I have a little repository of apps for Wary ->here

The majority of the those apps/libs, I have compiled myself. Some are from the Wary5 reopository and there for convenience.
They were compiled in my Wary-5.1.1 remastered derivative. All apps except, kernel-specific apps should be compatable with newer Wary, as long as the dependencies are met.

A lot of the apps and buildingblock libraries are newer than the ones found in the Official Wary reopository.. well, they are newer for the time being.
If I don't lose interest, I will try to update that repository from time to time.

wary vs racy

#63 Post by scsijon »

downloaded both rc1's and installed with the same configs and on the one box.

added flashplayer to wary as it's not there by default

tried out on my satellite connection

racy was clearly the better, both for access, screen changes and downloading with seamonkey left unmodified.

also got fbdev module missing complaint in the log file.

Also,
barry was talking about wanting a secure linux somewhere, have a look at Tail Linux. It looks like the apps are secured rather than linux itself, may be worth a check.

Woof bug: xorgwizard changes touchpad settings with Xorg 1.9

#64 Post by npierce »

This is actually a Woof bug, not a Wary or Racy bug. But since Wary/Racy development goes hand-in-hand with Woof development, and since there is no Woof thread, I figured that this might be the best place to report it.

The bug is in xorgwizard, and only affects Puppies that use the Xorg X server version 1.9. (That was the case for Slacko 5.3.3, but I don't think any Wary or Racy release uses that version of the X server.)

Possibly no one will ever again build a Puppy with Woof that uses that version of the X server, in which case this bug would never cause a problem again. But it might be nice to fix it, just in case.

For details see: Running xorgwizard changes option settings for synaptics touchpad driver.

(Note: Although the xorgwizard bug shouldn't affect Wary or Racy, the above report also mentions a minor bug in flsynclient. That bug would, of course, affect any Puppy that uses flsynclient.)

Minor error in Packages-puppy-wary5-official.

#65 Post by npierce »

There is an entry in Packages-puppy-wary5-official for udev_DEV-167-patched_t2-w5. The entry indicates that this package depends upon udev version 167 (dependency field says "+udev&eq167"). But there is no entry for that version.

Code: Select all

udev_DEV-167-patched_t2-w5|udev_DEV|167-patched_t2-w5||BuildingBlock|52K||udev_DEV-167-patched_t2-w5.pet|+udev&eq167|rules and executables for handling kernel uevents|puppy|wary5||
There is, however, an entry for udev version 167-patched_t2-w5.

Code: Select all

udev-167-patched_t2-w5|udev|167-patched_t2-w5||BuildingBlock|484K||udev-167-patched_t2-w5.pet||rules for handling kernel uevent messages, plus executables to monitor and respond|puppy|wary5||
So I am guessing that the entry for udev_DEV-167-patched_t2-w5 should be:

Code: Select all

udev_DEV-167-patched_t2-w5|udev_DEV|167-patched_t2-w5||BuildingBlock|52K||udev_DEV-167-patched_t2-w5.pet|+udev&eq167-patched_t2-w5|rules and executables for handling kernel uevents|puppy|wary5||

PPM dependency version question

#66 Post by npierce »

Is it my imagination, or is the version not checked if a dependency is already installed?

It's working well on this netbook.
EDIT:I added vlc which works very well on this netbook and I find that links 2.7 web browser works pretty well on this tiny screen.

Wary and Racy 5.3.90 (5.4beta1), Sept. 28, 2012

#68 Post by Monsie »

I am currently testing Wary on my main desktop, an eight year old Pentium 4, 2.8 mhz cpu, 2 gb ram, nVidia fx 5200 graphics card. I am running a multi-session DVD and hence pupmode=77 I used the Video Upgrade Wizard so that I could run 1600x900 resolution on my monitor.

I notice that the link to the on-line manual for Geany is still broken. See my post over here to fix this issue. Note that version numbers for Geany has been re-worked in the past year and it is now at V1.22 While this is newer than what is used in Wary, the on-line manual is still useful and obviously better than having a broken link... That said, I am wondering if Geany could be updated to the present version, as Wary seems to have the system requirements from what I can see.

Going through my test boxes with both racy and wary, I have found a problem with one box (a Acer SK) when set for the Intel i915 driver.

Video Details are:
Chip description:
2.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82946GZ/GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
oem: Intel(r)Broadwater-G Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS
product: Intel(r)Broadwater-G Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0

X Server: Xorg Driver used: intel
X.Org version: 1.11.0
dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (270x203 millimeters)
depth of root window: 16 planes

Problem is that I am getting random lockups, stack overflows and our old friend the "black screen of death". I do also notice that the Broadwater chip is not listed in the i915's chip-list.

However if I run as vesa video I have no problems with either wary/racy.

I might also add that the previous wary53 gave no problems on this machine with the i915 driver.

I'm still playing with the eeepc 701.
I've connected a 1440x900 monitor to it,swithched back to jwm,
added a wireless keyboard and mouse, and found some new wallpaper.

This netbook is more useable now, still mobile if need be but that's unlikely :)

woof2 on racy 5.3.90

#72 Post by scsijon »

decided to use racy ilo wary53 since the partition had selfdestructed due to some soft ram.

