Thanks you to try LXpup, I hope to best meet your questions. :)

Question 1 : You must go in Lxpanel preference, and reduce the size of icons, and space will be subdued.

Question 4 : I must admit that I do not know any other, but if you have something to offer as a replacement, I will be delighted to integrate it.
The default LXDE session manager needs Hal, which is fastidious to get it working.
hi Jejy69,

thanks for your response.

i was referring to the system tray icons (network, battery, volume, partition view) in my first question. please see attachment showing what the system tray looks like in barry's precise compared to your LXPup (i tried LXPup before barry's :D ). the LXPup screenshot also shows there is no way to edit System Tray properties in Panel Preferences.

carolina, by elroy and geoffrey has a nice shutdown dialogue, which may not work for other puppies, but your magic may convince it to work in LXPup. please view the attachment.

Unlike slacko_lxde, I don't see any "windows switcher" in precise lxde to download "mate 1.4"

How did peebee get mate 1.4? I like mate but how do i get it in precise_lxde?

Hello !

@ yerc1

I stand by what I said, ie right click on the bar, 'Panel Settings', 'Geometry' and put icon's size = 29.

Thanks for Carolina shutdown, I'll ask to Elroy and Geoffrey if it's possible to use it.

Thanks for the link to windows chooser. I must have missed it in Jejy69's website.

I have down loaded it and will try it out tomorrow. I hope mate will not mess up precise with lxde. Lxde is a good base environment to run back to. It is light, comfortable to use and allows easy customizations to some degree. All praise for this marvelous work and idea of Jejy69.

jejy69 - your website lists your Abiword version as 2.91 - does this version have the ability to read and write docx files? Have you tried it for that? thx

Hello greengeek,

I have not finished updating the site, unfortunately, abiword 2.9.1 is available in Slacko, Precise maintained version 2.8.6
Nevertheless, I will try to see if using the docx format is possible.

I soon finished preparing KDE 4.9.2, and I tried docx format as soon as possible. :)

Hi Spandey,

In fact, I suspect that this phenomenon is due to my score. The file system has an impact on the file size, the real size should be of 190MB but once on hard disk size is 180mo.
Strange is not it ? :?

The package Cinnamon is ready 95%, however, it will have to wait for Gnome Shell, it works during a session! After rebooting, it gets stuck on fallback mode, with the impossibility to use the mouse and keyboard. forced reboot savage ...
I guess it comes from Udev... :?

#271 Post by peebee »

Hi Jejy69

USB memory sticks don't appear for me in the file manager in Precise Lxpup....

The 2 screenies show:
1. the usb stick detected in Precise-Mate
2. the usb stick not detected in Precise Lxpup in the file manager but will mount OK with pmount

Cheers

Newbie Questions

#272 Post by okwellthen »

Sir Jerome:

You apparently have earned deserved respect from what I can read here on this forum... Wise beyond your years it seems!

Your Weebly site is PERFECT -- the simplicity and efficiency is refreshing to use/see! (having myself used Weebly in the past)

Thanks to all who might take the time to answer my sincere newbie questions...

slacko:

-is there font smoothing

-why after downloading other desktop (through wmchooser) does it not switch to the new desktop... and every time press (xfce for instances) it only asks to download (again) instead of switching?????

-why does slacko only see approx. 3 of my 8gig of RAM???

precise or slacko:

-which is more stable

-which is better to trust for long-term FULL-TIME use (I understand repos are different)

...once again TIA !!!!

[ I am used to using larger more power-hungry distros (Pear, Mint, Kubuntu, etc.) and want to better understand if puppy is good FULL-TIME use OS ]

Hello Peebee !

Thanks for the report, I will see.
Maybe, restartx after branch the USB key ?
I add problems with Pup-Volume-Monitor. I added a launcher at startup, in / root / startup to launch the process. :?

Hello okwellthenm and Welcome ! :)
You apparently have earned deserved respect from what I can read here on this forum... Wise beyond your years it seems! Wink

Thanks you ! :D
It is true that Weebly is very convenient for those like me who do not know to program Html Css ...
It seems to me that you are the first to give me an opinion about the site. Thanks.
Thanks to all who might take the time to answer my sincere newbie questions...
I'll try to answer your questions at best. :)
There is never a stupid question, I imagine that come from heavyweights like ubuntu, Puppy must be disorienting.

-is there font smoothing

Slacko and Precise have font smoothing thanks to Lxappearance, LXDE's application.
Lxappearance -> Font tab.

-why after downloading other desktop (through wmchooser) does it not switch to the new desktop... and every time press (xfce for instances) it only asks to download (again) instead of switching?????
Normally, after downloading the package and its installation, a dialog appears to show the command to type.
It does not restart automatically, simply because I do not have the knowledge necessary to integrate command in the script.
I will ask advice to solve it. :|

-why does slacko only see approx. 3 of my 8gig of RAM???
Slacko, has got 3.1 kernel no PAE. This module is not present, the ram is not fully utilized, as a 32bit system.
However, the PAE module is present in the Precise version !
All the ram will be taken into account in this edition.
For your 8gb, it is better to use Precise.

-which is more stable
They are both. However, in view of your configuration (8gb ram), I advise you to use Precise, thanks to PAE module and the recent kernel 3.2. Personally, I use it for my PC : 6go ram, 1go Ati video graphic card, and I3.

-which is better to trust for long-term FULL-TIME use
For now, I think it's Precise.
Why ?
-Recent Kernel 3.2.29
-KMS enabled ( graphic card usable directly without driver from AMD, Nvidia ).
-All libs are updated
-I work on this version, and I will bring some new features like VLC 2.04, Gthumb 3, Kde 4.9.2, Mate 1.4.1, Cinnamon 1.6 etc.
So many updated softwares.
You can of course propose a software, if it is possible I will create a package. :)

I hope I have satisfactorily answered your questions :)
Don't hesitate ! I'm pretty available. :)

Getting LxPup's System Tray Icons Closer together

#279 Post by mikeslr »

Hi Jejy69,

Keep up the great work.

yerc1 asked a couple of pages ago whether it was possible to get the LxPup's system tray icons closer together. So far no one has responded.
I don't know if this will work in LxPup. But in Precise Mate with Mate-lx-1.2 installed I stumbled on the fact that if you left-click the tray icons on the left side they can be dragged closer together. The icons on the right side don't appear to be movable. However, setting time 12 hours & seconds seems to push the other right-side icons together, especially if an app is opened.
