iconfinder and YASSM |
|
Updated to 5.4.1 from 5.4.0.90 all went well.
But, when I tried to run iconfinder, it seemed to hang while compiling the icon list. When I broke off the program, I got an error message saying that the list file was probably too large.
Checking /root/.icon_finder revealed a list file weighing in at 4.28 MB, which did seem like quite a lot!
I examined the file and found the source of the problem - iconfinder had left my local machine and had started to download the addresses of all the jpg's on my server. This is why the program appeared to hang.
This unexpected behavior was caused by an unintended interaction with YASSM. iconfinder is configured to search /root among other directories and YASSM mounts the network shares in /root/YASSM - hence the entire network is included in the search rather than just a few local directories where icons are likely to be found.
This problem did not arise earlier when attaching shares with pnethood, which mounts under /mnt/network.
The problem can be solved by adding: Code: | -path /root/YASSM -prune -o | to line 115 of iconfinder after "find $Paths".
Alternatively, just run iconfinder for the first time before attaching the network drives with YASSM .

Please can someone advise whether a simple upgrade via the PUI is recommended/ liable to be successful, preferably folks with actual experience? |
Full install upgrades of retro-Precise on 700M and MSI with
no problems.
Grub legacy is now functioning correctly.

What an interesting side-effect! How big a share did you have mounted with YASSM?
One of the rationales for putting the mount points in /root instead of /mnt has to do with using YASSM in a true multi-user environment like Fatdog. An unprivileged user gets a full set of permissions on the mount point if it is in his home directory.

LTS puppy |
|
Howdy Fellas,
In light of BK's mention that "However, longer term, working toward a next release, is up to members of the Puppy community. I will not be coordinating further releases."...Precise 5.4 was supposed to be an LTS version, correct? Seems I remember seeing it compared to the 5 year LTS term of Ubuntu's Precise?
Not trying to grate here, but just got a friend going on Puppy (Slacko 5.3.3) , and they checked the forum, noted the new version number, and then emailed over the quotes above. I explained that this was common with Puppies (ie, Lucid with Playdayz, Slacko with 01micko), etc) that BK sometimes gets them rolling, and then someone in the community will take over the LTS updates. That's...right....right?
As always, I truly appreciate the efforts of every developer in the pound on the users behalf. Playdayz created a true LTS with Lucid, 01micko has made Slacko an incredible and ongoing distro, and none of us would even be here without BK. Thank you.

I was wondering the same thing.
Anyone going to take over as prime developer?

Yes, pemasu, the bar has color when the jwm theme is changed. I changed the jwm theme to "Flat-grey" and now the title bar is always grey.

With, for example, "Flat-grey", the bar colour changes from darker grey to lighter grey when I focus on a different window. So it works fine for me.

true
Themes are what they are, some subtle and others more obvious. In any case, not (usually) a bug per se.
Funny, I've always rather enjoyed the minor challenge of themes I'm not all that thrilled with

Right, the title bar changes from very light grey (inactive) to medium grey (active). for the setting Flat-grey.
