How to check version of and update Lucid?

#1 Post by lumi »

ive read a couple of posts on checking version

but id like to know how i know if im on lucid 528 004 or 528 005

i was on 528 004, now am i right in saying with a frugal install i can just extract from the 528 005 iso the files needed and replace them , if so is it all 3 apart from the save file. ie initrd.gz lupu_528.sfs and vmlinuz?

click on hard drive icon eg sda2 im my case, open the puppy folder i made and replace?

then if i do that how can i tell im on 005?

i tried this and the cat /etc/puppyversion is the same

am i missing something?

thanks

On my hard drive I have multiple directories/folders that are named after different puppy iso files.

In one directory I have these files:
initrd.gz | lupu_528.sfs | vmlinuz | and the pupsave file

menu -> System -> System Status and Config -> Pup-SysInfo system information
then...
System Files -> PupSaves

or look in...
/initrd/tmp/PUPSAVES-complete

You will notice the directory that the pupsave file is in.

It is helpful for me if that directory is named after the iso, or is identifiable in some way so that I know which iso those files came from.

It is my understanding that replacing those first three files I mentioned with the new files from the new iso will update it.

Ways to install Puppy and how to upgrade information is given here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60302

Basically for frugal installs the Lupu528.004 sfs file needs to be replaced by the Lupu528.005 sfs file and the old save file used.
initrd.gz and vmlinuz files should also be replaced with the ones that come with the newer Lucid 528.005 iso just to make sure you are using the latest ones.
I do not think you will find anything that identifies between Lucid528.004 or .005 with the lupu_528.sfs file in system info.
The two-digit numeric value, minor-version number of this distribution:
DISTRO_MINOR_VERSION=00
Seems the minor version number was never used.

You can look at the properties of the lupu_528.sfs file and the 005 version is 129MB in size compared to 004 version of 127MB.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected :shock:
