Version 6.14 is available as a static compiled package.
It should work on most Puppies. I found it worked well.

Just make sure there are links placed in an executable path
like /usr/bin/

Not working on Slacko 533. Not sure what Don570 meant by his last sentence (links?) but I downloaded the file to root then extracted to usr/bin hoping that is what he meant. When I click on any of the gear shaped icons, it just flickers and nothing happens. The readme files and online wiki have no suggestions so hopefully someone here knows what I should be doing. Thanks in advance.

Hi Aragon. I tried calling the testdisk_static file from urxvt. The screen changed to black, at the bottom of which was: '[create]'. I tried erasing the testdisk directory and re-extracting to ~/testdisk.. Tried calling again, this time the screen bottom said '[quit]'

The suggestion from next link is that there are missing dependencies.
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TestDisk
I see now it gives a .pet file so I'll give that a try. There's also another app being suggested here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 508#661508

Edit after installing .pet and rebooting. Testdisk is now in utility menu. Opens a window similar to above with >[Create]. Anyway, I tried clicking on the deffective drive which mounted properly this time (whew). A new folder called FOUND.000 is listed but nothing it it. Windows might have done that.

I'm still looking at this black screen and try highlighting it-- lo and behold, the screen has a lot to say so I try restarting with following results:

one uses arrows/enter to select.
select create log file
select sdd1
select partition table type (from choices: EfI, Hume\ax, Mac, None, Sun, xBox),
select 'none' despite note advising not to since it's a flash drive.
select 'analyze'
Results partition start end size in sectors
P fat32 0 0 33 1017 42 12 7821280 no name

select 'Deeper search' - press enter
it's doing something but very difficult to follow on black screen. After many minutes:

Following partitions can't be recovered
ext2 887 104 23 1024 28 54 1048576
ext2 887 104 25 1024 25 56 1048576

Fat32 4004mb/3818mib
I select 'quit' after it seemed finished.

Found a log file in root. Mostly lists of numbers but at end says:
Write isn't available because the partition table type "None" has been selected.
New options :
Dump : No
Cylinder boundary : Yes
Allow partial last cylinder : No
Expert mode : No
TestDisk exited normally.
Maybe I have to retry setting dump = yes??

No difference except more detailed info appended to log file, can't find any dump file. Last line reads

Partition table type (auto): Intel
TestDisk exited normally.

I'll try again this time selecting Intel as the type. But it seems the resulting dialog was nonsensical so I gave up and didn't allow any writing since it really seems to think the drive is a hard drive not a flash. Arrrg.

Maybe testdrive is no good for flash drives?
