Upup Raring 3.8.7 with non-PAE 3.8.7 kernel, created using Subject description: Barry Kauler`s latest woof at the moment |
|
Upup Raring 3.8.7 has been uploaded. A lot fixes has been included. I recommend strongly to update into this update.
Download link: http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/UpupRaring/UpupRaring387/
Latest announcement from this link: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=700603#700603
You can read through next pages and posts to see what bugs has been found and I have tried to face most of them.
Feedback, bug reports and bug fix suggestions are appreciated.
It has non-PAE 3.8.7 kernel with large driver support.
Barry Kauler has been the main architect by incorporating Ubuntu Raring Ringtail package support to the woof. I have merely used that work and started to fix things more.
Barry Kauler has created woof2 specs based on Ubuntu Raring Ringtail packages. I have compiled kernel for it and started to fix those things that were left to be fixed.
There is still work to do. But...I think this build is good enough for testing, feedback, reporting and bug fix suggestions.
It is easier when there are people and community giving feedback compared to do it yourself without feedback.
I have included gparted which has f2fs support included. Thanks 01micko.
Also intel gma graphics support for intel atom based netbooks should be there. Thanks 01micko.
I consider this one beta stage build after feedback of 7 pages.
The build has libgtk+3 included. Initial support for gtk3 themes has been included.

Nice for alpha
Frgal USB install using f2fs-usb-installer in triple boot with PHAT and upup-precise-3.8.2 no issue, booted straight up. Made 512 ext4 save on f2fs filesystem, no problem.
Correct res on my compaq presario cq-60 lappy (see hardinfo report for more), sound working. So the silly issue where I couldn't get right res in progs is fixed. May have been kernel intel driver issue, anyway, issue is dead now.
Did a seamonkey sync (works with firefox too) to grab all my bookmarks and settings, except flashblock for SM is different for FF, no big deal. Works flawlessly otherwise.
Abiword, gnumeric, gnome-mplayer etc etc all start from icons.
GParted starts fine and recognises f2fs.
Hmmm.. minixcal? Same issue, crashing X if closed by right-click on pager >"close". ON restart X frisbee (which works fine), the icon shows disconnected but is connected, dunno if Richard fixed that yet.
Bash-3.0??? Yeah, I know, Barry hasn't updated, it's 9 years old now! Guess it's ok for alpha
Nice work!
EDIT:
I noticed this in slackware-current (and raring pup) where Xorg is the latest, a dramatic improvement in glxgears numbers for intel
Code: | # glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.248 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.595 FPS
# export vblank_mode=0
# glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
4715 frames in 5.0 seconds = 942.849 FPS

4641 frames in 5.0 seconds = 928.143 FPS

Hi pemasu,
Looks good. Posting from it now. What a difference fonts can make! They render really nice in this build.
Found this in the xorg log:
Code: | [82.852] (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0) |
And a quick OT question - how big is your kernel compile directory?

Thank you guys of your initial reports.
01micko. I will update bash:
yes|bash||exe,dev>null,doc,nls|pet:quirky
I noticed your Barry`s blog post.
Good to hear about intel graphics. I suppose that your intel and James C noticed nouveau problem in Upup Precise latest are both possibly kernel module dependent. I believe I will update the kernel in Upup Precise to the newer version also, but it will possibly be even newer one.
Thank you of the f2fs tests. I havent had time to do it myself yet.
Anikin. Kernel compile directory during compiling is big. Now when the source has been prepared ie ready for compressing for sfs file for module compiling (preparing the source with 'make prepare' shrinks kernel source a lot) and with the folder containing kernel headers and kernel pet folders and those created pets and kernel source sfs, the folder size is 860 Mb.
Anikin, that modesetting driver is meant for those intel gma graphics intel atom netbooks which need it. It has been transferred in alternate location, so that it is not loaded if not needed. The xorgwizard and cedarview scripts should handle the right usage and transfer of that driver to the active location when needed. Aarf and Raffy for example have netbooks which need that driver.
If loaded unneeded, it has bad side-effects. Nvidia graphics boot to the black screen and that driver is also non-accelerated.
I will include PupClock, PupControl and PupSysinfo to the next build. Minixcal bug will be handled at the same time.

Would this machine (Pentium IV + 82845G intel video chip) be too old for k3.8.4 ...would'nt it?

2. abiword: hangs up when wanting Open or Save a file
(= just for info ... as i do not use abiword at all except for some occasional performing format conversions --> abi-2.8.6 is enough for me)
3. Gnumeric-1.12.1 -->Yep !
notice: there seems being a «little» bug inherent to gnumeric -->see workaround here:

hope this helps

Hi,
abour glxinfo problem in above post: here is a solution/workaround ?

tells libLLVM-3.1.so.1 should be missing.
so installing: (from sid debian repo)
- libllvm3.1_3.1-2_i386.deb
+ another deps libffi5_3.0.10-3_i386.deb
seems fixing that problem --> please check.
note: gcad3d-2.00 starts OK + axis coordinates labels x,y are well displayed (not the case in uPup-Precise-3.X) see scrennshot.

Hello Pemasu
Thanks for this new puppy. Rabid Rottweiler, maybe!
With my Athlon II plus RS880G integrated GPU it is working well and I can confirm the highest glxgears score for a 32 bit Puppy, when using the xorg Radeon R600g driver.
There was an error loading AIGLX initially.
libLLVM-3.1.so.1 not found. (libLLVM -3.0 was there).
I installed the libLLVM31 package from the Ubuntu repo and then AIGLX loaded correctly.

Like the pic Art.. . I'll add it as a splash as long as it works ok in the f2fs-usb-installer proggy (which incidentally seems to work fine with raring pup.) (here)
BTW, pemasu, I have a print server shared with CUPS, a PDF printed to the server just fine ootb. (FYI)

Thanks again of the feedback.
Yeah libgl1-mesa-dri has libllvm dependency and the needed version is libllvm3.1.
Sniff. 20 Mb uncompressed size and I have non-working 20 Mb older libllvm3.0 version included. That lib is HUGE. But seems to be needed anyway.
Thank you Artsown of the pic. It will be in the next build as wallpaper choice also.
Upup Raring is shaping up nicely.

Thanks, pem, - very interesting.
Quick-look: Radeon9200/XP3000+/1Gb - no problems on sound, video, connection and Flash. Rapid boot, snappy response - ootb.
nV MX400/64 proved much more interesting: with pfix=ram, nox arrive at garbled video occupying ~20% top of screen, full width. With pfix=ram, same garbled video shows for ~30s but then switches into an entirely viable mode, with all sound, video, connection and Flash functions operative ootb.
Three cheers for non-PAE, kindly accept a gong for ISA slot enabled! This is real progress and a nice poke-in-the-eye for one of the unnecessarily greediest industries on the planet. Rummaging around for some dinosaurish boards - later.
What else would you have us test?

Important bug fix. This one fixes Abiword saving and surely many others also:
In console:
ln -s /usr/lib/glib-2.0/glib-compile-schemas /usr/bin/glib-compile-schemas
and then...
glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas
Will be fixed in next build.
Sage. At this alpha stage, everything is under inspection. Use the build with your normal needs, I am sure there still can pop up things which need fixing.
