Hey puppyt, thanks for the support.

I know I can make more organized howto's. In the army as a medic I got CPR instructor trained and CLS (Combat Life Saver) Instructor trained by the unit for teaching Battalion down 7 different 50 -60 man classes. Then later in my carrier I retrained and became the Task Force armor for another unit. Had to teach weapon qualification.

Public speaking is not an issue. However I should not have just winged it like that. next time I'll make myself a note card on the other screen to keep myself on track. Lay out a lesson plan like i did when I was instructing.

I left the video as is because its shows how to fix a mistake in a build. IE the Exec="foo" issue in the *.desktop file.

I'm back in College now so time is limited. I'll try to get out a video on making a pet with new2dir and if that fails ./configure, make, make DESTDIR= make DESTDIR can help if your ending up with an empty new2dir as some pets are a pain to be made. Its not that hard just a time hog to slow down and explain.

Some things will never be in the realm of a 15 to 30 min video. Some pets are a nightmare to make.

I'm thinking about doing a video series on gtkdialog, and zenity. Kinda like the videos bucky does on The New Boston. http://thenewboston.org/tutorials.php

Just been trying to explain to the wife the significance of your input here, within the broader context of what makes the Puppy Linux Community such a great place to hang around in
This is the truth.

I love it here in puppy land too. People aren't stingy with there knowledge.

The only thing I recommend to any one looking to start doing any thing outside a Linux stock Desktop application (making pets, config .deb packages, making a dialog) is to take one class online or in collage for one programming language.

I'm a total puppy / linux noob. The only thing that has saved me is that I took Pascal, Java, Java Script, HTML back in the day (1996-1999).
You may not remember all the code but you remember how code works. You know a function, you know a While loop, if statements, and most important Comparisons.

There are allot more than that but if you have a good Idea of how the above work in a few languages when you see code else ware you head does not do a mobious strip maneuver.

Good luck puppyt I'm sure you get it and be providing how to's to other puppy fans in less than a year.

@ meeki your Docear sfs works perfectly in my LH64 - Big Thanks!

I hadn't meant to deflect you from your other goals when I mentioned Docear earlier, so I didn't provide the link (http://www.docear.org/) - I'm very grateful that you took the trouble to track it down *and* compile the latest in PET and SFS when you have so much else going on. Docear is still getting minor kinks worked out (e.g., importing and organising user's PDF annotations) and is going through lots of updates recently. So, when Docear gets a bit more mature I'll use your tute to update the pets. Your contribution does all that I need it to do, so is a great research tool for LH64 (and other pupplets).

Sorry TaZoC and all for slightly derailing the LH thread further, gotta respond :)
meeki I *thought* you might have had professional experience in tutorial settings - well, you might have made some bloopers but your natural delivery was excellent, and turning it into a tutorial-within-a-tutorial, on-the-fly made it more memorable and effective. Don't take it down! The asides you make on java pets and sfs/pet compatibility are also very useful points for us noobs, too.
I reckon it would be useful to bring a LightHouse/64-bit Puppy perspective to the realm of 'how to" tutorials already covered here http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TutorialYouTube. I feel that LHPUPrecord would be a big gain in this regard, in due course...

Good luck with your studies meeki! I'm back in college now meself, so I appreciate your time with this.

(erm I did Basic and Pascal in High School back when MicroBee's were the "In" thing, and haven't really touched the field of programming with a barge pole since - but I quite agree, the discipline that a (or any) computer language teaches you, is a big help when you need confidence to get "under the hood" in Linux)

Was catching up on some reading on Barry's Blog and I found this post about PPM: http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02985

Will those changes be able to get worked into the final LH64 release that you said you were working on? I personally dont need it, but I do think it would help those less skilled in Linux. Since you're release is already so user friendly, I was hoping it'd get added (if you had time).
Good question, I'll add it to my To Do. I was waiting for all the updates to PPM to settle before inclusion. Might not make into RC1, but hopefully after that.
Update: I'll be working on the new XFCE for LHP64 later tonight... hopefully things will go smoothly. :)

EDIT: You told me before but Im daft and forgot... what is the dir in LHP that shows all the installed packages? The one where each package has a corresponding file identifying it.
/var/log/packages, same as in Slackware. I think I'll put a symlink to that directory in /root/.packages.

Ideas for now or later

#184 Post by Pete22 »

Hello to TazOC and others:

The developers for a puppy named Carolina to be released Oct 5; has the
latest version of the XFCE desktop working in puppy as well as enhanced
Xfce options via GUI not offered in Saluki, or any other distro Puppy or
otherwise. I know it is x32 bit so perhaps their work will not be helpful
to you. However, some times just an idea can spark someone's creative
juices, so I thought I would mention it. You may want to contact Elroy or
Geoffrey for more information .

I also like the improvements that Jemimah made to the Puppy Package
Manager, It looks for dependencies and if they are not already installed,
it looks elsewhere to find a copy and downloads them when possible
Very handy, However, Jemimah has "Linux Burnout" right now so I would
contact Elroy or Geoffrey for more information about that if you are
interested.

I know that LHP x64 has a much greater capacity to do beautiful screen
savers. Is there a way, or could there be a way created to also create an
ongoing random picture slideshow screensaver that uses pictures from
files or folders that I designate?

Keep up the wonderful work you folks are doing.

Pete

XscreenSaver 5.14 (stock screensaver app in LHPUP64) will do just what your asking.

Mode: is stock set to random. It will cycle through the screen savers in the list checked below that are not subdued and have a check in the check box.

Out of the ones available in the list the following will do images from a folder of your choice:

Carousel
Decayscreen
GLSlideshow
Jigsaw
Photopile

After unchecking/checking the ones you want or if one select mode: only one click the Advance tab next to Display modes

Uncheck grab Desktop images

Now check : Choose Random Image:
Brows to a folder of the photos you want to display and now your using photos of your own choosing.

I thank you all for your efforts. :D

Screensaver of images in custom folder

I'd like to add a little to meeki's excellent post, that you might want to change the Mode to 'Only One Screensaver' (image-1 below)

...and then on the 'Advanced' tab enter the path in the 'Choose...' box, or click Browse to specify the folder, (image-2 below.)

The box in image-2 says '/usr/share/backgrounds', but you can change that as desired. As meeki noted you can uncheck 'Grab Desktop Images' to exclude your wallpaper from the screensaver.

Whom ever made (./configure) LibreOffice-3.6.1_64_en-US.sfs

THANK YOU !!!!!

All the functions work now and it does not lagg out for 30 seconds at random times. Also the spell check works!!

LibreOffice-3.4.2-x86_64-2.sfs was a flop for me

My class work can continue..... Well back to my lab report.

Amazon movies

#191 Post by Pete22 »

tazoc wrote: Try this Pet: http://www.lhpup.org/update/L64-514/Sys ... 6_64-3.pet

I adapted it for LH64 from a couple of Slackware64 packages at
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... kware64/l/
and included the missing scsi.h at /usr/include/scsi/. (Will also add scsi.h to the next devX.)

Hope that helps,
TaZoC
This is great. I tried it and it eliminates the specific message caused by the Hal problem.
However, today when I tried to watch an amazon movie, flash keeps crashing. Youtube files are fine.

I uninstalled and reinstalled flash from lighthouse update. Still crashing in Firefox.
Downloaded and installed Google chrome 21 and tried to watch amazon movie on that.
No error message but the movie just does not run. Files work fine at youtube.

Not sure what the problem really is. Hoping you folks can offer some suggestions.

Pete

P.S. Have been running amazon movies fine on firefox 15 with my x32 bit machine.
They worked last week.

Just checked. But not today. So I don't know what is wrong. Maybe its amazon.

hey Pete

Ive been working this issue on and off. Sorry But LHPUP Record has been eating my time between class.

here is where I stand so other can search in the right area

First I thought it was browser related. (not true)

Then I thought it was because Hal was not started (not true)

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/rc.hald start
Starting HAL daemon: /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes
If I first run rc.hald restart then google chrome sfs I can get it to load a video but the video screen is black with no sound.

Over thanksgiving break im going to tackle the issue.

Amazon movies

#193 Post by tazoc »

Hi Pete22 and meeki,

I don't have an Amazon Prime subscription, however I found this page with system requirements:

Watching Amazon Instant Video - Watch Now on a Mac or PC

It also states "Note: At this time, HD movies can't be streamed from a computer."

Of course that page might be outdated or incomplete and I didn't see anything about Linux there. However I often watch streaming video at espn3.com and sometimes the free games at MLB.TV, for what it's worth... So unless a flash plugin update would be related, I don't know what might help.

