scsijon, since you have nouveau with drm compiled into the kernel, I reckon put the nouveau driver in, it works on 85-90% of nvidias out of the box, especially ones less than 5 yo. There are a couple of older cards that don't quite work right but vesa works for them. Vesa has never worked properly on my card in any distro, so don't worry about that too much.
School computers nearly always have intel graphics in my experience. (cheaper?)

This post was after trying to test on newer Nvidia hardware.........never was able to start X..... Vesa was a total no go.
Just tried with the older card on my main Linux box.......still total failure ....no x..
Code: | VGA compatible controller : nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev c1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
|
Just boots to a black screen with a "monitor out of range message" whether a regular pfix=ram boot or pfix=nox.
Generally use "nouveau" even with the older cards....... works better than "nv".
While posting this, booted on an Intel box.........straight to a desktop.
Also, echoing Mick....... Vesa does not like any of my Nvidia chips either.

I had another go at installing the proprietary nvidia driver and it's
working okay so far but doesn't show up in the hardinfo report.
EDIT:I got mage2 running on another pc that couldn't get to the
desktop (Geforce 430 card) by copying my mage2 directory to a flash drive and
copying to the hard drive on pc2, then running grub4dos from slacko and
rebooting to mage2.
At the command line ran xorgwizard and chose the nvidia driver.
It's working well
EDIT:Adding glxinfo from puppy package manager fixed the hardinfo report:

ok folks,
Please give me till the weekend and i'll build a new mage2-0011 with some drivers and a couple of tweeks in.
Mick, some of the school computers were laptops of various ages and models including nvideo and they worked vesa ok, I just plain forgot to put the nouveau driver in the build list after initially testing.
David, I shall also add a radeonhd driver in, hopefully it will fix your problem.
thanks to all so far, that was why I said ' knock wood'

G'day scsijon,
The proprietary ATI driver that worked with my radeon HD5450 card in my Mage frugal test was a pet file: amd_fglrx-12.8-x86_precise_3.2.28.pet.
I did this install as an upgrade from a poor but working vesa display.
This ATI driver ran well, but when I rebooted after installing this pet, I got the videowizard text and no way to get to X. That was about my last test.
I had the feeling that the videowizard was part of the problem as it could not find my radeon card by default. All recent Pups have gone straight to their radeon drivers and given good X displays.
Good luck with sorting out the video issues...and with the hot weather down there.

mage2-0010 driver workaround |
|
I have built a small pet containing the nouveau, nv and radeonhd driver for those with mage2-0010 installed and needing them.
I think I have also sorted the monitor detection problem with the second (ddcprobe) pet and it should also work for other puppies with similar problems.
I'm trying to sort out a background problem (if it is actually a problem or just something we don't use in puppy reporting a error) so mage2-0011 may be a day or so into next week.

I've been using mage2 for a few days now and it's working well.
I found a couple of problems:
Adding applications from ppm sometimes adds csh files to the
/etc/profile.d which need to be deleted.
I couldn't get Broadcom wireless working on a couple of laptops (b43),
but I have a linksys usb wireless adaptor that does work (rt73 usb) so
I was able to use that.
I haven't done a lot of testing, having fun adding stuff though and
I've found that mage 2 is very stable, it's the pup that I use most
Thanks

BillToo, (and others) a couple of pets two messages above this one to install please, they should fix monitor selection and missing driver problems, Can someone try please and let me know results.
BillToo, ?what were the packages adding the csh files please, I need to see why that is happening.
I have yet to start with the broadcom issue but check earlier (~p9) as peebee has dealt with this problem for me, and will come in again after 0011 if needbe.
All, I'm still trying to sort a couple of background tasks out and why they are appearing/running. At present, I think it's part of the systemd stuff and that should not be active. 0011 will only come out when they have been dealt with it.

