturb anything. But you might try that with a copy of your main pupsave instead of the original, just to be sure.

Thank you for your kind words about my "help". However, I doubt I advised on "cups enabling me to connect to a windows PC connected printer via wireless", since I probably did not know enough at that time. My wifi knowledge has been a result of my seemingly endless work on integrating the Broadcom wl driver and frisbee, all within the past year. But now I am "dangerous" in that area.

Hi Playdayz,
just writing to thank you (and rerwin :) ) for your resurrectionist efforts with Lucid. I'm testing a range of pupplets for use on a PIII 500MHz 512MB RAM military-grade laptop, a RT686 that is badged as 'roda', 'Amrel', 'Opentec' or 'ToughNote' on different corners of the globe. Great for some field research I need to do in future, and the Lucid-era applications are practically all I need. Interestingly too, Eduroam is a major wifi enterprise for universities, internationally and only Frisbee (I found) could get me through the extra certificate tunneling whatever - but NOT any Woof-compiled Frisbee versions (?) so your efforts in that department are *especially* appreciated, and have saved me hours of heartache.
Actually I'm still to sort out minor quibbles with the b43 broadcom wifi in pcmcia, and I'm in the process of updating my favourite applications/repository updates. Are there plans to update the Lucid Quickpet with a more recent FireFox perhaps, or other browsers like Qupzilla (and all those qt dependencies...)? These would get my vote, if you had the time / inclination. Belay the latter - slimboat looks really cool...

My main issue is my pupsave - I haven't been able to get a clean shutdown and the machine hangs at "Lucid is shutting down'. On this machine, I have no HDD and only floppy/cd-rom, plus a usb1 port for normal boot ups. I'm running my install off a BootFlash of Lupe Libre 528, but on the vfat partition (4GB) I opted for a pupsave in Ext3 format. Could this be why I can't reboot etc cleanly, do you think I need to start over with a pupsave.2fs? Regrettably I've had to use the usb 1 port rather than the pcmcia card+usb2 ports as I can't get this particular flash drive booting, where I can for other flash drives.
Cheers!

Problems like this usually are caused by a bad or corrupted save file.

However you also say this:
had to use the usb 1 port rather than the pcmcia card+usb2 ports as I can't get this particular flash drive booting, where I can for other flash drives.
May have a problem caused by the flash drive and how it is working.
Flash drives do not last forever.

The save file being made ext2 (2fs) or ext 3 (3fs) format should not be an issue.

What I would try:
Boot not using a save file (puppy pfix=ram boot option)
At the boot screen hit F2 key.
Add the option
puppy pfix=ram

Shutdown and do not make save file. Should get good shutdown.
If works OK save file is bad.
Easy fix delete old save file and start fresh with new save file.

If startup and shutdown, without using a save file, does not work.

Try boot option

puppy acpi=off
or
puppy acpi=force

If this has no effect.
You have a bad install of Lucid Puppy or a bad flash drive.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Thank you bigpup! I'm certain you are correct with your assessment and I'll re-create a fresh pupsave. If that doesn't work then I'll relegate the flash to emergency data use ony - it's a dud, hasn't had much previous use. Thanks for commenting on the 2fs / 3fs issue - I was concerned about BootFlash vfat rather than ext2/ext3 (and ext4? I don't recall seeing it as a Lucid option, but my mind is a blur) formatting. I tried the flash on a laptop with boot support for usb and it booted and LucidLibre reconfigured fine - but on shutdown it had a VERY long pause on "Libre is shutting down" and hung fatally on "...creating .3fs pupsave".

I definitely don't accuse the Lucid Puppy base - I dug out an old CD with My First Remaster on it - a 520 with upgraded kernel and all my preferred applications and settings - and it booted on the RT686 and saved a reusable pupsave on another flash drive with absolutely no problems.
Actually, that is the reason why I'm interested in LupuLibre as a base (after long overlooking it for newer Puppy "itches" on dual-core hardware) - with academic-oriented applications like Docear and Zotero maturing to very functional and stable stages, AND with Libre add-on functionality - not to mention the pre-installed java that will help with things like ImageJ, Jabref and JGR (Java GUI for R ) - well, as far as ye olde hardware requirements are concerned- the sky's the limit for us pigs in proverbial :)

Woul MakeHuman program work in Lupu or would somebody need
to work on it to be a pet or sfs? The program is described to need
python would that work for Lupu to include that language

What does one need to do to get it to work?

Hi nooby,
I'm well out of my league here, but if you load the Lupu_devx_528-4.sfs, you will have Python 2.6.5 installed after a reboot. It would be my hope that you could *just* do the ol' "make" / "configure" and "install" process from there to have Quantal running in Lucid 528 (after sorting out any further dependencies that might be required, like the sdl stuff).
This link to a how-to was posted on forums earlier and I'm using it as a general guide - perhaps it might help you too: http://fermatslastspreadsheet.com/2012/ ... or-coding/

I reckon that I'm in a similar boat as you - I'm trying to compile a package (CowLog 2.0 http://cowlog.org/ and its dependencies Python 2.7.3 (ish) and PyQT4 - the latter requiring SIP pre-installed...). I've installed devx and downloaded all the files into build directories, but the puzzle pieces just aren't fitting together. I'm still getting my head around the compilation caper - and I see that at least two single/guest posters have requested updated Python and PyQT4 for Lucid in the recent past. Perhaps pelo's recent suggestion for multi-flavoured Lupu bases (java/python/qt etc) isn't such a bad idea!

Perhaps I should make my plea on the proper 'requests' forum?
I thought I might try to make a Python 2.7.3 pet or at least upgrade my Lucid Python. I've downloaded the latest series of Python 2.7.3, and extracted it to /mnt/home/lucid/build Python-2.7.3/Python-2.7.3, then in console commanded "./configure" and then "make install". (Ermm... toplevel directory???) I get some error messages concerning missing modules for sunaudiodev and bsddb185, but otherwise looks OK. The command "python --version" returns Python 2.6.5, so my original system is still unmodified. Could someone please either point me in the right direction from here, or outline how they made a python pet [EDIT: or SFS]?
I'm just missing key elements of information, and its got me spinning in circles. I'm aware that developers (and developer-minded folk) consider these sort of requests sometimes odious - the sands are always shifting and in all sorts of directions - and I need to get the troubleshooting process sorted for my own benefit, as various applications evolve and migrate their own dependencies. Are there helpful videos maybe on key upgrades in Puppy? But any advice would be thankfully received :)

hi nooby,

i've had this running before on lucid puppy a while ago....

these instructions are only for lucid puppy

first off download the tar.gz http://makehuman.googlecode.com/files/m ... -i386.tbz2(note it's for python 2.6)
you then need to install these ...
libsdl-image http://mirror.pnl.gov/ubuntu//pool/univ ... 1_i386.deb
libGLEW http://mirror.pnl.gov/ubuntu//pool/univ ... 1_i386.deb
python http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/pupp ... -Lucid.pet

you'll probably need to install your graphic drivers as well.

unzip the tar.gz and left click on 'makehuman' to run it. (note that the .deb for debian also works)

Thanks 666philb! That's very encouraging, I'll give that a go mid-week. I'm *hoping* that say if I build a pet in pemasu's Upup precise 3.7.2, it would be cross-compatible with Lucid? Or would it be another case of being strangled by Python?
[EDIT: whoops you stated it clearly already - I overlooked it in my excitement - Lucid + Python = world of pain :( ]