Sounds good Taz!
I did try both .pet and .sfs for chrome browser but I could get neither to work on my older sempron-based 64 bit system, but the .pet did work on my aspire laptop so I've replaced Chromium ver 13 with Chrome ver 21. I'm still interested in LHP 514 and it's one of the few pups that is relatively easy to run Compiz on. Some of the animation effects like Zoom and Magic Lamp seem to think my task bar is on the right of the screen, so the "Zoom to taskbar on minimize" option goes there and not to the top where I usually position it. But all the rest of the Compiz effects - wobbly windows, the 3d cube etc. all work well.

One thing I notice for LHP 514 versus some other pups and distros is the speed with which they boot up. After the "loading X" sys-message my LHP 514 takes quite a long time before a screen appears. I was surprised at how quickly Macpup529 gets the desktop up and running (although its not a 64 bit distro) and also how good it has been at getting the correct parameters for the screen on first boot.

Great to see you back in the saddle.

A few additions to the release notes preview previously posted here:

Wine-1.5.14-i486, Samba-4.6.5, Skype-4.0.0.7 (thanks to meeki) and some of the latest PupMates from radky via the Update repo.

Hi Barburo,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm seeing the same behavior with Compiz effects here. I thought it was because I have two monitors connected. Compiz (and, in KDE4 if Desktop Effects are enabled) has some overhead and slows X start up and running. I noticed that when I installed ATI Catalyst driver, X takes a few seconds longer to start up. Lighthouse has some startup scripts that do housekeeping, background management, drive icon label refresh and WM adjustments, no doubt slow things down a bit also.

Of course you can experiment with disabling some of the optional items in the Startup / Autostart folders by moving them to DisabledItems, e.g., xscreensaver-daemon-LHP. Before doing so, restart X and open /var/log/Xtime.log to see how long X took to start up. I noticed that it is faster on a successive X restart than on first start from boot up. Xtime.log should indicate start times for each X startup and WM used since the last reboot.

Lighthouse has some bells and whistles that most other Pups leave out, like show/hide desktop icons, more choice of WM, etc., so it will never be as snappy as Fatdog64. But I try not to add anything unless it serves a purpose, and still think it is much more agile, secure and open to customizing than Windows. I've found that uninstalling Pets can be problematic due to whiteouts left by the layered file system, and personally use SFS whenever possible. Chrome is rather complex as well. Even has its own Flash player, called Pepper.

It would great if MacPup offered a 64-bit version, or if Woof could build x86_64, then it would make incorporating Woof updates more straightforward.

Can this be changed?
Yes, Radky noted a similar bug earlier and I'm working on both.

For now, try

Code: Select all

pmount-puppy
in a terminal. If that is satisfactory, you can revert Drives Manager back to pmount-puppy with this:

Code: Select all

cp -f /usr/sbin/pmount-puppy /usr/sbin/pmount

Thanks for the update. Sorry about the difficulties. Try snap2 snapshot backup in the Utilities Menu. More info at http://standish.home3.org/snap2

Q5sys,
Over the summer, L64_Update-514u2.pet via the Update icon on the desktop:
Updated DrivesManager 1.5, (thanks to Radky) and Pmount. Either can be launched from the Filesystem Menu, after the package manager has finished.
The update to 1.5 put the drives in a scroll box, so should be able to manage all of them.

In LH64 5.15 DrivesManager 1.7 adds a small info button next to each drive, which can display device properties of the drive or optical disc, (using disktype) without mounting it.

Awesome thanks.
I tried building the latest XFCE package... I built it fine... but it wont load. Just attempts to load and then jumps out to prompt again.
Not sure the issue.

I'll turn my attention to trying to get my LXDE sfs to work sometime this coming week.

More info on Amazon movies

#200 Post by Pete22 »

Meeki and Tozac:

I got Amazon movies to work on my x32 machine again.
Ideas that might make it work in Lhp.
I'm not good with installing files that are not sfs or pets. Or I would try it myself
but I can't find the latest flash x64 as a sfs or pet.

Install firefox 14. DONT let it update, yet. Now install flash version 11.2.202.243.

Once Flash is installed and working in Firefox, let firefox update to the current version.

Reboot the computer.

Now try amazon movies.

If this still does not work, check to be sure Firefox is using the latest version of flash.
That was the the last problem I had to fix to get amazon movies working on
my x32 machine. Even though installed, Firefox was not using latest flash version.
I hope you avoid this by installing flash in Firefox 14.

Hope this helps.

Pete
