Thanks, technosaurus.
I am not in Akita at the moment, but menus, containing only a few items have their own submenu for example (if memory serves me correctly the section that contains the calculators doesn't really need a sub-menu for those items ... I am not sure if this is a bug, or if it was set that way in /etc/xdg/menus. There was a bug like this in older versions of lucid, and a solution for it as well... but it will take me some time to dig up that thread. I will analyze Akita some more when I have more time.

Tman, I tried running the Multiple Soundcard Wizard a couple times. It's in Akita. It doesn't find anything at all.
ALSAwizard freezes partway through, while trying to initialize the driver -- even on a new install!
ALSAmixer works as described. It needs to be pointed in the right direction to find anything, which is why I was thinking an alias was in order.

Downgraded to Flash 10 and everything in FF13 is now working fine! Even Facebook Chat is working. FF13 still takes longer to load than Chrome 7 but at least I can go to my Yahoo Mail account. Chrome 7 seems to run YouTube better but that's to be expected. I'm quite impressed by the old P3S Tualatin performance so far. Not much slower than my P4/478 w4gb ram for web browsing and according the the Watt meter it's drawing about 20 watts at idle and 50 when streaming audio and web surfing. My old Gateway P4 single core CPU never run XP anywhere near as fast as this machine is running Akita.

Sorry, I have a bad habit of skimming through thread entries, and responding before properly digesting all of the information.
I don't think you need an alias. If the soundcard works for you with those alsamixer settings, then:
just edit alsamixer.desktop and change the exec option to rxvt -e alsamixer -c 0
You will also need to refresh the JWM menus for the settings to take effect.

A notable side effect of not having the alias is that Pmusic won't play anything other than a little message in the status bar that says "source not found"

I think I need to create an alias somewhere, but I don't know how or what If someone can tell me how to make it known to the filesystem that there's a soundcard there, that would be nice.
|
An answer to this would be extraordinarily helpful |
Hard to know, as I don't have the hardware to test, but if I were you I'd play around and put something like this into /etc/modprobe.conf:
| Code: | alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236
options snd-cs4236 index=0 id=CARD_0 port=0x530 cport=0x210 \
irq=5 dma1=0 dma2=1 mpu_port=0x330 isapnp=0 fm_port=0x388 mpu_irq=9 | or | Code: | alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs4236
options snd-cs4236 index=0 port=0x530 cport=0x538 isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5 | ... also trying cs4232 instead of cs4236 ...
And play with the puppy boot options, to disable PnP OS: pci=biosirq
But I am basically guessing, as I did with Keefs audio problems!
| Tman wrote: | | I stumbled across Pupizzard package builder. Was this Iguleder's program, or did you modify it? |
It's Iguleders, I know next to nothing about compiling..
| Tman wrote: | I have modified one of Iguleder's builder package, which I got from Pemasu's Exprimo thread,
and it works great from the terminal ... I just have to do a few more tweaks to it, and then I want to make a font-end gui for it. I was wondering if you are interested in testing it, and maybe helping me with the gui? |
I think a good, big repo of build scripts would be great, to make compiling a little easier for users.. I still plan to create some build scripts of my own for Puppizard... I'd be happy to test your script - the best thing to do is post it as a pet so most users can easily test it, to get the most feedback...

Think I figured out part of the problem. This CPi doesn't have an option in BIOS to turn on/off the PnP OS feature. It's stuck in the "on" mode!
...the entry in menu.lst doesn't seem to do much, either. I may have to downgrade the BIOS to achieve this...

After making the upgrade to Beta 12, I found my Dell Optiplex Gx1 died. I managed to salvage most parts, but not the motherboard. I will be building a new PC anyways.

Well it didn't die from Akita, it died of age. I get to use this one guy's PC for now, but he won't let me even run puppy of a USB stick. I can make no modifications to it.
But I am building a new PC from scratch anyways, but I would have to run Akita in a virtual machine, or replace the kernel with a new one.

I hate when people can't understand a live CD/USB won't hurt their PC (except kill it ).

If I were you, I wouldn't bother with Akita if I had something powerful enough to run something better! I really should test out Slacko or latest Wary one day, see what I am missing..
I always like to try and find out what the support for Linux is like before buying any hardware.. not that I buy much... When my current PC dies, I'll probably cobble together a frankenstein PC with bits I got lying around...

Put the gfxfile ('message file') from the Akita ISO in /root/Desktop/
It must be the only file in the directory!
Open a terminal, run the following to unpack the file: | Code: | cd /root/Desktop
cpio -iv < gfxfile |
Then edit the files in /root/Desktop/ as needed.
In the same terminal: create the new gfxfile in /root/: | Code: | mv -v gfxfile ../gfxfile_old
ls | cpio -ov > ../gfxfile |
More info here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=372167#372167
Here are more 'message files', rename them as "gfxfile" and replace the original: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=50108
But I recommend using my gfxfile as a template to unpack, because I added more info to the help screen and fixed some other things.
