How to use Fuji-Xerox Docuprint 203?

#1 Post by oigle »

I have 2 DocuPrint 203 with full cartridges.
They are simple mono laser printers, but
I can't find a linux driver on the XEROX site.
I have tried every driver on the slacko 5.4 version of cups
So I 'print to file', which works 90% of the attempts, then copy to a stick, transfer that to XP and print.
I come into some friendly ribbing for using Puppy.
I know there is a reference to 'wrappers' somewhere but I can't find it.
Perhaps this version of the XEROX printer must be a Australian aberation.

Also is it possible to 'print' / 'print to file' all the printer types in Cups so I could carry it when purchasing.
I remember using that approach to modems a long time ago.

Here is a Fuji-Xerox driver. When you run CUPS, there will be a new Make category called FX.

But this is an old driver, so I don't know if it supports your Docuprint 203.

Please report back.

Not to step on rcrsn51, but I want to comment on drivers such as for your printer.
I have a Xerox Docuprint P12 lazer printer and the drivers for it, both windows and linux, do not fully support the printer.
The printer is capable of 600dpi according to the specifications and the drivers only support 300dpi.
Also, as of Windows Vista and up, the driver is no longer listed.
I ended up using an HP Lazerjet II driver for the printer that still only does 300dpi in windows.
I have not tried later HP drivers yet although I think a later HP Lazerjet driver model that supports 600dpi might work fine.
I will not know till I try it though.

So my suggestion would be to try an HP driver that has specifications that are close to those of your Xerox printer.

I welcome comments on my thinking here.

Here is the driver. See the instructions above.

If It doesn't work, I have another version. Or you can try 8-bit's suggestion of using a Laserjet driver.

I seem to be a very slow learner when it comes to the forum.
The driver has gone again because i took too long to get it, i think.
Oh well
I will look again in a day or two
sorry for the frustation i am causing

I have given 8-bit's hint a go and tried one of the laserjet 2,3,4,5,6, and a smattering of others and although I have up to gotten 92% done I haven't had any output so far
regards

I did a web search for your printer and found a blog that states that the xerox P8e driver should work.
One thing I had problems with on getting printing to work with some printers was that the firewall was blocking it and I cannot remember what I did to remedy that.
But trying the driver may be worth a shot.

Also, you may try these links to see if they help.
The first one is here.
The second one is here.

And you can find more by doing a web search.

Thanks 8-bit but hint #1 didn't work,
I have pluged it in as a line printer on LPT1 with parallel cable-still no good. Other devices work on the USB so that ought be OK, but you never know.
So I tried to boot
puppy pfix=ram
so the firewall would not be enabled- no good.
Then i suspected that Cups -Maintenance-print test page may have had something wrong as it reports 65% done and continues until it is all done which is different. That is a bit desperate - didn't work.
I will try Hint #2 today but I am dreading the cmd line stuff.
I dont know what it means and, although I have tried to learn it, I forget it fast.

As I thought, this driver does not work well with new versions of CUPS.

But 8-bit's first link should work. Are you connected by USB?

Start the CUPS web interface and click the Administration tab.

Click on Add Printer.

Your printer should be auto-detected. Follow the screens until you get to the one that shows lists of Makes and Models.

Select Xerox and Docuprint P8e Gutenprint.

If this doesn't work, please state the exact point where it fails.

I sometimes use localhost:631 ( your recommendation ) but I do just as you say.
Cups reports that the printer and driver are correctly installed.
Print a test page fails, although the green printer LED flashes and the heater fan runs.
8-bit has a hint #2 where the author recommends that the printer and driver be uninstalled before you start. I am unsure how to do this but unlplugging the USB and plugging in the parallel ( or vice a versa) seems to acomplish it.
I am going to attempt to include a USB screen dump and a parallel one.
Then you should see what I see.
