DVI-VGA adapter work!

#741 Post by LoboGrande »

Dirt cheapest solution is DVI to VGA adapter if you're going into the PCI port on a newish low end LCD TV. What type of AGP/PCI-e card does it use currently? The newest card I know for sure with Svideo output is the NVidia 7300 PCI-e cards that also have DVI output. It would have to be something fairly old, 6-7 years at least. S-Video Out is also pretty crappy quality for gaming or DVD playing even with CRT's. One of the reasons they went to DVI for LCD monitors.

I can tell you from experience that those older cards don't support HDMI ie DVI to HDMI cables with Emerson HD LCD TV's. You'll have to go DVI-VGA or component inputs on the TV. Resolution is limited to 1024x 768x75 on the Full Screen setting only on the TV. You'll get a 'format not supported' message if you try higher resolutions on the TV then it will reset back to 1024x768. You'll need a newer card with HDMI output with an HDMI cable to the HDMI port.

cheers sc0ttman,

i got it streaming with my normal vlc, but playback wasn't smooth, it kept stopping like it was buffering.

i may try your vlc. do you know if your vlc gtk supports dvb tuners?

VLC-GTK will auto append something like &fmt=18 to the URLs... That might be the difference...

No idea, you can see the compile options in the vlc_nogui 1.1.9 thread...
I dont know *anything* about DVB, but would love to get that working in VLC-GTK too...

That's my point - I have no gfx card, only the onboard gfx... With the standard VGA out off the mobo...

My TV has S-video and HDMI ...
I need to get the VGA output of my PC into my TV, cheaply...
Even a gfx card might be overkill...

sc0ttman, what you need is properly called a scan converter.

Go to eBay and search "vga s-video". You're looking for something like this --> http://www.ebay.com/itm/PC-MAC-VGA-to-T ... 23239c6a9c

Don't get that specific example unless you want to pay for the boat -- it's in Florida!

...or, if you really do want to use the HDMI plug, search for "vga male to hdmi female converter" and ignore the many many models which have a female VGA connector -- which is almost all of them! (The ones you want appear to mention "tablet" in their title...) Here's one --> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-HDMI-Male-t ... 3376146fe6

Again, don't buy that specific one. It comes on a sampan from China!

...one last idea. A common connector on British and European TVs is the SCART connector. This is the only case where you can use a passive cable -- all the others will fail or damage your equipment, because the signal protocol is different! Here is a VGA to SCART connector in the UK --> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scart-to-VGA-SV ... 4cff5bbaa3

Of course you want the "SCART to VGA Male" option. 2pounds 40pence and shipping sounds quite reasonable to me for that ;) :p It's in Greenford, UK, so you should be safe ordering it.

Hope I've been helpful!

Yeah, what Starhawk said!

Going to run into a stinkload of problems if it's an older box or laptop trying to get it to run on newish HD capable TV unless you use a converter box and passive cables. Your on-board GFX is likely limited to some much lower resolution than your HD TV runs at. You won't be able to use the whole screen. That's what happens when I run an s-video cable from my GeForce 5200 to my Emerson HDTV. I'll have to wide black bands on either side of the screen.

There are several VGA to HDMI converters out on the market. The big question is how much are you will to pay? One other thing when buying a VGA to HDMI Converter is what will version of HD will your TV support? 720P, 1080P maybe even higher? Match your converter to the highest capability that you TV will support otherwise you might be disappointed with your set's performance.

Oooh, I see Akita has nearly 200,000 views...

Anywyay.. Thanks for the info guys, I think I will just keep it simple, and go for a cheap low power, low profile card - although I know not all low profile cards fit in the optiplex SFFs... Prob a budget ATI Radeon something... the most I wanna spend is about £25 quid inc delivery. Actually, I could get a cheap old PCI gfx card, just for the DVI/S-video out, £7, but I'll go for something that isn't worthless for 3D/HD...
----------------------------

About the next Akita:

it will mainly have lots and lots of updates to VLC-GTK, plus better right click options for images, plus updated apps from other puppy users, such as the latest PupMenu, Pupsnap, Pburn, FFMPEG Vidcap (by Tman), etc and also updated apps in the PPM...

There is also a right click option for images called 'Start Slideshow' - you will be able to use this to have rolling wallpapers that change every 10 minutes or whatever you time you choose..

pavrecord will also be included, although I can't seem to get it to do anything except record buggered up audio... Probably Akitas old ffmpeg, but VLC-GTK 2.6 works as a great little screen capture/file converter now anyway...

Yet to find an elegant solution for using nobus in the PPM, with Firefox etc... Can't work out how to make sure the real dbus is not overwritten by nobus, if nobus is installed at a later date..

It seems Flash 11 might also need to be updated... Is it me, or is flash-get failing with Flash 11 download and install again...??

Also, I tried Technos mupdf-static-gtkdialog1-GUI-xdotool-thingy, it crashed on me when trying to search text within a pdf... Will try to get this working right, it's a nice GUI for a great PDF viewer...

And I still wanna get Tmans 'buildpet' thing working, with a nice big set of apps that can be compiled... I have found a lot of the build scripts are out of date though, would be nice if the build scripts had the options of trying to get & build the latest versions...

I'm still hoping to get finished translations for /usr/bin/akita_setup....

