Can I use my USB FM transmitter in Puppy?

#1 Post by yum-cha »

Hello folks

I have been enjoying Puppy 1.07 for a couple of months, and tonight I tried out the Puppy1.08r1. ALSA is the big news for me, i'm excited. I have a SoundBlaster PCI soundcard which works fine, as usual, but I also have a LineX FM transmitter device which behaves exactly as a USB soundcard. See http://www.myfmstation.com/html/linex_usb.html for more product details. I want both devices running simultaneously so that I can listen to MP3s on the Out house radio and in the living room. A few months ago I had it up and running on ubuntu using some generic usb soundcard driver, it didn't need any specialist drivers since it apparently conforms to generic USB standards.

USBview shows this device as 'Burr-Brown Japan PCM2702' (the name of the CODEC) and puts it in red (presumably showing that it is not correctly enabled). AlsaConfig wizard doesn't detect it. So then I looked at Barry's "HOWTO install driver modules for your PC).

I sort of half understood the beginning bit, so I tried

# modprobe -v snd-usb-audio

Now USBview shows the 'Burr-Brown Japan PCM2702' in black. Hooray.

But Alsaconfig wizard still doesn't see it. I tried restarting and doing it all again. Hmmm...

If someone can help, then I can heartily recommend the LineX product as a real useful and cheap device in the home, much much better sound quality than those dinky little iPod stylee FM transmitters and a range of 30-50 metres!

all best, Charlie

Puppy's ALSA setup utility might not accommodate configuring multiple sound cards, but ALSA will definitely support multiple sound cards. For a full hard drive installation, configuration would be achieved in /etc/modules.conf.
For the liveCD I think you would use Puppy's ALSA setup to configure the first card, then this command (?) for the USB device -

modprobe snd-usb-audio index=1 enable=1

Now your next problem might be volume control. I'm certain that alsamixer would control a second audio device, but I'm not sure about xtmix.

Thankyou :-)

I tried modprobe snd-usb-audio index=1 enable=1 ...
but, once again, the usbview decided to be happy with the usb device, but the device didn't power up and make noise. Hmmm..

I take your point that ALSA can handle multiple soundcards, but maybe alsaconfig tool can't. Yet. I welcome more suggestions, if anyone has any brain waves.

I finally decided to dig out the LineX usb fm transmitter and give it a go with the new puppyoffice203CE.

I am now listening to some sweet lynard skynard (simple kind of man) through my stereo!!!!!

This is what worked for me:

"modprobe snd-usb-audio" in a console
opened my favorite player xmms http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Multimedia/xmms-1.2.10.pup

went to preferences on the xmms menu and under the "Audio I/O Plugins Tab", chose "ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin (libALSA.so)" from the drop down window for Output Plugins

hit the configure button and the Burr-Brown usb device was an option.

Choose the Burr-Brown device and it showed up on mine as "hw:1,0" so I also chose the "mixer card" 1 option.

I restarted xmms and viola!!! The dogs went scrambling to another room as the sound boomed through my 12" Polk Audio's

By the way, the LineX transmitter does work in winblows but I never could get rid of a high pitch wine in the background.

It's chrystal clear with puppy.

I love this puppy!!!![/img]
