Yes, I have had excellent experience with Exprimo on several older and newer laptops and netbooks.
I thought I read that there was one version specifically optimized for older computers and thought if Exprimo had trouble with drivers or performance a different Puppy may meet the need.

Gateway M675PRR laptop Subject description: Won't play DVDs |
|
I did get the older and less-sophisticated of the two laptops to work and the children in Honduras to whom it was delivered are very pleased.
The trouble with the better of the two may be maybe something about the interface of Exprimo and the chipset of the Gateway M675PRR laptop?
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/M675/3501731sp75.shtml
The DVD drive handles the Linux CD OK.
After trying various video settings I was able get as far as playing the video but it fails on sound no matter how many settings I have tweaked in every place I could find!
WDYT?

Edoc. It can be that the audio chip is not supported in squeeze based dpup. You should try other Puppy versions.

I did try an older version of Lucid, no joy.
I'll try a search of the audio chip & Puppy and see if the general search engine brings up a match somewhere.
EDIT1: Sigmatel® Soft Audio 6-channel AC97 revision 2.3 codec (STAC9758)
EDIT2: This was apparently addressed back in 2004! A patch to alsa-deiver 1.0.3
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-laptop-and-netbook-25/linux-on-gateway-m675-145832/
I tried looking in Puppy Package Manager and there are a ton of alsa-related files but I have no idea which, if any, would resolve the problem.
WDYT?

That patch was incorporated to the alsa-driver in version 1.0.4
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
You could try the suggest rows there:
Quote: | Here's my /etc/modules.conf:
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-midi |

At the top of /etc/modules.conf it has this seemingly contradictory statement:
Quote: | #I left this file here for old-times sake. 2.6 kernel uses modprobe.conf.
# Note, the script /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit*
# calls script /etc/rc.d/rc.modules*
# to load the modules.
# modprobe* references this config file, modules.conf.
#v432 rerwin: This file is still used by Conexant-modems to retain major-number selections for the experimental range (240-254). |
Toward the bottom of /etc/modules.conf is:
Quote: | #Puppy 1.0.0, added Alsa support...
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss |
Which means that these three are missing from what you have:
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-midi

A small mysql in Exprimo? Subject description: LAMPP, XAMPP, Hiawatha |
|
I just need mysql in Exprimo.
XAMPP for Linux seems to be the most-simple way to get mysql ...
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html
But XAMPP seems larger than necessary for the purpose.
Should I still prefer it for minimal install hassle?
Has anyone installed it successfully in Exprimo?

Using a USB Tuner? |
|
This all sounds like a giant mess if I try it.
Anyone understand what he is saying who can offer a paint-by-numbers set of instructions?
Or even better a PET or SFS?
Quote: | Yes, the RTL-based usb stick will work in Linux using gnuradio and gqrx.
Typically to get gnu radio you download the gnu radio build script and run it, which grabs source
code from various locations and compiles it for you. Other apps, like gqrx, are build on top of gnuradio | .

As a follow-up I did end up loading XAMPP.
The next adventure is in MySQL.
After executing a CREATE USER and a couple of GRANT lines it refused to "quit" so I had to Ctrl-C out - which I presume lost the prior work.
Any idea why "quit" would not function in MySQL?

Tray Disappeared! |
|
The bottom tray disappeared.
I have been trying to get some Debian-based python, MythTV, and other stuff in place (I hate Debian) and suddenly the bottom tray was gone.
I tried the suggestions in threads here on the Forum re. jwm but none of them worked to restore the tray.
Any suggestions, without losing everything in my squeezesave.4fs ?

PPM Links Broken in Exprimo? |
|
All of the MythTV links appear to be broken in Exprimo 5x15
I have updated the database and that did not solve the problem.
Any ideas, please?
I really need to be able to load MythTV now that I am finally past the MySQL install & set-up adventure.

Upgrade Path from 5x15? |
|
Has the Exprimo-series terminated at 5x15?
While all seems well at the moment I imagine it will become necessary to upgrade at some point.
Don't need bleeding-edge, all 9 computers here are laptops & netbooks, so good management of various chipsets & hardware is important.
What should be on the short list of alternatives?

Hi edoc,
do you mean perhaps a Wary-based dpup? That would certainly get my vote - a LTS Puppy base for +PIII-era laptops and desktops, with -in cases where the PETS and SFS' are not available - OOTB integration for "recent" applications in the extensive deb repository. glibC and gtk2+ library support would be the biggest bugbears there, I imagine? I think that pemasu has been super-busy not only with BK on Puppy5 issues, but also with his new Wheezy-dpup puplet http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=648583#648583. I agree with his approach for the latter - let the user do all the personalisation - but I'll be waiting to see any kinks ironed out before I migrate from my beloved 5x15 which I use for work on a daily basis
It's a tough call - when does a developer choose to shift the kernel base upwards and risk the time shoe-horning the lagging libraries into it so the bleeding-edge applications are happy with it (see also this comment from popov http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=696299#696299)? And not loose the loyalty base of users with their recycled hardware (me) and their dreams of bleeding-edge applications?
(Looks like I'll have to finally learn how to compile from source, myself :0)
