Precise 5.4.2 only gives 640 x 480 screen resolution.Solved

Can any one help me please ?
I have been given a Dell Optiplex 745 Small Form Factor with an integrated Intel Q965 graphics controller, Intel Core 2 6300 cpu and 1Gb of ram.
I have connected a Philips 170S5FS 17" monitor to it.
I am writing this post using Precise 5.4.2 running off a usb key.
Okay, so here is the problem, the ONLY screen resolution I can get is 640x480.
The monitor will support up to 1280x1024 and the Intel Q965 supports anything from 640x480 up to 1920x1200.
So why can't I get the resolution to set at 1024x768 which is my preference?
Xorgwizard says it is using "Intel" driver but only shows 640x480 on "probe".
Some of the "old" versions of Puppy are fine i.e. all the 4 series are ok
as are "Legacy OS2" and "Legacy OS4 Mini" and Wary 5.3 (but only if I use the "i810" driver).
So what is going on here ?
On what is a fairly modern computer it seems that only the older Puppies want to play nicely !

You might try editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and put the resolution you want. Restart X and see if it works.

Best to make a copy of the existing first so you can easily put it back

Also, can you install the i810 driver yourself and try it with the xorg.conf file with the resolutions you want?

On my favorite laptop (Inspiron 700m), I've always found
i810 driver to be best.
I use 1024x768 resolution on it.
None of the latest Puppies with 3.xx kernels are capable of
using that driver or making a usable 1024x768 resolution.
Attempting that res. at best gives a screen with screen
narrowed severely and distorted.
I much prefer Wary 5.3 over anything else; both for the res. problem and overall lack of problems.

To "Bruce B" attempted editing xorg.conf but no joy.
To "rjbrewer" I think you may be right! Wary 5.3 is an excellent os and runs perfectly in any situation I have tried.
