While nice, all of these courses give you theoretical knowledge without much if any real world application. I wonder how many people would be interested in learning by solving real world problems like fixing bugs, porting their favorite software to their favorite toolkit, writing GUI frontends, or just scratching an itch.

My impression was just the opposite..they seem completely grounded in real world application. What an amazing opportunity...and free.

I am currently learning Python for work. It's been years since I actually wrote code
Here's another: http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ This is an excellent course, but can be a bit annoying because he doesn't explain much about some of the functionality he is introducing. The goal seems to be just do it and the knowledge will come. I would suggest taking two online courses at the same time.

They've added a course on Artificial Intelligence and another on 3D design
I wish I had the knowledge required to take those courses