Wanted to get back to building with woof and to test it I did a dummy wary5390.

was ok until building
firstly got a few errors on .so files without execution rights which I fixed
then I got 2 problems and the quicksetup coming up in the middle.

The ROX-Filer desktop text defaults to white with black shadow, but this is
not best for some light backgound images. ENTER only to keep, but if you
want black text press any printable key then ENTER:

Also, ROX-Filer defaults to 'DejaVu Sans 12' font for the desktop. To accept
that just press ENTER. If you would prefer bold text 'DejaVu Sans Bold 12',
hit 'b' key then ENTER, or type in a full font specification (ex: Mono 14)

Would you like to delete all the 'modules.*' files in lib/modules/3.2.28?
This means that 'depmod' has to be run at first boot, but that is usually ok.
These files occupy 600KB - 2MB uncompressed.

gtkdialog4: symbol lookup error: /usr/X11R7/lib/libXrender.so.1: undefined symbol: _XLockMutex_fn

Certain Xorg drivers have a bad reputation. Here you can choose to move them
to /usr/lib/x/drivers-alternate so Xorg will not use them, instead
will use the generic 'vesa' driver (or other more appropriate driver).
However the Xorg Wizard has a mechanism to move any drivers in
'drivers-alternate' back to 'drivers' directory.
Here is the list of drivers currently in 'drivers-alternate':
 nv radeonhd
Press ENTER only to accept this, or
type a space-delimited list of drivers
that you want to be in 'drivers-alternate':
everything else was ok and it built, but failed to start past the automatic mouse setup.

However so far it seems ok if I use wary5.3.90. I shall proceed with a few other tests to make sure it's ok otherwise I shall go back to wary 5.3

woof fixes for problems listed above

#73 Post by scsijon »

The first problem in the Code section I found was caused by woof2's rootfs-skeleton/etc/xdg/menus having a text file as puppy-calculate.menu instead of a link from puppy-business.menu, I have no idea why but when replaced by a link it dissapeared.

The " ifconfig: /proc/net/dev: No such file or directory" looks like was that the new puppy had just not been setup with an external connection yet so the file did not exist.

The "gtkdialog-splash", and on bit I have no idea!

The "find: `/lib/keymaps': No such file or directory", bit is that I don't have a keymap pet in my build. (?MY BAD)!

The "xrandr: symbol lookup error: /usr/X11R7/lib/libXext.so.6: undefined symbol: _XLockMutex_fn
gtkdialog4: symbol lookup error: /usr/X11R7/lib/libXrender.so.1: undefined symbol: _XLockMutex_fn ", I have no idea at present! It doesn't seem to affect anything so far, but...

I'm still getting Quickset starting up in the build, but i'm just closing it for now with the top-corner X (kill) button!

And after doing a fossil update this morning i'm now getting a working build (sort of) except for a couple of new problems relating to shutdown and poweroff. It won't and following the two wmreboot and wmshutdown files just gives me a headache as they just refer to the links that refer to them again! One for poor barryk I think!

I eventually got the video to work after adding a few extra driver files labeled as "add widescreen resolutions to video bios, intel video chips only" in the pets, even though i'm not using a widescreen. I did notice that the dri driver for the 946gz had appeared so it must be needed. I shall chase which pet down next and try removing the others as i'm trying to shrink not expand.

I'm tempted to keep the Racy 5.3.90 for now as it does give the appearance of running faster!

Hello,

I have a Dell D430 and IBM X60.

This is what happens no matter the puppy slacko 533, precise and racy 5390.

When I have the devx sfs after reboot or powering on the computer The screen shows pausing and than can't find that puppy's sfs file and using puppy on usb Which I now am using to post this. I can't access the partition that I have my frugals in because of the devx.

So now I will have to reformat that partition and start all over again.

Has anyone else experience this problem?

Frugal install of Racy 5.3.90. Like Precise, Racy has the "mostly black
screen" bug. Since the toolbar is there, you can do Menu - Shutdown -
Restart x server to get a desktop. Test machines here are all older P4
cpu, RAM from 512 to 768 meg. The black screen bug seems unrelated
to any particular video hardware. Black screens occur randomly at
startup.

Racy tends to connect (wireless) on the first try, stay connected and
start up connected thereafter. My machines use rt2500pci (Linksys PCI
adapter).

Racy works on a machine here that Precise doesn't work on at all (hangs
during startup).

So Racy is less buggy on my machines than Precise, for whatever that
comparision is worth.

I was able to use PupClockset-1.9.2.pet on Racy as I did on Precise. IMO,
it would make for a nicer OS if the 12 hour clock option was available
out of the box.

Wouldn't booting from the CD, putting in "puppy pfix=ram" at the prompt and then deleting the offending SFS once you're at the desktop be a little less drastic?

The partition never showed up on the desktop to delete the sfs.

Sorry for the off-topic - well, not so off-topic. Is there a utility to make DVDs with menus that works on Wary? Something like ManDVD or DVD Styler?

I still need a browser that works on a K6-2 500, the bundled version of SeaMonkey bombs out with an Illegal Instruction error.
