Re: Solved the sound problem.

Booted the computer with Akita-13 disc(last version that the sound worked) and found that the ALSA Wizard had also gone to zero, repeated the process. Same with B11 and B12. Booted from Akita-14 disc and yup the levels in ALSA Wizard were all at zero and again no sound until I raised the analog levels. . How it affected the other saves files is a mystery that I'll have to figure out later. My sound card is pretty ancient, a Creative Audio 0106 Sound Blaster but it had worked without running the ALSA Wizards in Akita, Betas 9-13. Weird,eh?
damn you wary 5,5! ... or akita ... whoever was at fault! As i mentioned above, im no sound expert, i think i could force fixed volume levels in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit but not sure if it's wise! (i think not...)

Partsman, if you wanna try some compiling: buildpet is for making compiling stuff easy..

if anyone wants to test it, i have updated buildpet a little bit (thanks Tman and iguleder) ... install the pet... then to use it, install the devx from the repo, and then in a terminal type

Code: Select all

cd /usr/share/buildpet
that will put you in the directory you need to be, in there are all the build scripts..

then you type something like:

Code: Select all

buildpet fun/freeciv.bp
and hopefully freeciv should be compiled for you, and packaged up as a pet, no fuss... kinda pointless as I just did it, and added freeciv to the repo, but anyways, there are many different build scripts...

Note: freeciv would be a much bigger pain in the neck to compile, but akita already includes most SDL libs, as does the akita devx... if not on akita, you'll need sdl, sdl_gfx, etc, and their DEV pets, installed before freeciv compiles..

to see them build scripts (all apps you can compile), you can type the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

find /usr/share/buildpet/
.....

Or you can try 'src2pkg' from the akita repo (also needs the devx obv), it's a bit more complicated but 1000% more powerful... you must do `src2pkg --setup` in the terminal to make it work...

Correcting my mixup

#864 Post by LoboGrande »

It wasn't Alsa Wizard where I changed the volume levels, it was Alsa Mixer under the Multimedia Directory. Retrovol won't work until you go into Alsa Mixer and adjust the analog levels. Only the analog levels seem to have any effect in both Alsa Mixer or Retrovol with my CA0106 sound card.

The sound levels aren't being saved after rebooting either. Royal pain in the tuckus.

GTK1 apps added to akita repo (click 'Update' in PPM):

- Amaya-8.52, in Internet, 1641K ( a web browser /editor)
- gentoo-0.11.57, in Filesystem, 211K (dual pane file manager)
- gentoo_NLS-0.11.57, in Filesystem, 200K
- libimlib-1.9-i486, in BuildingBlock, 119K

I'd like to add more gtk1 apps, but can find any (i did find PULP, and might rip some out of there...) I'm looking for a good gtk1 ROX, mtpaint, burning prog, whatever...

I'd really like to ditch ROX in favor of PCManFM...can I do that? Will my machine run much slower?
I think it could be a better user-friendly file manager for those who want a "windows like" experience...

ROX is fantastic once you learn a few keyboard shortcuts for various features (note in akita, you can change the ROX hotkeys by highlighting a menu and simply pressing what u want)..

But anyway, Akita has the following file managers in the repo (all in 'Filesystem' category):

4pane, emelfm2, gentoo, qtfm, spacefm, xfe, thunar and xplorer ...

SpaceFM is based on PCManFM, and is very user friendly, and very good, customisable etc... None of them will be slow on your PC..

slimhunter, if you are using the ROX desktop (aka 'pinboard', standard puppy desktop icons, disabled in akita by default) you can right click on the 'file' desktop icon, then go to 'Edit Item' and change the command it will run from rox to whatever else you like...

EDIT: Also Wbar is in the Akita repo, that is a good alternative to the ROX desktop - i keep forgetting to add it to Akitas default setup, which I will *prob* do for the next release. It'll only add like 50kb, akita already has imlib2...

BTW, if anyone can recommend another file manager, I'll happily add them to the akita repo..

Added to akita repo:

http://akita.scottjarvis.com/pekwm-0.1.16-i486.pet (200kb)
http://akita.scottjarvis.com/pekwm_DOC-0.1.16-i486.pet (8kb)
http://akita.scottjarvis.com/pekwm-themes-0.01.pet (400kb)

I have compiled & modified pekwm-0.1.16-i486.pet, it includes a custom pinstall and custom pekwm menu and it's preconfigured to generate a puppy menu, in an 'Applications' sub menu.. and the pinstall script will do this for you on first install (thanks to aragon)..

