when i made the openshot.pet for precise i found that there were differences between the openshot.deb installed in puppy and the same .deb installed in ubuntu precise, and i manually copied the differences over to make the puppy openshot.pet work.

i thought that there must be some sort of parse script in the synaptic package manager adding the extra links and folders to make openshot work. I was wrong! the scripts are actually inside the .deb.

if i unzip a .deb in ubuntu or debian i see an extra 'DEBIAN' folder which contains install scripts that modify the installed packages. but if i unzip it in puppy i don't see this folder. (I can see this folder in puppy if i install debians 'file roller' program from the PPM and use that to extract the .deb)

whilst this doesn't matter for the majority of .debs we install, it does matter for python based apps, and the failure to run these install scripts, is why python apps haven't been working!!!

as an experiment on a fresh install i installed openshot from the PPM, which won't initially work. i then ran this script from, a python.deb

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
set -e
# Automatically added by dh_pysupport
if which update-python-modules >/dev/null 2>&1; then
	update-python-modules -c
fi
# End automatically added section
and it worked!!!

the install script requires 'python-support' and 'python'...

there are other scripts inside the .deb , but this seems to be the important one. and it would be good if it ran everytime you installed a package.

EDIT experienting some more, i found that this script doesn't cover everything. each python.deb will probably need to run it's own install scripts

I updated the puppy package manager this morning, then I tried to download a few problems.

At first it was clamav but then all the programs in the ubuntu repositories.

There is no problem with the noarch & precise repositories.

I am being conservative with package installs till The service pack 1 patch maybe comes out later. I want to install lm-sensors, hddtemp, locate or mlocate, plus other small kb applications. But can wait till certain things posted in this thread (I have read all the pages) get sorted. Otherwise. Running Fast. Running good.

No problems with touchpad, Wifi, PPM, CPU Frequency Scaling Tool.
This Netbook is pretty Linux Friendly though.

Edit: Went ahead and installed a few things (.pets) that I have installed in Macpup 529 (I forgot about that  ). Pets listing

Code: Select all

# cd pets
# ls
hddtemp_0.3-beta15-52_i386.deb mlocate-0.24-i486.pet

At last, a spare machine, spare disc and a well-behaving dog.
Tidings of great joy:
Image
If that works, it shows a FULL of retro transmitted via the beastly Cohiba dongle. There were no difficulties installing to HD, no problems activating the wifi dongle using SNS and no issues getting a decent screen to work from. Testing can now commence.
If the picture didn't display* or is the wrong size please can one of the gurus advise as I don't usually use pictures on Fora.
Oh yes, an old P4/2.66G/378M.

*It didn't! But it does now. Some guys around here are pure gold. Thanks a $m, F.

To temporarily stop it:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/rc.firewall stop
To keep it from restarting:

Code: Select all

chmod -x /etc/init.d/rc.filewall

I installed the firewallstate-1.7-full tray applet.pet from Lucid which seems to work fine.

"Features" in Precise Puppy

#192 Post by minimalist »

A big THANKS to everybody who contributes to Puppy development!! However, it must be impossible to make everything perfect in a new release. Here are some "features" I ran into:

The Grub installer goes to the point where it asks for which drive to use (/dev/sda1), then says 'working' and stops. Grub4DOS works fine.

After installing some packages from Ubuntu, like hpjjs (HP printer drivers) all desktop icons turn into "yield signs" (the triangle standing on its tip) and the icon text and text inside dialog boxes turns into rectangle characters. Can't read any text any more. The main menu remains intact.

Has anyone seen this? I did not install a different video driver, just regular built in 1200 X 1000 or whatever.

So, it is best for me to use Precise Puppy out of the box and not install any packages. This is also the idea of small and fast...

Thanks again. I wish I was a programmer or Linux expert and could help!

This is a known bug. You should be able to fix it with

Code: Select all

ln -s cp /bin/cp-FULL
After installing some packages from Ubuntu, like hpjjs (HP printer drivers) all desktop icons turn into "yield signs"
Installing things like printer drivers from Ubuntu is risky. Check out this source instead.

The pupradio in Precise is old. Some of the channels fail now too. If 0.16 was in it would have worked. I am up to 0.17 now to fix the opera bug, Posted here.

A kind and patient contributor showed how to attach a picture, repeated under. The final step to include it in text requires extra skill that I will work on when time permits. Hope folks like it. The wallpaper was kindly supplied a while back by another resident artist.

& see previous page.

distorted display

#198 Post by colorpurple21859 »

Frugal install to usb key by copying files extracted from iso. Dispaly distorted like an analog tv with no signal in both X and console on laptop with amd a8 with ati 6700m hybride grapahics. Have tried the following with no success: nomodeset xdriver=vesa vga=normal video=800x600x60 noacpi pfix=ram pfix=nox.
Lucid worked on same laptop without any problems
Usb key works great on computer with phenom 9550 and geforce 9300 graphics card.

Woof-built Puppies continue to have the old cups_shell front end. A simpler, more nooby-friendly version is attached.