Finally, I am unable to get around the compiling error message that Akita spits out every now and then about xrender.pc not found... The file is there, include/pkconfig files are fine, I have even copied and moved stuff from /usr/X11R7 to /usr, still nothing... if anyone can help, it would be great. I think epdfview will give this error... Try it using Puppizard...

re: mupdf
I found the bug, xdotool does a strstr to find the window, so I just renamed the gtkdialog --wmclass to uPDF (along with the rest of the app) so that it didn't get found by xdotool when it looked for a window with "mupdf" ... the latest version has working search and should be stable, but I need to find out the gtkdialog4 version of gtkdialog1's chooser for opening files.
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

pavrecord for Akita

#751 Post by mcewanw »

sc0ttman wrote:pavrecord will also be included, although I can't seem to get it to do anything except record buggered up audio... Probably Akitas old ffmpeg
Having read your comment, I was curious so downloaded and installed Akita. I discover that the existing pavrecord does indeed have some issues with the ffmpeg version in Akita: x11grab doesn't work from pavrecord and nor does the preview and video player ffplay, because of the ffmpeg version. However, it only required a slight modification to the existing pavrecord to allow it to work with that version of ffmpeg. I will post a special version for Akita tomorrow (and hopefully therefore for some other puppies should they come with that ffmpeg version.

On my machine, I do find that the webcam driver provided by Akita doesn't work so well with either of my webcams compared to that in say Slacko-5.3.3. Probably related to the older 2.6.x kernel in Akita. Both my webcams are recognised and work well in Slacko, but one of them gives a very distorted image in Akita and though the other one displays okay, the frame rate is very slow. So that is likely to be the main problem for most users - the older kernel not supporting the webcam very well. If it works in some other app like Xawtv then it will also work in pavrecord, but not otherwise. x11grab/screencasts will certainly work in the modified pavrecord I'll upload, and sound should be okay... but on that topic:

I don't understand your comment that pavrecord produced "buggered up audio". pAVrecord does not use ffmpeg for most of its audio - it simply, for example, uses arecord and lame for mp3 and arecord alone for wav, so it is just alsa in that case. If alsa is therefore working correctly, I cannot understand why the recorded audio should end up garbled (I haven't tried sound with Akita on my test computer as yet because it is late night and my family are sleeping...). But please let me know in detail if you can what the exact problem is with the recorded audio so that I can try and address that too.

Not much I can do if arecord or lame is broken on your system though. However, I'd be grateful if you would check your alsaconf first and perhaps check other recording apps in Akita, such as Bacon record and mhwavedit to see if sound is always recorded garbled. From what I've read Bacon uses the same arecord-lame commandline, though I've never tried it to check that and from experience if mhwavedit records okay, so would the new precord-1.8.4 and pavrecord uses the same audio recording code. I'll check audio recording on my test system with Akita and let you know the result.

pavrecord for Akita

#752 Post by mcewanw »

I have now produced a modified version of pavrecord for Puppy 4.x series computers (tested as fully working on Akita on my Pentium M 1.6GHz 1GB RAM machine).

I did not have to modify any of the sound recording code in pavrecord at all in fact, just some of the ffmpeg parameters to suit Akita's ffmpeg. Note that everytime I rebooted Akita, however, I needed to run alsaconf before it would fully recognise my soundcard. Without doing so, alsa wouldn't record properly, and thus pavrecord couldn't work. Obviously alsa must all be set up correctly and working fully before using an app like pavrecord. You can find the Akita tested version here if you want it:

Hooray for mongrels! I'm sure what you mean really is that you've probably generated hybrid vigour in the Puppy stable :) I'll have my little squad of testers on this very intensively, but alas not for at least a fortnight.
Many Thanks!

I've been waiting awhile to see a new version. But I don't have an old machine anymore, and this was my fav puppy420-based puppy.

I tried akita on my Dectop with an amd geode and most jwm icons were missing. i don't recall if they were xpm or png, but whichever it is was likely compiled for 686 so it would likely fail on other 586 machines including the surfboard and gecko edubook. This is the same reason it won't boot ubuntu (missing cmov instructions)

Interesting.... Is there anything i can do about it? Does the same thing happen with other puppies on that PC?

I could make a version with a newer kernel, they seem to work OK, except that I can't seem to get OpenGL working with them.. For example, if I replace the pup4 kernel with the wary511 kernel, the new pup uses the wary511 kernel, but the nvidia drivers for that w511 kernel don't seem to work... That really bugs me, stops me updating the kernel ... I use the method from the 'switching kernels' thread... Maybe there is a better way??

As a side note, Akita does seem to be a bit of a pain the ass to get OpenGL working, unless you got an ATI/Nvidia card... It might have something to do with Xorg pkgs used from w5, or maybe I'm just dumb - I can't seem to get the 'xorg_xorg_dri' pkg from the pup4 repo working, nor the equivolent stuff from the wary5OLD repo....

most official t2 packages were built with --build=i486-t2-linux-gnu, which sets -march=i486, so those packages work. The problem occurs on secondary compiles where the packager simply does ./configure && make && new2dir make install without setting --prefix --build --sysconfdir or --localstatedir. It probably just needs a recompile with -march=i586 or lower added to cflags, but I no longer have a handy copy of a devx for this series to check it. I'm sure I will find others at some point.
