i tried the windows version via wine but it fails at downloading from the radio.
the lucid .deb installed and even had a menu entry, but wil not run. i guess a lot of missing libs.

i got this in terminal:
Code:
sh-4.1# chirpw
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/chirpw", line 19, in <module>
    from chirp import platform, CHIRP_VERSION
ImportError: No module named chirp
sh-4.1#

I have need of the CHIRP app for an emergency communications practice drill today. (I was only just now informed of the need.)

There is a discussion of Linux use here:
<http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux>

So far versions have been compiled for Fedora and Ubuntu.

Quote:
Linux
Most modern distributions should have almost everything required to run chirp. Make sure you have python-serial and python-libxml2 packages installed.
Source tarball: chirp-0.2.3.tar.gz
Fedora users: d-rats-repo.rpm
Ubuntu users: ppa:ubuntu-hams-updates/ppa

http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download

Has anyone compiled the most-current version of this for Puppy (preferably Exprimo-friendly), please?

I did see this more-recent request but there was no public response:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=640795

Sure hate to have to boot a rare-use MS version of windows to do this ...

I just tried downloading chirp-0.1.12.tar.gz then extracted and opened a terminal in that folder.

When I executed
Code:
./chirpw
I got this error:
Quote:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "./chirpw", line 25, in <module>
import gtk
ImportError: No module named gtk

I have devx and qt sfs's loaded.

What am I missing, please?

Sorry to be so late...
You'll need some form of Python with the gtk modules installed.
I don't know where to point you off the top of my head, though. Sad

Not being a radio person I have no idea if this is working properly, but if anyone wants to try the attached .pets....it starts up at least, on lupu, using Technosauruse's Python+-2.6.4-i486.pet.

I've uploaded v0.3.0 here:

http://205.196.123.165/feywizq6cqkg/oo1tbnrsgfgdk63/chirp-0.3.0.pet

Also requires pyserial-2.6.pet

Run via Menu>Network>CHIRP

It works with Exprimo on an old Panasonic Toughbook CF-29.

I did need your two PET's plus Technosauruse's Python+-2.6.4-i486.pet

The startup item was placed in Network.

I could not get it to run from Console.

After Christ-mas morning I will be able to test it with a Baofeng UV-5R.

Thanks!

Hey edoc,
I just got the UV5-RA with firmware BB293 for Christmas and from my reading it looks like I need one of the newer nightly builds of chirp not an old stable build. Have you gotten your new radio to work with this pet and what firmware is your radio at?

I received the Serial Data cable but they sent the UV-3R interconnect cable (1/8" - 1/8") with it rather than the 1/8" to dual 1/8" & mini connector the UV-5R requires (same as a Kenwood or Wouxon).

I am going to try to build a patch cable while I wait for a just-ordered one to arrive in the mail.

Roberto,

I booted p528, then installed above packages, but couldn't get it to work...even from console. I was getting an error "ImportError: No module named libxml2."

Then lightbulb moment...I sfs_loaded lupu_devx_528-4.sfs...& it works, both from console, & menu.

Where & what the extra bits are, from the devx, I haven't a clue as i find python a very slippery beast to deal with!

I last tried to install Chirp in Exprimo 5x15 and it took the three files described previously, including the Chirp PET, to get it done.

I have now learned that the Baofeng radios respond best to the latest version of Chirp as found at:
http://trac.chirrp.danplanet.com/chircp_daily/LATEST/

I wonder if it is possible to create a PetGet that grabs the latest chirp-daily-xxxxxxxx.tar.gz and then overwrites the older installed version?

Probably best to google usage/examples of setserial.

http://setserial.sourceforge.net/setserial-man.html

Have uploaded v0.3.0...see above for links.

N.B. I have no radio, nor serial ports to test anything related to this post, and i hate python...caveat emptor.