This build had everything enabled - supports xinerama, all img types, etc ..

..............

I also created a new build script for buildpet which will build the above packages, including the custom menus and pinstall scripts...

Also... The next akita will have WMSwitcher 0.20 - which will have added support for pekwm (akitas already has a custom version that supports all WMs in the akita repo) ..

Thanks for upgrading Firefox. FF-13 ran very choppy on the TUV4X. It's much smoother now. Chrome 7 won't let me go to Yahoo's Login. I prefer Iron to Chrome. I've been running Lucid 5.2.8 on a separate partition on this machine with Iron 10. Very stable and runs very smoothly on this old machine. You many want to add Iron 10 to your browser installation suite. Seems to work better than Chrome 7 on old machines especially when streaming video like YouTube.

Not running Iron 10 under Akita

#872 Post by LoboGrande »

I tried to install Iron 10 .pet from Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 over to Akita 14 but it wouldn't open. I got the idea to run Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 on this old machine from another member who was running it an even older machine. I just downloaded it for the Lucid PPM and it run just fine in Lucid Puppy 5.2.8. I'm not Puppy savvy enough yet to build .pet files. I'm a plug and play guy who just tries to see what works well and what doesn't.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-lucid

My machine's cpu is P3 1.4 ghz Tulatin which was the last of the P3 line and the Asus TUV4X mobo recognizes 2gb of PC-133 memory. I'm running an 8x AGP card(NVidia GeFroce 6200,DVI out) even though the mobo only supports 4x AGP, it seems to work just fine with a Dell 15" monitor.

Using Conky as a performance analyzer, it will go to 100% usually for a second or two with FF-13 or Chrome 7 and then come back to about 50% when not changing pages. There are certain things it can't do with FF-13 or Chrome 7 like Facebook chat under Akita or SeaMonkey under Wary 5.3. Wary 5.5 doesn't work nearly as well as 5.3 in this machine. Neither work as well as Akita. I tried Puppy 4.3.2 version 3 and it didn't work as well as Akita. My plans are to use this very reliable old beast as shortwave radio scanner with software defined radio and as a Free-to-Air Satellite receiver. I've gone through 3 budget build P4, socket 478 computers in the last 7 years but my old P3's have outlived them all. They just won't die! This TUV4X is my favorite though. It boots up to Akita faster than my Asus 1015PX dual-core netbook does with Windows 7! Lucid 5.2.8 performs well on it but not as good as Akita. I guess it's kernel is just too new for the old beast.

You'll have to give me time to build a kind of 'sandbox' for Iron - I'm thinking of doing this to get Unity games working in Akita, as well as newer Chromes... (It needs a newer libc)...

Firefox-17esr, in the akita repo should work fine with facebook chat etc..?

Glad to hear Akita is serving you well :D

BTW, are you using OpenGL? Did you install the Nvidia drivers for your card from the repo? It *should* be this one (I think): NVIDIA-185.18.36-k2.6.25.16.pet.. If the desktop won't load after you restart X, it is probably the wrong driver, try another one ;)

And whatever programs you need for your radio plans, I'll be happy to try build and package them up for you, if you can point me to their homepages/source etc ... You might see how useless I am at compiling and stuff like that ;)

I've compiled and packaged Xfce4-4.10 for akita, but it needs tweaking, and it has broken icons in many places... Any help or ideas on how to fix the icons would be great.. I still prefer the xfce-minimal pet in the akita repo, but Xfce4 is popular...So i would like to get a nice xfce4 package in the repo.. Help with fixing the icons will be appreciated..
....

Also, considering lots of interest in 'Adrives' (a separate SFS that holds most applications), I am thinking about making an ADRV sfs for the next Akita, which contains all the programs that require X to be running, plus X itself... (Or is that not what an Adrv is for??)

The problem is, I have no idea how to do it! :roll:

I could then release a framebuffer only Akita ISO, without any of the X stuff, which might be nice, as Akita includes working framebuffer, cli_net, elinks, doc2txt, pdf2txt, xls2csv, mp, mocp, transmissioncli, movgrab, vlc_nogui, streamplayer, Pkg (cli pkg manager), etc ...

...I could even just throw in 1 static Xvesa and a static jwm from techno or goingnuts, so it would be the best of both worlds...

I installed a Nvida Driver pet but I can't remember which one off hand because I had to switch video cards from a GeForce 5200 VGA to the 6600DVI to match up with my DVI only Dell Monitor. Prior to my last P4-478 crapping out the TUV4X was hooked to a 2009 Emerson 19" TV. Couldn't get it to run higher than 1280x720 without the TV saying format not supported. Had to set the TV to the full screen or I'd get black sidebars when using it as a monitor even though the TV says it will support 1920x1080P.

