Low package manager download speeds in Slacko

#1 Post by fixit »

I am getting low download speeds under Slacko.

I am getting 20Kbps when it should be 100K or better for a cable modem.

Is there a way to speed it up ?

Thanks.

You mean with a browser? Which? Do they improve using wget? << If you need to ask- supply a link.

which browser are you using

is the low speed with the browser?

The low speed is mostly with the package manager.

I use Firefox.

The PPM can't find some programs, so I have to download them.

Sometimes when they open, they don't offer to install.

Another question.

How can I change which programs are at the bottom left and right ?

Thanks,

Andy

I think the ppm points to ibiblio which can be quite slow

there is a choice of download and install or just download, could this be the cause?

don't understand about bottom left/right so will leave that to others

I would like to take some off and replace them.

For ex., I don't need the "show desktop icon."

And on the right side, I don't need the battery indicator, etc.

ibiblio is slow, about the best thing I can say about it is, it teaches patience and the downloads are usually correct.

hey

to remove the desktop icon open your file manager, make sure all hiden files are shown, and go to /root and edit as text .jwmrc-tray and comment # or delete this line

Code: Select all

<TrayButton popup="Show Desktop" icon="mini-desktop.xpm">showdesktop</TrayButton>

Tray button not wanting to leave

I commented out the lines, but programs are still showing up.

How can I get Files to always show hidden files ?

Thanks.

Can you try different puppy versions and compare the download speeds between them on the same website ?

You need to restart jwm.
Hidden files are shown in ROX by clicking the eye "hidden", and it depends on the file manager.
