Hauppauge USB DVB-T TV for Puppy Linux 528.005

#1 Post by Ides »

Without practical knowledge of Linux I am bouncing between brick walls trying to make my Hauppauge Nova T DVB-T USB Stick work with Puppy Linux 528.005 installed on a 2GB flash drive.

Following such advice as I can find, I can confirm with DMESG that the driver is successfully loaded, have applied the linuxtv-DVB-apps-1.1.1.pet but running MAKEDEV-DVB.sh causes "chown: invalid user root.video" and if I try the Scan command in Console with any file in the \DVB-T directory I get a file not found error. If I try to see what Xine might do with any of the provided channels.conf files it reports "no input device found".
Repeated attempts with fresh Flash drive installs have failed in various ways.
It appears that the device loads but nothing binds to it.

I've tried per http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29513 and 36672 among several solutions posted in this and other sites including linuxtv.org but none are recent and none have worked. Attempts have similarly failed with a Freecom DVB-T USB stick art.no.25452.

There's such obvious benefit in being able to watch Freeview TV with Linux that I'm surprised that it's not an easy option .pet.

I'd really appreciate simply understandable current advice to resolve this difficulty.
Please?

Hauppauge USB DVB-T TV - Puppy Linux 528.005

#2 Post by Ides »

I'm still trying......

Installed Puppy Linux 528 to another flash drive
Plugged in the Hauppauge Nova T DVB-T USB
Installed linuxtv-DVB-apps-1.1.1.pet
Ran /usr/local/bin/MAKEDEV-DVB.SH with Console
"Creating DVB devices in /dev/dvb/adapter0
Creating DVB devices in /dev/dvb/adapter1
Creating DVB devices in /dev/dvb/adapter2
Creating DVB devices in /dev/dvb/adapter3
Script completed hit RETURN to close window."

Confirmed with DMESG that the DVB-T USB stick was recognised and successfully installed

Then I compiled a "UK-Local" file with correct data found online and in Console, ran....
"scan /root/my-applications/dvb-t/uk-Local > /tmp/channels.conf"
This resulted in lines of failure like......

>>> tune to: 658000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_3_4:FEC_AUTO:QAM_16:TRANSMISSION_MODE_2K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_32:HIERARCHY_NONE (tuning failed)
WARNING: >>> tuning failed!!!
ERROR: initial tuning failed
dumping lists (0 services)
Done.
sh-4.1#

If I follow the same procedure with my Freecom DVB-T sticks (both 25452 February 2006) the very same thing happens. Also noticed there appears to be little or no content within the /dev/dvb/adapter directories.

It seems to me that some vital stage has been missed or the drivers that are reported correct are actually not. (These DVB-T sticks work perfectly in Windows XP).

Can anyone please suggest what else I may try?

I wish I could help. I am not even on your level.
I have a Hauppauge too but an older? TVR 900
or similar name. Uses USB a kind of "dongle"?

I am not sure but I think that I have asked too
and not getting help and read here. You are not alone!

Puppy Support Issues
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=80907

I want you to get help but I know too little and I fail to get my Haupepauge going too?

So I do want this to get solved, did you notice that if one ask in "Beginners" then more often one do get help but it fails at times there too.

So it is a problem that needs to be addressed.

But we need to find somebody that cares about it and have the others ears.

I will try to find somebody that can take this up in a constructive way.
But it needs to be someone that are good at being diplomatic and charismatic or else everybody feel accused to not care.

such feelings can backfire.

@Ides

I'm having exactly the same problem using an asus u3000

it seems 'tuning failed' is a problem with low signal strength

I also tried w_scan (google search for the pet - can't remember where I found it)

this tool gives a little more info, it 'sees' the signal ie it reports at certain frequencies and will give 'signal ok' but does not find channel info at that frequency, much google hopping says that the signal strength is too low

multiple channels are multiplexed at certain frequencies and although it sees the signal it cannot 'lock' enough to get the channel info

I am using slacko so not sure if this vlc will work for you but in vlc-1.0.0-rc4-i686.pet the dvb-tv works where as the newer version did not - control-c for capture device press play and it will scan for you - no need for command line stuff

if you can't find w_scan pm and I'll email it

good luck!!

ally :)

The above frequencies and parameters relate to analogue rather than digital and unless your local transmitter has not yet switched the data you found on-line was out of date.

Please state your area & the name of your local transmitter. I will then provide a current digital mux
file which you can scan to produce a valid channels.conf

I bought recently dvb-c tuner stick. Or in fact it is dual dvb-t/c stick.

I had to use newer w_scan to get it produce working file for vlc.

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/ma ... 1_i386.deb

Code: Select all

w_scan -f c -c FI -L > vlc.xspf
-f c means dvb-c, dvb-t should be default

-c FI chooses your country. Use your country locale.

-L creates vlc understanding xml file, which you can open in VLC > open file.

w_scan --help gives you the accepted parameter listing.

Thats it.

Happy tuning.

Very good if it helps the OP Ides
but what about us that even fail to grasp
what the explanation amounted to.