The Ham Radio and Satellite thing is because I'm trying to move out as far away from large urban areas as possible but still keep an ear to the ground with what's happening around the world. These old P3 computers will use 1/3 the power of a newer P4 desktop, still perform basic computer functions like web surfing and streaming video while allowing for expansion cards like my satellite TV and radio cards.

I think these newer single board(Atom,ARM) computer are just dandy but they subsitute hardware for software ie apps which is fine in a Swiss Army knife sort of thinking but you can't do anything with them terribly well. I'd like to see some sort of interface eventually between single board computers and older harder ie a PCI board that will use the P3 Mobo as a power supply with an HDMI output.

Somewhere amongst the P4, socket 478 wreckage, I've got a working 2.8 ghz /533 FSB CPU. This was the last of the Intel single core CPUs till the ATOM came along. I think I'll buy an empty case and cobble together a box to see how fast Akita will run. My 3.4 P4 dual core CPU didn't care for Akita as compared to Lucid Puppy 5.2.8

Thank you for all your outstanding support work in keeping vintage computers as viable working machines.

Xfce-4.10 in Akita

#876 Post by sc0ttman »

Here is a screenshot of Xfce 4.10 compiled in Akita, not yet ready to put into the repo, has the following issues, would love help with fixing them, already bugged Jely96 enough!

Xfce issues:

- Xfce MIME editor does not list all mime types, only a few from /usr/share/mime
- Xfce Appearance tool doesn't work - use gtk-chtheme and edit /root/.gtkrc-2.0 and /root/.gtkrc.main
- no desktop icons (not compiled with vfs support) ... pup-volume mounter will be used..

thunar issues ( I really wanna fix these!!!):
- not using system mime actions :
- not enough default left OR right click options in thunar (for most file types)
- cant find where to disable the thunar root warning

Here is a screeny of the default setup, I updated icons, fixed menu layouts, added some thunar actions, changed panel settings a bit, etc:

Image

This pet is about 2.5mb, and will have the following dependencies (~ 1.5mb in total):

icon_theme_xfce-0.1-noarch-akita (800kb)
glib
dbus
dbus-glib
linwnk
libpam
libffi
polkit
tumbler

Hello,

Sorry I'm late.

/!\ Remove Root message.
Download thunar source, extract it.
And edit thunar/thunar-window.c to remove running-as-root message.

I edit like this :

Code: Select all

  /* check if we need to add the root warning */
  if (G_UNLIKELY (geteuid () == 0))
    {
      /* add the bar for the root warning */
      infobar = gtk_info_bar_new ();
      gtk_info_bar_set_message_type (GTK_INFO_BAR (infobar), GTK_MESSAGE_WARNING);
      gtk_table_attach (GTK_TABLE (window->table), infobar, 0, 0, 0, 0, GTK_EXPAND | GTK_FILL, GTK_FILL, 0, 0);
      gtk_widget_show (infobar);

      /* add the label with the root warning */
      label = gtk_label_new (_(""));
      gtk_container_add (GTK_CONTAINER (gtk_info_bar_get_content_area (GTK_INFO_BAR (infobar))), label);
      gtk_widget_show (label);
    }
And make. And make install. :)
I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite Linux distrbution on the Citadel.

  /* check if we need to add the root warning */
  if (G_UNLIKELY (geteuid () == 0))
    {
      /* add the bar for the root warning */
      infobar = gtk_info_bar_new ();
      gtk_info_bar_set_message_type (GTK_INFO_BAR (infobar), GTK_MESSAGE_WARNING);
      gtk_table_attach (GTK_TABLE (window->table), infobar, 0, 0, 0, 0, GTK_EXPAND | GTK_FILL, GTK_FILL, 0, 0);
      gtk_widget_show (infobar);

      /* add the label with the root warning */
      label = gtk_label_new (_(""));
      gtk_container_add (GTK_CONTAINER (gtk_info_bar_get_content_area (GTK_INFO_BAR (infobar))), label);
      gtk_widget_show (label);
    }
And make. And make install. :)
Thanks that's what I was looking for...

But this is the one really annoying me - How can I get the normal ROX mime settings working in the Xfce mime editor and more important, normal system mime actions working in thunar...?? I had it working at one point, but rebooted, re-installed the xfce package it the settings were lost!!

/usr/share/mime is mostly empty in puppy... it is mostly empty in akita, anyway...