They showed up after I installed kshisen (I'm pretty sure), 01micko fixed this problem in slacko 5.4 so he knows the fix.

radeon & ati drivers still no go for 1600x900 Subject description: xorgwizard seems inert if not broken? |
|
G'day scsijon,
No joy, I'm afraid.
Quote: | a couple of pets two messages above this one to install please, they should fix monitor selection and missing driver problems, Can someone try please and let me know results. |
I have a desktop with a (cheap) 1600x900 LCD monitor.
I started Mage-2.0.0.10 with a clean frugal and vesa at 1280x1024.
Installed your xorg pet and then tried the xorgwizard.
The radeonhd was now listed as a driver in <Choose> but the resolutions offered were not correct (no 1600x900).
Attempts to start X with the radeonhd driver failed at any tried resolution.
<Probe> doesn't find the right driver either.
One try using the ati ati option from the wizard <Choose> started at 1280x1024 but trying the resolution changer wizard option - 1600x900 was listed for this non-vesa 'success' - killed the graphics (black screen).
Once the graphics fail, attempts to recover with the videowizard fail ('xorgwizard' at the command line gets boring after while when nothing happens). Delete the Mage save file and start over with vesa is my only option.
I think it is the xorgwizard that is not quite right? - a radeon driver that works with other Pups is being listed by the wizard but it seems to then ignore the driver or doesn't have the right settings for it?
Sorry I can't help any further.

Hi scsijon
I know you are already responding to reports of video problems, but I thought I ought to tell you my experiences on my very standard HP laptop with Intel graphics. I've loaded lots of puppies onto this laptop and the latest Mage2 is very unusual in its behaviour.
Basically, there are no boot text messages displayed - the screen is "lit" but blank grey during the entire boot sequence.
It is only by sheer serendipity that I guessed/suspected that the initial boot sequence might be sitting waiting for input so I pressed return a few random times after sitting with the blank screen for a bit and I did eventually get to a small vesa desktop where I was then able to run xorgwizard to get correct geometry.
Having got the system running by luck rather than good judgement I did discover that the b43 firmware was missing. I copied the firmware from another puppy and was able to make a wifi connection.
Every boot sequence is similarly blank but does now eventually reach a working desktop and a working wifi.
Regards
peebee

thanks all
David- You may need to use the x11-driver-video-fglrx driver in the repositry as well for your particular card, I was hoping to leave it out as it does have some large dependancies and mage2 is large enough as it is. However, first can you run the sys-info application (under system-status and config) and attach it to a reply so I have something to work with and see if anything is obviously missing. Don't forget to open it and remove the personal info before attaching.
Peebee- My bad with the b43, I shall have to look at that, as I thought it was in. Maybe with some of the other firmware extractions barry did not so long ago to woof added back in the last of the 'wierd' problems will go away, I shall look at what was removed. Everyone is reporting some sort of video headaches and yet I am getting nothing here, can I have a sys-info report from you also please. And as your the only one who as reported laptop problems so could you also add the /tmp/xerrs.log please, I suspect it's actually the setup screen your not seeing and with 0010 xorg was set for a manual start (expecting responses), with 0011 it will be automatic as the problem related was fixed with the ddcprobe update.
All- It seems that the only thing left is video related so I shall setup a couple of my testboxes with other cards and see if I can duplicate anything. I thank everyone for their patience with this, but it is why we did need to broaden the testing at the beta stage.
Any additional testers are asked to attach a sys-info to their replies so I can group any problems and fixes.
On the other hand I have managed to start shrinking the final package by removing a couple of unneeded and unwanted mageia multi-user background tasks and that has freed some cpu resources also. Finding those has made me consider at least one more we don't have in puppy normally, but is needed for the braile devices I am supporting. I am considering changing it from automatically starting on bootup to being a manual start the first time as it does poll the ports and related interupts and adds about a 2% overhead, or alternately (and maybe the better) extracting it to a pet and making it a 'pre-requisite' for braile instead.

G'day scsijon,
Running in Mage-2.0.010 with vesa at 1280x1024.
Ran sys-info (Lighthouse version) and gz file attached.
Will see if I can find and try the fglrx driver you suggest. My try with another fglrx driver before got good graphics (1600x900) but re-booting dropped me back to the xorgwizard which did not work (no X).
Hope it's cooler where you are - it's been raining here in Sydney .
David S.
PS: Success so far: found the radeon driver in the Puppy Package Manager by searching with 'radeon' then installed it.
Using the xorgwizard, <Probe> did not list the correct resolution so I picked 1400x900 but when I typed in 'xwin', I got the present correct set-up of X at 1600x900.
I've attached an updated sys-info report for your learned comparison.
I am yet to re-boot to find out if this display persists.
PPS: display driver/resolution good on re-boot.
Loaded up my sfs and only problem was LibreOffice-3.6 (from an sfs) won't load and use directories for templates, temp, mydocuments from my mounted data partition - reverts to /root for these which is no good.