How does one do what was suggested there?
Did I link to the right file? and does it work n Lupu?

ally,

For reference the data for all UK digital channels can be found here:

http://www.ukfree.tv/shutdowndetail.php?tx=TF218836

You need to generate the channels.conf using the file attached with the command:

scan /root/my-applications/dvb-t/uk-Belmont > /tmp/channels.conf

Before shutting down or rebooting copy channels.conf to any hidden directories such as
.mplayer
.xine

VLC will open a channels.conf directly.

Code: Select all

# Belmont England
# T freq bw fec_hi fec_lo mod transmission-mode guard-interval hierarchy
T 482000000 8MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/32 NONE

Hauppauge USB DVB-T TV for Puppy Linux 528.005

#13 Post by Ides »

Well....it appears that my exasperated comment has paid dividends and many thanks to all who replied :-)
Particularly ETP for pointing out that the frequencies and parameters I had obtained related to analogue not Digital and for directing me to http://www.ukfree.tv/shutdowndetail.php?tx=TF218836.
With the amended detail the scan command resulted in a .conf file with 114 TV/radio/etc channels.

I can blush at how problems that seem complex can be so simply solved by fixing an oversight. There again, with UNIX and Linux one can't avoid believing that any problem - must - be complex!

Oddly enough it was not Xine but a little downloaded prog called XAWTV that worked (albeit awkwardly) and with the 70001 and 70009 versions of the Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T USB sticks.
Xine as included in the distro keeps reporting "Sorry, no DVB input device found" - I shall persevere to find cause :-)

S0 - What seems to have worked is as follows....
Installed linuxtv-DVB-apps-1.1.1.pet
Ran /usr/local/bin/MAKEDEV-DVB.SH with Console
Made a Channels file with frequencies & etc from http://www.ukfree.tv/transmitters.php
Confirmed with DMESG that the DVB-T USB stick was recognised and successfully installed
In Console ran.....
scan /root/my-applications/dvb-t/uk-local > /tmp/channels.conf
Placed the resulting channels.conf file in the Xine and XAWTV directories (found using Pfind)
Right clicked in XAWTV to bring up its Control Window then clicked on Edit then Scan DVB, entering the lowest local frequency for it to scan the band and build a channel list. Then piffled around and enjoyed the result :-)

I'm again impressed by what Puppy can do but how useful it would be if TV capability and setting up could be simplified with a practical .pet in the distro!

Thanks for that detailed description on how you got it going.
Much appreciated. I wish I understood what it means practically
but I have to find somebody locally to sit with to help me go through
all the steps and find the Swedish frequences then ours differe from UK
so that needs to take care of too. Thanks to everybody helping out.

So now you can do this :)

Hi nooby et al,

Below is a link to pupRadio (which includes pupTelly), 01micko says it's just a bookmarking tool, but I don't recall any technical difficulties when I first tried it and it's still working. So?

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=50016

My regards

PS Some readers, particularly if using Slacko, may find pupRadio pre-installed.

Thanks
I should give it a test then.

Does one activate the dongle first so it has power and
then start pupradio and it finds the dongle?

Or should start the pupradio first and then the dongle
and that kind of activate what is needed?

I feel so dense how these things works.
I got it going in Ms Win but I hate their policies and ways
so would be good to be able to use Puppy Linux.

@nooby

after a little digging I managed to find the transmitter info in puppy already and matched the info previously supplied (thankyou!)

I'm running slacko but would assume it's the same in other flavours

look in: /usr/share/dvb/dvb-t - there is a huge list of transmitters and the respective data

good luck

Hauppauge USB DVB-T TV for Puppy Linux 528.005

#19 Post by Ides »

I have a flash drive with the first release of Puppy Linux 528 and got Wine and some useful progs working. Removed the silly pup logo and unwanted wallpapers, Dillo, games and some programs, added Opera, Firefox, Flash player (etc) and was generally pleased with the result.

BUT
Then I tried repeating the DVB-T setup.
Installed linuxtv-DVB-apps-1.1.1.pet but when I ran /usr/local/bin/MAKEDEV-DVB.SH with Console - back came the problem "chown: invalid user root.video".
Therefore I need to learn what that means, how to correct it and how do I directly run .SH files if not opening with Console?

Even though MAKEDEV-DVB.SH hadn't worked, DMESG confirmed as before, the scan command worked and I transferred the resulting .conf files to wherever seemed right in the Xine/Gnome mplayer/XAWTV directories. Xine said "Sorry, no DVB input device found", mplayer wouldn't and XAWTV hiccoughed and exited. I then tried installing VLC and found no way to activate DVB function.

I bet I'm staggering down a well trodden path and among the 392 viewers of this thread (so far), someone surely knows ways to ease this journey to a simple need? (It has to be TV on a flash drive).

Also, beyond fixing the abovementioned FUBARS I'd like to find some program that will clear accumulated CRUD in a similar way as CCleaner does in Windows. Is Bleachbit viable?

Hi Ides,

In case it may be of interest, CCleaner works well in Wine.

My regards
